“Great hotel experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

Just came back from Seattle. I picked this hotel based on other TripAdvisor reviews. I was solo and had a queen room. Others might think it was small, but I found it to be perfect. The staff was wonderful. I prefer to find smaller boutique hotels rather than large chains for a more unique experience, and this was certainly was unique. The decor was very edgy and modern, which was refreshing. I highly recommend.

Room Tip: I faced the street which was exactly perfect.

Exceptional service, very clean, great location central to everything, superb customer service, awesome free beer hour. I would most certainly stay again. Restrooms are small but functional. We were accommodated immediately upon arrival and greeted each and every time we arrived/left. Hotel staff were friendly and curteous.

We stayed at the Hotel Max for three nights during our visit to Seattle. This hotel has a very trendy, European feel and the hallways, doors, and rooms are nicely decorated. The front desk staff was very helpful with questions, providing us with extra pillows, etc. The location of the hotel is excellent, only a few blocks away from Westlake Center Station (monorail, bus, light rail), Westlake Center (mall with many shopping and dining options), the Emerald City Trolley stop, and many other restaurants. There is also a restaurant attached to the hotel (although we didn’t eat there).

Hello there SusanMikeTampa!
Thank you both for staying with us at the Max on your recent trip to Seattle. Furthermore, thank you for sharing your glowing review with TripAdvisor. We are stoked to hear that you enjoyed your experience and found our team, design and location to be to your liking. I must admit we are very fortunate given our location and have worked hard to develop the team and design of the hotel.
Again, thank you for staying with us and we cannot wait to welcome you back to the Max on your next visit to Seattle.
Cheers,

Only one word to describe Hotel Max – quirky. We stayed only for one night and didn’t try the restaurant or have breakfast at the hotel so this review is limited to the check-in and check-out experience together with a description of the room and general ambience of the facility.
Check-in was delayed by two hours which was an irritant rather than a cataclysmic event, but as the old adage goes ‘first impressions are lasting impressions’. It made no difference to us, even following a 6-hour journey, but when the check-in clerk looks at the desk monitor, grimaces and then adopts a pose reminiscent of Rodin’s ‘The Thinker’, he signalled clearly enough that there was a problem. We returned at the re-scheduled time and made our way to our room along a room corridor adorned with blown-up photographs of various musicians from earlier years, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie and the like.
Our room had all the prerequisites that one expected from a A$ 191 per night accommodation but it was as if the room had been designed by a Japanese bonsai master, everything was crammed into a space that would have made a shoe box seem commodious. The double bed had but one point of access which required formal negotiation with the incumbent that had first dibs at sleeping on the side with the bedside table. The lavatory was recessed into a closet that had room for a toilet bowl and a corner mounted hand basin. A second closet contained a shower that had a curtain protecting the door from splash-back and both closets would have induced panic in a claustrophobe.
With a suitcase each plus two backpacks the room upon the unpacking for a single night’s stay resembled the aftermath of a particularly frenetic striptease-show – I am certain that an item of clothing was found hanging from a light fixture. It was small. Very small.
The airconditioning consisted of a wall mounted reverse cycle unit that certainly had ample ability to either warm or cool the room, probably 4 or 5 rooms come to that and because of the size of the room and the power of the unit we were constrained to turn it off in order to hear one another above the roar of the compressor and to stop being blown against the opposite wall. Thankfully, Seattle in June did not require the room to be heated or cooled and the ambient temperature in the room was perfectly benign during our stay.
What is irksome in this day and age is the provision by this hotel, indeed any hotel, of wi-fi access to the internet at rapacious rates of US$ 9.95 per 24 hours. Access to the internet should by rights be gratis, but it gives the marketing boffins the ability to have the check-out clerks offer to delete the charge in return for your e-mail address so that yet more spam arrives in your in-box until the ‘unsubscribe’ tag is applied. It is a particularly unsophisticated marketing ploy and causes exquisite irritation to guests and I am, quite frankly, amazed that hotel management allows it to continue, but I suppose all of us, in whatever walk of life, are in the maw of the backroom marketing boys.
There was a buzz about the hotel and we particularly enjoyed the early evening ‘Happy Hour’ when guests mingled in the lobby area, were provided with a local craft beer and staff made introductions between guests, it was a nice gesture, it certainly impressed us and was a good start to our evening. The staff were attentive, young, pleasant and polite which shouldn’t really require comment. The location of Hotel Max is central and close to transport and the downtown sights such as Pike Place Market. Our stay was perfectly pleasant but upon asking Madam whether she would stay at Hotel Max again she responded that she found the colour scheme, which relied heavily on a murderous crimson, over the top, but she concluded – “The room was far too small, I won’t be back” No doubt there are larger rooms at Hotel Max but we have not tried them.

Room Tip: Book a large room for your happiness.

Hello there 1344valenceville!
Thank you so much for staying with us and for taking the time to share your story with TripAdvisor. Additionally, I thank you for acknowledging the buzz around the hotel. That's what we want. We want the Max to be a place of excitement, where engaging with other guests is encouraged and a place to celebrate Seattle and all of the local vendors and people that make this city great. You are very much correct in that we do have larger rooms but please know that each of them are as nontraditional and quirky as the one you stayed in. It's one of things that makes us the Max and not a cookie cutter hotel. We know we aren't for everyone and are completely fine with that. Thanks for giving us a shot.
Regards,
Kevin Scott

We booked directly through the hotel (with a twitter discount) and requested a room on the Sub Pop floor, and Hotel Max delivered. We were welcomed into our room with a handwritten note, sunglasses, souvenir bottle opener, and free 45s (including Nirvana, much to our teen's delight). Rooms are tight, as in many cities, but clean, comfortable, and stylish. Happy hour craft beer in the lobby was a real treat, and throughout our stay service was impeccable.

Hotel Max has one of the best locations for Downtown Seattle. Two blocks from the Westlake bus/train station. 10 minute walk to Belltown/ Pike Place. 15 mins walk to the needle. Very friendly and courteous staff. Front Desk manager Melissa gave all good recommendations on the nightlife. Linz (pronounced Lance) , the concierge also gets high marks for his recommendations on nearby restaurants.
As for the hotel itself, the rooms are small, bathrooms are even smaller. Stayed there for business for two weeks, so I was hardly there, so not a huge issue for me. I love the artwork inside the rooms and on the room doors: very eclectic. Nights can be noisy from the street: garbage trucks come at 4am (they do provide ear plugs). They're in the process of upgrading all the windows, so that should solve that. Complimentary beer in the lobby from 5:30-6:30 is awesome. The gym is tiny: If the weather is nice, take a jog down to Olympic Park for better cardio.

Room Tip: If you want a bigger room/ bathroom and willing to give up the king for a queen, ask for the double...

We had a room with two beds on the corner of the 7th floor. Great views, cute room, nice sized bathroom. Nice staff. The others we went with got a room with 1 queen bed. The bathroom was very small. The elevators were small, as well. Overall, I really liked this place. Great location in walking distance to attractions and public transportation.
