Nice scenery; poor narration. Expensive.

I really enjoyed the scenery on this trip, but the narration is terrible. It's uninformative and more focused on selling DVDs than actually describing the place that you're visiting. They treated us like marks rather than people who had paid a lot for and expected to enjoy their tour.

This is a must do thing if you ever visit Skagway. I took the train to Fraser and then took a bus back to Skagway. It was May, so there was still lots of snow towards the summit and in Canada. Check out all my pics to see some of the beautiful scenery I saw.

We were in Skagway the first part of June, on a cruise. We booked our excursion directly through the railroad because it was a little bit cheaper. Those who booked through the cruise line could board the train right on the dock. We had to walk into town and get our tickets and board there, which was a 10-15 min walk. We are glad we did it this way anyway because the trains off the dock were packed and the train we were on hardly had anyone on it. During the ride we could go back and forth to each side of the train, because there were so few people.

The scenery was amazing, with lots of cliffs, waterfalls, and tunnels. We took our two boys, ages 14, and 9, and they loved it. We were worried that they would get bored, but they had a great time.

We boarded at Skagway -- though you should check the website's schedule for other locations and pricing -- and spent the next two hours winding up, up into the mountains, which were wrapped in clouds. We lost count of the number of waterfalls before we turned around at the summit, Fraser, British Columbia (population 7). On the way back down we saw a black bear next to the tracks and even more waterfalls.

Even more astonishing than the wildlife is the history of this railway -- and how the heck they built it up the side of the mountain back in 1898! It's been awarded the International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. But, you'll get all of this information during the talk as you ride the rails.

This was my second time to cruise Alaska and ride this train---it was a beautiful day (may22) and the ride to Frasier was just as fascinating the second time as was the first--There was an abundance of snow--in fact, the train stopped to pick up some snow boarders who were spending the day on the mountains. The young lady came through the train only to sell a DVD/video but didn't give much information but we heard the historic information over the sound system. We were so pleased with the entire trip and the scenery was spetacular---truly lots of Kodak moments ! When I return, I will do this again and enjoy it for a third time. This is worth every penny !!
