We were in Skagway the first part of June, on a cruise. We booked our excursion directly through the railroad because it was a little bit cheaper. Those who booked through the cruise line could board the train right on the dock. We had to walk into town and get our tickets and board there, which was a 10-15 min walk. We are glad we did it this way anyway because the trains off the dock were packed and the train we were on hardly had anyone on it. During the ride we could go back and forth to each side of the train, because there were so few people.
The scenery was amazing, with lots of cliffs, waterfalls, and tunnels. We took our two boys, ages 14, and 9, and they loved it. We were worried that they would get bored, but they had a great time.
