Riding the City Tour Bus was lots of fun with our tour guide Elsie at the helm pointing out the landmarks along the way. It was a relatively short tour since this town is just so tiny running about 5 blocks wide and 20 deep with a population of around 900. We learned about the days of the Gold Rush and about "Soapy Smith," a slimy charlatan who earned his due when a local vigilante shot him dead. On Elsie's recommendation, after the tour, while walking around town browsing and buying souvenirs, we stopped in at the Skagway Brewing Company on 7th and Broadway and tried Spruce Tip Beer and absolutely loved it. Yes, you can walk the entire town on your own but you'll miss learning about the history of it if you don't take the tour. Lots of fun! Elsie, hope that Margarita Fund got you to your desired vacation destination, haha!!!
This tour was about 2 miles long as the little town of Skagway is, well, little. But the tales we heard from our guide/driver were great stories of the old wild northwest.
We booked the Skagway City tour through the Celebrity Cruise Lines booking system and we had a wonderful time. Our costumed tour guide was Ramie and she was very entertaining and enthusiastic. We learned a great deal about the city of Skagway, were taken to a beautiful overlook and learned all about Soapy Smith. We highly recommend this tour. A stop is made in downtown Skagway at the conclusion of the tour, for anyone wanting to shop before returning to the cruise ship. Its about a 1/2 mile walk from downtown Skagway to the docks. There is a small bus which will take you to the docks as well. I believe I saw the cost was $4.
Very good tour with 'fine actress' (Nicky) who reminded me of Ruby Wax. Not only did we learn about Soapy Smith the local historical villian but also how the people of modern Skagway live.
We had a marvelous driver/hostess for our tour. She was extremely enthusiastic and funny. Her history of Skagway was accurate and entertaining.
We recently visited Skagway on a cruise ship and took this tour. It was the best, most informative and feel good tour we have ever been on. The guides are fun and have a vast knowledge of the area. We highly recommend this tour for all ages.
