We signed up for the daylong excursion as part of our cruise. Our excursion started with a scenic bus tour up through the Yukon to Caribou Crossing and Carcross. The scenery was breathtaking and our driver stopped quite often for picture taking opportunities. She was also more than happy to play photographer so that we could have some great photos together. We ended up in Caribou Crossing at a 'musher' type camp where we were treated to a very good BBQ chicken lunch. They had a main building you could eat in but we decided to venture outside and dine in one of the rustic covered wagons they had setup with tables inside. The Iditarod summer sled dog training camp is located here and you could pay to go on a sled (with wheels) tour pulled by some of the Iditarod dogs. You can also go over and pet the dogs and for a donation, grab some treats to give them which they are all used to and almost expect. There was a young litter of husky pups snoozing near their mom which I was lucky enough to be allowed to pick one up...if only I could have brought the puppy home! THere is also a museum located here of stuffed/mounted wildlife which was amazing to see..very realistic.
After leaving Caribou Crossing, our bus driver stopped at Emerald Lake...stunning! We then went on to Carcross for a quick stop and had the chance to have our passports stamped. Our bus then journeyed back to the Canadian border where we then boarded our steam train for our trip back down the White Pass and the mountains to Skagway. The weather was chilly and a little overcast but the views were beyond spectacular. The train itself was clean, comfortable (not plush, but historically accurate), the conductor/tour guides were helpful and informative. The car we were in was not packed which afforded us room to move around and get great pictures. They also allow a few people to actually go out and ride on the platform areas between the cars. A little scary at times as this is a historic narrow gauge railroad and at times, there are huge drops as you hug the mountain passes. It's a lot of fun though and you get some amazing photos riding the platform. I also recommend getting in a car towards the back of the train if you are making the South bound trip down the White Pass. Being at the back will allow you some great photo ops of the front of the train as it wraps it's way ahead of you around the mountain. If you prefer to be seated inside one of the cars then sit on the right side of the train if you are heading Southbound. If you are taking the train North out of Skagway, then sit on the left side of the train as this will be the side with the spectacular views (the right will be against the mountain). If you are a fan or trains or not, this trip is a must do...the scenery is amazing. We also recommend the full day excursion as there is not much to do in Skagway...even doing the full day, we still had time to ramble around the town and visit a few saloons for beer and snacks before heading back to the ship. FInal tip: You can book this one independent of the cruise line and save a good bit of money! Just go to wpyr.com and you can book it with them.
