I have travelled all over Costa Rica and Coyote Mountain stands out as a truly exceptional experience. Although secluded and somewhat remote, we used it as a base for great day trips, including Arenal, a nearby cloud forest preserve, and Carara National Park. The staff is entirely local and extremely service oriented and friendly (don`t expect absolutely perfect English). The Inn itself is architecturally magnificent--with a feeling akin to an old Spanish monastery. The food superbly cooked by Rosalydia left us completely satisifed--she presents Costa Rican ingredients in a refreshing style. We had wanted to reserve the Observatory, which has to be one of the most unique rooms in the country, but instead got one of the rooms on the ground floor, which are extremely nice: high, beamed ceilings, gorgeous bathrooms, locally handmade furniture and colorful textile wall hangings. This place is a non-commercial respite from the rest of Costa Rica tourist spots, and give guests a true feeling of found the heart of Cost Rica.

When going, plan on renting a 4x4--the last little bit (about 2 km) is bumpy road.

Absolutely awful experience!!! They didn't respond to a single email prior to arriving, the signless entrance was locked when we arrived and we drove around for an extra two hours thinking we hadn't found the hotel yet. Upon arriving, the clerk disgustingly slapped the house dog when showing us our rooms (animal lovers beware). When we confronted the owners about our numerous problems they accused us of lying, said they never received any emails from us regarding questions about our stay, used false names, and swore at us.

The Inn at Coyote Mountain is up for sale and the owners are clearly letting the quality of the hotel, staff and desire to properly manage the place go down the drain. Stay away!!!

PS The road leading to the hotel is beyond treacherous.

I spent 2 days at this beautiful hideaway in the cloud forest. The inn is absolutely stunning - it looks like an old Spanish castle. We stayed in the Observatory Suite with views straight to the Pacific ocean, glorious sunsets, an incredible canopy bed and huge tiled bath. It was hard to leave the room! Hiking around the property was nice - we got lost (our own stupidity) and one of the hotel staff came out to find us. The food is good though not as excellent as I would have hoped, given the cooking school etc. The owners were not there so perhaps the food is different when they are around. The road from the nearest village to the inn is pretty abysmal but we drove ourselves, make sure you get a good 4WD vehicle with good ground clearance. All in all I would gladly go back!

“Well worth it”

My wife and I stayed at this comfortable inn for 3 nights and loved every minute of it. This is a great retreat place. We did not get to stay in the Observatory (but we took a look and it is fantastic) but our room was very, very nice as well. Very high ceiling, wonderful bathtubs, and beautiful textile decorations and furniture made the room extra special. But most of the time we spent outside. The sunsets from the Inn are the most beautiful I have seen in my life! We got some rain, but generally July was an okay time to be there. The road is dirt for the last mile or so, but very passable. We visited the gardens, hiked on the property, and then went to the nearby canopy tour. In all, wonderful. The staff were very nice--locals entirely. We plan to come back for an anniversary during the dry season.

That was outrageous in a GOOD way - holy cow. That place is INSANE - again, in a good way! It's way off the beaten path, only has 5 rooms, the owners came and gave us a tour of their 70 acre property that they are actively restoring because it was used for cattle, but contains 3 different forest zones and has beautiful forest and mountaintop. One of the owners also cooks an elaborate 4 course meal for you, which we ate in our own private dining room because there was no one else there! The view is indescribable. We overlooked the Pacific Ocean, the bay, the Nicoya Peninsula. It was expensive, but worth it for our last night of our honeymoon. And yes we drove ourselves which was great.
