“Historic Hotel; fine charm mantained with care.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

I was here in April. Wonderful stay, despite I checked in before 22:00 on a weekday and the Restaurant was already closed. You come to Skovshoved Hotel if you fancy atmosphere, old charm, specific danish old and new design. To be considered is the possibility of seaside walks -this coast is a jewl on its own. You may visit Copenhagen from here, and also discover the other sites of Sjaelland (Helsinghor, Hillerod, Klampemborg and the countryside).
It's positioned as premium hotel and I believe it fits expectations -but remember: it's an old, charming Danish house, not a modern, refurbished international hotel.

Room Tip: Sea View, no discussion.

...in a sleepy country town, outside Copenhagen.

Skovhoved Hotel is a little bit warned out but quite charming. My room had a big comforte twin bed, sitting area, wide screen tv and balcony with ocean view. Didn´t have breakfast but tried one of the two restaurants and my meal was great. Staff correct.

I can recomend it if you want a couple of days of tranquility.

Room Tip: Room with balcony.

Spent a night here as a romantic getaway. The hotel is very close to Copenhagen with bus services to the door from Kongens Nytorv, from where you can catch the metro to the airport. It took us only 40 minutes to ride there on our bicycles from the central station in Copenhagen.
The room (11) was charming in an 'good old days at the seaside'-sort of way. Huge bed, lots of white paint and a small, but clean and functional bathroom, plus a large balcony facing the sea - and the house opposite, so not an unobstructed view. Perfect for a read and a glass of white wine. Note: The balconies on this floor are in reality one large balcony divided by rails, so you'll be close to and in full view/hearing of your neighbours - but as he was a quiet chap, we did not mind.
The service was fantastic: Smiles all around and the food at the restaurant; breakfast, dinner and the packed lunches, were good with really great bread.
The only downside is the lack of an in-room kettle, so you cannot make a cup of tea - and the restaurant charges 126 DKK for a small pot with 6 petit fours - and the fact the blackout curtains did not quite cover the windows. And in midsummer the sun gets up really early in these parts.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street have view, perhaps partial, of the sea, but also the traffic noise.

We booked this hotel ten months before our trip as we were determined to have a room with a balcony and sea view. Other reviewers have complained about the dual carriageway between the hotel and the sea but we found it very quiet at night even with the windows open. When we arrived the hotel was full of wedding guests but we were still treated in a special way. Do not expect a large hotel experience with porters, etc. We actually prefer a hotel with some local character rather than an international corporate experience. Our summer booking included dinner which was fantastic, a picnic and free bicycle hire. However we made full use of the bus which stopped right outside the hotel to travel into Copenhagen. We also used the bar next door which serves hearty food and on two occasions walked to a very good cafe/restaurant which I will review. The Italian cafe down on the harbour also serves tasty pizzas, pasta, etc. Our room was lovely, although a little short of storage space, particularly in the bathroom. The public rooms are really comfortable with big white sofas and candles everywhere. The breakfasts were superb, some of the best we have had. There is something for everyone. The only niggle would be that the paper napkins used at breakfast are rather small. All in all a lovely trip with very helpful staff. The man on reception recommended we bought a Copenhagen ticket which can be used to get into most of Copenhagen's attractions including Louisiana in Holbaek, plus buses and trains. It definitely saved us quite a lot of money.

Room Tip: Try for a sea view as it is a great view.

This hotel has the potential to be really good. Its in an seaside location 5 miles outside of Copenhagen, although the view is spoiled a bit by a dual carriageway, but its still lovely to see the sea) and you can hire cycles or get the bus right on the door step. The lobby area was nice, although could do with a little facelift and the lady who checked us in was very nice. Our room was 16, it was on the road in front of the hotel and the dual carriageway about 50 meters away, so I'd definitely suggest earplugs if you'd like to sleep with the window open which we had to as the room was very hot. Also, the pillows are a bit odd, they're like very soft square couch pillows, rather than a rectangle pillow, which for us was uncomfortable.

All of the breakfast staff were really nice, and the breakfast buffet was standard, nothing special and therefore rather overpriced for what it was, but everything in Copenhagen seems quite expensive.

However, we had a really bad experience at check out. The man in question was rude to the point of aggressive, we were really shocked at his attitude towards us, and have never been spoken to like that in any hotel/restaurant/shop. He didn't give us a receipt and the whole situation was so awful that we didn't even ask because we just wanted to get out of there. It's such a shame because all of the other staff were lovely and the hotel has the potential to be lovely with just a few tweaks.

Room Tip: If you're sensitive to noise ask for a room at the back of the hotel and bring ear plugs.

We appreciate very much your efforts to comment on your stay at our lovely hotel.

We appreciate very much the positive remarks as to the standard of our breakfast buffet and that you were received at check-in.

Skovshoved Hotel is situated in the outskirts of Copenhagen and probably the most exclusive and by that very quiet area close to the city and with little traffic. So we normally do not receive any negative remarks as to noise from the road.

The pillows are – yes - Square pillow's, which is standard in Denmark. We do have other pillows for our guests, so please if you visit us Again, address the reception for this matter.

We are indeed sorry to note that you had an unpleasant experience at check-out. Our receptionist Bjarne has been with us for some 9 years – and it would be a long list if we should quote all the positive remarks and compliments we have received on behalf of Bjarnes service attitude and assistance to our guests.

Unfortunately Bjarne does not in detail remember the check-out process, and as such whether a misunderstanding has occurred between you and him. So I will very much excuse that you were left with such an unpleasant experience.

I regret I am not able to offer more than an apology and no real explanation

The Skovshoved Hotel is a very charming and cosy place to stay, however you can never escape the feeling that you have arrived in a Fawlty Towers episode. On the second day, the room had not been cleaned, probably because I asked them for a (lacking) sign telling the housekeeping not to disturb. Never got the sign, never got a clean room. However, that didn't bother me so much that I felt like telling the people at the reception desk, so maybe that's just my own fault. Asides from that, the hotel has everything a good hotel needs, with perfect wifi reception in the rooms. It's very close to the sea, which should be lovely in summer (now it was grey and rainy), and the room has a little balcony as well, overlooking the road, and, a bit further, the sea. Charlottenlund is about a 30 minutes bus ride away from the Copenhagen city centre, but there is a direct bus stopping right in front of the hotel, which is very handy. However, reaching it from the airport is harder, and if you are carrying some luggage, it is the best to order a taxi from the train station (which, however, takes a few moments to arrive).

The hotel is quite pretty from the outside. We stayed at it for the sole reason that it was rated the best hotel in Charlottenlund, where we needed to stay. Our room was on the second floor. It had a view to the ocean, a balcony, a comfortable queen bed, small bedside tables, 2 small chairs and a flat screen TV resting on a larger table. There was a minibar fridge, a closet and a small safe. The room was simple looking and utilitarian; more like a 3 star hotel room than a 4 or 5 star. There was no counter in the bathroom. Nor was there a plug for a hairdryer or electric razor. The towels were quite rough. There was no Kleenex.
Breakfast was fairly good on the first morning we stayed which was a Sunday. The breakfast room was busy and the buffet items were fresh looking and regularly replenished. Monday told a different story. We came down half an hour before the breakfast time ended and when we asked for scrambled eggs, as the container was empty, we were told we could have hard boiled. The 4 remaining hard boiled eggs were cold. This lack of customer service was unfortunate. We had considered having dinner at their Michelin rated restaurant, but not after the server couldn't be bothered to ask the chef to mix a few eggs for us. Probably our loss, but we discriminate where we spend our tourist dollar.

Room Tip: Obviously a sea view is best.
