5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2014

We felt a warm, friendly and professional accommodation at all levels of our all too brief stay. I highly recommend this hotel for both stranger to Seattle and those who want a local getaway vacation.

My sister and I shared a large twin room on level 4 looking south and east (over the sound and the market, with very bright red sign proclaiming itself). We arrived with an eight hour time difference (from London) and a need for sleep, but knowing that we would feel hungry at 4am, and this is a small hotel, without 24-hour room service. We asked where we could get a sandwich to lay in for a pre-breakfast snack, and were directed by receptionist to a smart-looking diner (Steelhead) directly across Pine St, but they only did elaborate hot sandwiches, and we thought one of those might be less nice after several hours of cooling. Trudged off into the dark and eventually found something to bring back for the morning. Fell into bed: the queen-size beds were incredibly comfortable, lovely linen and mattresses. I woke up very early, feeling hungry and in need of a bath (we couldn't be bothered the night before). Found that the bath plug didn't hold water, so used the upside down lid of the cotton wool container, worked a treat just as long as I remembered not to kick it. Ample hot water, lots of nice smellies, plenty of towels, we didn't need them all, but always nice to have available. Good robes. Coffee machine in the room provided good coffee, and at 6 we went out for breakfast (nearby Three Girls bakery opens earliest, and was a much more successful recommendation by receptionist). Returned to hotel, mentioned bath plug failure, and set off for the day's adventures. The plug was fixed by our return that night.

The climate control plant, in a big cupboard in the corner of the room, was quite noisy: it cut in and out suddenly, and often (too sensitive a setting?). Can be turned off, but I didn't want to get out of bed, and anyway that would mean no ventilation. We were so tired the first night we could have slept through anything, but for nights 2 and 3 it did disrupt the later part of the night's sleep, even though my sister had brought earplugs. Because we were still jet-lagged, it was hard to doze off again once awake in the early morning.

We had a good value three night package with tickets to the Art Museum, and including efficient valet parking. It was lovely to have the parking, bigger hotels in Seattle charge quite a lot, which seems churlish for overnighting guests, so well done Inn at the Market. Other nice touches were hot cider in the lobby (apple juice to Brits), very welcome in really quite cold weather, and a good variety of newspapers. We took a look at the roof terrace, probably better in summer, and noticed what I suppose is Beecher's Loft, a great option if you want to entertain your friends "at home" and money is no object.

We were able to put an excellent dinner at Marché Bistro (across the internal courtyard) on our hotel bill, but not breakfast at Bacco's cafe, despite being told by reception that it was where the hotel breakfasts were served. This was a bit annoying, as we might have decided to go elsewhere, if we were going to have to get the credit card out anyway. It would have been good to have known this in advance - what if we had not brought our wallets down from the room? Be warned: getting to Bacco involves going out of doors and up round the side of the hotel, even though it is in the same building. (If one has to get a coat out one might as well go a similar distance to the opposite corner of the block and have the superb croissants and even better coffee at bustling Panier.) The Bacco food and smoothies were tasty and quick, huge helpings, enough for two.

My quibbles above are very minor (apart from the noisy a/c) and the hotel is worth the five stars I have given overall. We were scarcely there during daylight, and missed the sunsets, for which our room was well-located. I don't think this would necessarily be the right hotel for young children, but all but the most surly teenagers would love its uncontrived but stylish décor, and the unbeatable location. I would certainly like to stay there again, particularly if a breakfast picnic basket were on offer for European arrivals to order for their room so than they can eat something energy-giving when they wake the next morning, more than just fruit. I would have paid good money for such a thing!

While spending too much time in hotels, there are times when a facility or staff stands out. The Inn at the Market stands out as a wonderful facility and it has a truly excellent staff. I have stayed many places in Seattle and enjoyed those stays, but the Inn at the Market has been the best. Wonderful views, delightful staff, upkeep is excellent as well.

Room Tip: Rooms on the water side offer excellent views.

This has become my home away from home while in Seattle on business. The location is centrally-located in the midst of Seattle near the market, great shops, great restaurants and the waterfront. The spacious rooms have amazing views and the housekeeping the best and most attentive to detail I've seen in years (and I have worked in the hotel industry for decades). The front desk greeted me graciously by name at all times and the valets were immensely helpful. Cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. The best choice in downtown Seattle by far. Puts the Joie de Vie and Kimpton properties in town to shame.

Quaint smaller boutique hotel with fantastic rooms and staff. The most comfortable hotel bed and bedding I have ever had. West facing rooms have an incredible view of the Sound and the Market. Breakfast at Bacco's is fantastic and under $20/person with the fresh juice bar. The room price is a little high (starting around $200 for a street view, goes up for water views) and Parking is pretty pricey (about $50 and not included in price) but the location and quality of rooms are worth splurging on for an average middle class person such as myself. If money is no object this place would be a bargain. I will gladly stay again for another special occasion. Staff was incredible and very helpful, even if you forgot items in your car. Lots to see and do nearby within walking distance as your right at the market.

We often visit Seattle and in the summer, this popular spot is hard to book. We were excited to get a water view suite on February 2-3. The room (702) was spacious, with a nice layout, good storage, and a fabulous view of the market, the ferries, the Ferris wheel and the sunset. We took dozens of pictures. The kitchen was a bonus. I wish I had taken pictures of the chairs sitting by the floor to ceiling windows on both levels. They were great examples of mid-century modern furniture and quite attractive. The bathroom was so lovely I took a picture of the shower curtains to show a designer friend. Excellent quality Gilchrist and Soames toiletries, too.

This was Super Bowl night, and a lot of things closed in mid-afternoon downtown. It was almost eerily quiet! The two large TVs made watching the game easy, and after the game, being in the middle of all the excitement, watching the parties at street level, was a really fun experience.

The windows in the suite had great soundproofing qualities. When we were ready for bed, the party was still going on in the street, but despite the shouting and car horns, we were able to sleep easily. Ditto for the morning unloading of trucks at the market.

We totally enjoyed our bright and cheery suite and the view. Our dinner in the Cafe Campagne was also a highlight of our trip.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and go for the view, especially in winter when sitting on the hotel deck isn't an...

Dear 12th Man Fan:
Thank you for selecting the Inn at The Market to watch the big game last weekend, I am pleased to read you had a nice visit here at the hotel. Hopefully the Seahawks make the big game again next year.

I was in Seattle for a conference in the central downtown area but chose Inn at the Market rather than the major hotel (part of a global chain) where the conference was held because of IATM's location so close to the harbour front and the Pike Street market area, yet within 15 minutes walking distance to my conference venue.
It was absolutely the right choice on every count: while freezing outside, entering the hotel lobby provided immediate relief, warmed by a roaring fire, comfy lounge chairs, even chocolate chip cookies; the desk staff were professional and exceptionally helpful; my room on the 4th floor was far beyond what I expected for the (very reasonable) tariff - it was spacious, spotlessly clean, had beautiful linen and fittings, a very comfortable bed, classy toiletries, free excellent w-ifi and a view over the sound to Bainbridge Island and the snow-covered Olympic mountains. When next in Seattle I will definitely be returning to this gem.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view towards the sound.
