Owner description: Bill Speidel's Underground Tour is a leisurely, guided walking tour beneath Seattle’s sidewalks and streets. As you roam the subterranean passages that once were the main roadways and first-floor storefronts of old downtown Seattle, our guides regale you with the stories our pioneers didn’t want you to hear. It’s history with a twist! The tour begins inside Doc Maynard’s Public House, a restored 1890s saloon. Following a short intro, we’ll walk through historic Pioneer Square to three different sections of Underground—about three blocks in all...

“Seattle Underground”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2010

Fabulous tour, fun guides, interesting stories. Not for the moderate to highly claustrophobic. Inexpensive 90 minutes you will be glad you tried. Also, the cafe in the lobby of the attraction serves a mean bloody mary and delicious food. I would make the cafe itself a lunch destination spot if I am in Seattle again.

“Not worth the time and money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2010

Although we had a great guide, the toilet humor gets old after about five minutes and you still have 85 minutes to go! The "tour" amounts to going beneath two buildings in old Seattle and the talk basically explains what happened in the Pioneer Square area after the city burned down in late 1800's.

We had been on an underground tour in Pendleton, OR which we thoroughly enjoyed. This was a bust and is definitely not for kids.

We read about this attraction in one of the brochures and then our waitress recommended it from the Daily Grill at the Sheraton. We thought it would be very interesting and a lot of fun. We were wrong on both accounts and found it to be very expensive also, fifteen dollars apiece. There really is not anything to see. Spend your money on a good book about Seattle, I believe you will get a lot more for your money.

“A fun way to spend some time in Seattle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2010

We really enjoyed this tour. We took our 11 & 13 year old on this and the 4 of us agreed that it was very well done. We spent just under $60 for all us and felt this was fair. As has been said in other reviews, the tour starts in a bar with a very good overview of the history of Seattle and the "interesting" start to the tour. The 13 year old boy in particular enjoyed the bathroom humour of this part. The information was presented in such a way that we were all very curious to see how this city was built.

Our guide was outstanding and truly enjoyed her job and the history. Pre-teens and teens are more than able to enjoy the tour and not disrupt it. In fact, it was some the adults that had to be reminded to stay with the group and pay attention! We felt that we saw everything there was to offer, however, we would of liked a bit more time to get photos - it did feel a bit rushed.

I do agree that the groups was a bit too big. A few less would probably have allowed for a bit more time in each of the underground areas and less time waiting for everyone to get from one area to the other.

I truly enjoyed the tour and do recommend it for someone looking for a more unique view of Seattle.

“Not the best way to spend time in Seattle”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2010

We took this tour on March 19th 2010. I would say this is a 2.5 on the 5 point scale. My housemate and I spent almost a week in Seattle seeing the sights and this was the low point for both of us. The history of the Pioneer neighborhood is rather interesting, but perhaps there is a more cost effective way to learn it.

As some of the other people say in the reviews, the history was the only interesting part of this tour. That is very true. The tour guide did a very good job painting the picture of Seattle past. And I did learn some interesting bits ( ie Seattle was named after Chief Seattle). The pictures were a helpful, however you had to stand pretty darn close because the lighting was horrible and the guide had a solo flashlight. The actual sights were not very impressive. The only interesting part were the underground windows and doorways, but that is about it.

Other reviewers talked about big groups, we took the 5pm tour and didnt have that many people in it. It was suppose to be an hour an 20 min. However, we were done and in the gift shop in an hour. Overall, if we had the choice to do it again we would have skipped it. Seattle has so many wonderful sites. This was not one of them.
