“The place to stay when your companion is at Virginia Mason Hospital”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2014

There are two properties. The Baroness is an older hotel with an old fashioned elevator. There is no air conditioning. The interiors are old as well but clean and have refrigerators. The rooms at the Inn have been renovated but they tend to be smaller and without refrigerators. The Inn does not have air conditioning either.

Staff will do their best to get you the room you want. I have been to hotels that cost more where the staff is not nearly as accommodating.

Both hotels tend to be quiet. If you or your companion is at a hospital, you get reduced rates. The staff caters to such visitors, adjusting your stay if they can, to accommodate an extended or shortened stay due to medical reasons. If you have a procedure at Virginia Mason, the hospital will transport you by wheelchair to either hotel. One is next to the hospital; the other across the street.

The Inn has a lovely, quiet garden where you can relax and read. They will soon open their coffee shop in the lobby.

There is a business center in the lobby of the Baroness.

Swedish Hospital and Cabrini are a block or two away.

The Frye Art Museum, Capitol Hill District's Broadway are also nearby.

Room Tip: Get a high floor facing the street or you may hear garbage trucks in the alley during the wee hours.

I really enjoyed this hotel. The staff were friendly and the cafe attached was very good and affordable (best coffee I had since visiting the USA). I was also delighted to discover that you can do your own laundry for $1.25!

I chose the Mason for its price and its modest but seemingly appropriate rooms so I didn't expect a lot but I was let down on a couple of things:

For one, the beds were atrocious for a person with a bad back like my own. Usually I can manage an average bed for a few nights but I was in serious pain after just one night and I had 2 more to go. I even had two beds to choose from so I switched and suffered almost as badly on the other.

The other issue was that I was in one of the "09" numbered rooms (in this case 509) which apparently has well known issues with Internet connectivity. I made the mistake of only reading reviews and not telling the hotel I needed excellent connectivity so I was left without any stable Internet (literally I gave up using it). Since I was in Seattle for an Internet business-based conference it was a huge let-down. That said my colleague who was in another room had great Internet... such is my luck unfortunately.

As for the rest of the place... it was quite decent. Good service, clean rooms, HUGE bathrooms (converted hospital bathrooms) and moderate noise.

All-in-all, if I had a better quality bed and stable Internet I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Room Tip: DO NOT get a room with in the "09" portion of the building (e.g. 109,209,309, etc.). They...

Hi Traveler - Thank you for your review. We receive very bed complaints and I apologize you found both beds in your room unsuitable. This is also the first I've heard about the '09 internet issue. Our internet has been performing very well but I will check into this further! Yes, there are many fine hotel choices in Seattle. . .thank you for giving us a try and good luck on your next hotel experience.

While an older hotel, it has some charm to it. The rooms are large and comfortable. The beds give a good nights sleep. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The coffee shop is decently priced and has a nice outdoor patio. The negatives aren't too bad. One elevator, not a long wait. Could use a coat of paint and a little polish here and there. Maybe a little updating would help. On the brighter side, no pun intended, I always look for the brightness of the room and the available sockets to plug in our electronics. The rooms have more than adequate light and the lamps/light fixtures each have outlets for plugins. They are part of Virginia Mason hospital and Medical Center. This was very convenient for us and close to downtown. FREE WI-FI!

Room Tip: A corner room is larger and breezier.

Lovely Hotel, great breakfast/cafe in lobby, great location in city. Next to a Hospital but
no disturbance re noise etc The roof garden with seats etc was a treat.
The only improvement needed was the elevator- small and old. A delightful stay.

Room Tip: My room backed onto Hospital parking lot - quiet and no disturbance.

Was looking for a decent hotel in the downtown Seattle area while attending a technical conference. Colleague found this one surfing the net. Cost was $140/night; while expensive compared to other business hotels in area was 40% or greater savings. Does not have all of the amenities of bigger chains and business hotels but if you just need a clean room, bed and comfort, this property works. Did not have a rental car so parking was no issue (parking is at a premium in downtown Seattle and scarce). Was only 4 blocks from the Washington State Convention Center (our conference venue). Property is older as noted by external wiring conduit and switches. On the negative side it is a very steep uphill walk from downtown so if you cannot deal with an uphill hike go elsewhere, but was also good for burning off the calories after dinner. Great breakfast café less than a block from this property (Corner Café, on corner of Terry Avenue and Madison Street). Water pressure in shower was low, probably due to restriction device likely required by the local nature Nazis in charge of the local city regulations. Max bed size is queen size but the mattress was very comfortable. Elevator is slow and small.

Room Tip: If you have a car plan your parking with input from hotel staff before you arrive.

I only stayed one night here, but enjoyed my room, and the quiet atmosphere. The one elevator is a little small, but it never gave me problems. Location was great, it was a good starting spot for a Sunday morning walk around downtown. May have been a little overpriced for the condition it's in, but it was a Saturday night after all.
