The White House is an older home, well maintained while keeping its character. It is a few blocks off the main street, which we felt was a plus, because the streets are clogged with people from the cruise ships during the day. Before 8:00 a.m. and after 6:30 p.m. it is easy to walk anywhere, although many of the stores are closed by then. There is a cold breakfast offered, that was more than adequate. In addition there is a muffin of the day, and fresh cookies everyday, which were all good.
The difficulty we had was getting from and back to the harbor. The innkeepers assured us that the local shuttle system would serve us well. That did not turn out to be the case, There was a shuttle sign at the harbor, and it said it ran until 9:00 pm, but they did not come, and we got an answering machine when we called the number. Luckily we had been chatting with a young woman who was returning for a home visit and she saw our plight. she and her Mom gave us a quick tour of the town and dropped us off at the B&B. The ferry dock is a good mile+ from the White House and dragging luggage back there was unappealing. We expressed our concern to our host. He told us the shuttle could not be reserved, but that they began running at 7:00 a.m so we should have no trouble getting to our 8:00 ferry. We called right at 7:00 a.m., and got the answering machine. We asked for assistance from the person on site, who called the shuttle again, and then called a local taxi, which we had been told by our hosts did not exist. Still only got a machine there too. At 7:30, neither of us felt comfortable waiting any longer, so we schlepped our luggage down the ferry dock. We made it, but were sweaty, tired and aggravated.
The shuttle worked for us for daytime travel, but did not work for transportation to and from the small boat dock. We were sorely disappointed in our hosts who did not step up and help us when we were leaving. This colored our view of our stay at the White House, and left us dissatisfied despite the actual accommodations being spacious, historic and well maintained.

Your are right. While we aren't licensed for it and our insurance doesn't cover it, if we had a vehicle available we should have offered to drive you to the harbor ourselves. I am very sorry. There is no taxi service in Skagway. The alternate number called was for one of the local tour operators. The SMART bus system works most of the time, but all it takes is for a cell phone to be left our of hearing range for it to all fall apart. Please accept our apologies and know that I have copied your post to the owner/operator of the SMART shuttle system to make them aware. We do our best to inform our visitors how and when the system is available, but sadly, with humans at the helm, it sometimes fails. Thank you for your kind comments about your stay At the White House and for bringing this to my attention. I hope your lasting memory of Skagway is of colorful gardens and dramatic backdrops of the train trip.
