“A Perfect 10!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2014

If the TA rating system went above "5" this would be a 10. It is near perfect. We stayed here for two nights during a two week Scandinavia vacation. Falsled Kro was the most relaxing part of the trip. From the moment we checked in we were treated with understated elegance. It is a causal place but everything is first class. The staff is wonderful, the rooms are immaculate, the beds are comfortable and the grounds are wonderful - well maintained gardens and lawns just to wander. We ate there both nights and had the chef's selected four course meals both nights. The fish, veal, duck and cheeses, combined with the desserts made these among the finest back to back meals we have ever had. It is quite pricey, but worth it - like everything else in life, you get what you pay for. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will certainly return.

This is one of the most beautiful and peaceful hotels we have ever stayed at anywhere on the planet. Excellent dinner (not formal) and a stroll to the harbour to watch the sun set afterwards. A truly magical experience, with excellent staff.
The gardens and annex rooms with their own terraces are private and stunning. They have got this spot on if you want to get away and feel special but chilled. Breakfast was immense with effectively a full tasting menu served on the terrace with views of the harbour and sea. What a place!

Room Tip: Go in one of the annexes for the peace, terrace and gardens.

Falsled Kro is a fantastic place. Beautifully situated in the countryside of the island of Fyn, it is an adventure in itself to arrive at this romantic hamlet of old and charming countryside buildings. The estate has been restored to a standard befitting its location, recalling a different day and age where nobility undoubtedly would grace the premices in horse carriages with their personal butler in tow.

But there is no doubt that we live in a different time and age. While the welcome was warm and heartfelt, we still had to lug our sizeable suitcases from the car, across the gravel and into our rooms ourselves. The person in charge of showing us our suite disappeared without so much of an offer to help as soon as we mentioned the luggage. This is a very first for us in a hotel of this standing and price range, and quite frankly highly disappointing.

The suite was beautifully furnished with high-quality amenities, however, and we have rarely slept better in any hotel bed anywhere.

The dinner was a bit of a mixed experience. Having spent several days of fine dining in Copenhagen on the way, we were spoilt rotten with world-class cuisine, which the kitchen couldn't quite match. Our sommelier was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable, but his tasting menu left a bit to be desired in quality on the cheese/dessert side. The cozy pre-dinner drink in front of the fireplace and the garden view from the restaurant were amazing, however, and the total ambiance more than made up for the other small shortcomings.

The breakfast was fantastic and one of the better hotel breakfasts I've ever had. Not much more to say.

All in all on the expensive side compared to other offerings in the same range, but then again there are very, very few competitors as far as location is concerned. But either the service level needs to match the price, or the price will need to match the service level. As it stands, this is not entirely the case.

We have known Falsled Kro since its impressive transformation into a top-rated gourmet hotel-restaurant more than 40 years ago. And we have enjoyed visiting for dinner perhaps half a dozen times over the years. This time was our first overnight stay, in room no. 1 overlooking a small harbour and the sea. We arrived late in the afternoon, on a rainy and windy day, and then enjoyed a couple of hours of relaxation by our own fireplace (just one match was needed to start the fire). More working fireplaces in the bar and the dining room made for a cosy and warm atmosphere throughout the inn. It is easy to imagine how great this place would be in the winter, especially around Christmas, but unfortunately it seems to be closed during much of the Christmas period.
But however much we enjoyed our stay, Falsled Kro does not fully deserve the high ratings and unqualified praise it often gets. The room was awkwardly designed with the bathroom downstairs and the sleeping area upstairs. And for a hotel in this class the furnishing was a bit tired. The wifi is included in the price (as is now standard practice in Denmark), but it was very difficult to catch the signal (apparently a new system had been installed recently).
The gourmet restaurant is Falsled's greatest asset, and the chef does an honest job of presenting you with a number of interesting menus (no a la carte options). But not everything is as refined as you would expect at the steep prices being charged. We enjoyed a smoked cod dish, which was great, but then had duck breast, which compared poorly with the magret de canard served by the average French brasserie.
It is probably difficult to run a top-rate hotel in such a remote area of the country, and there appeared to be only a few other guests when we visited. Might it be because of a disconnect between the high prices and what you get?

Room Tip: It is probably worth exploring the more recently renovated rooms in the two old buildings across the...

Whilst our 4 week trip through France had me in dreamland I almost doubted the ability of Denmark to deliver an equally enthralling experience, however there is one overnight stay that will last forever, Falsed Kro, in the village of Millinge, Denmark. Apparently it started life as a smuggler's Inn (because of its proximity to the ocean) and in 1744 Count Reventlow was granted a royal licence to run a public house. And now in 2013 the bar has been truly raised. The gardens, the ambience, and the gastronomic delights of this wonderful country Inn had us both 'pinching' ourselves.I have never experienced such incredible courtesy and service or for that matter the food, the bar and of course our room had me marking the Falsed Kro Inn 10 out of 10. No point in me saying anymore because you may think I am a 'little over the top!' OK, just put this place on your bucket list and stop dreaming, just do it!

A magical serene inn with food deserving of a Michelin rating. Whether you order the 8 course menu with wine pairings or the moe simple four course menu you are in for a treat, albeit an expensive treat, but one you will never forget. Even the Multi course breakfast is "to die for."

Room Tip: Ask for a garden room

It is no wonder Fyn was the native island of Hans Christian Andersen... staying at Falsled Kro is nothing short of a fairy tale. Many of the "Inn's" buildings date back to the seventeenth century, and are white with characteristic thatched roofs. Falsled Kro is situated in a lush and green part of the Danish countryside. It lies across from a charming port- during the summer it stays light until after 11 pm and from the amazing restaurant you can see the sea, sailboats, and a small unpopulated island. Per Hallundbaek is a world-class chef and we were spoiled by his inventive and delicious dishes (the menus change 8-10 times per year). He is also extremely kind and accommodating. We were lucky enough to stay at Falsled Kro for many days during a combined business/family/pleasure trip (we have stayed there many times before) and they even cooked a range of special dishes off the menu, supplemented by herbs and vegetables grown in their large vegetable garden. The kitchen excels at classic Northern fine cuisine such as (home) smoked salmon and caviar, but more experimental dishes (pigeon with foie gras, oysters with bone marrow and roasted croutons, fried poached egg with local smoked eel etc) were similarly memorable and delicate. The rib-eye we tried was second to none, and so was our specially ordered sole! The French trained sous-chef who cared for us when Per was off is a talented and rising star. His innovative Steak Frites (he made a selection of freshly made chips, fries, and mashed potatoes) and the accompanying sauce Bearnaise with a twist were some of the best we've ever had. The cheese selection is excellent and diverse, featuring a wide array of French and Danish cheeses that even my French stepfather was impressed by. Creme brulee was excellent, and so are the small chocolate truffles and eggs served with coffee/tea from their nearby chocolate factory. The wait staff (many chefs in their own right) are very kind and professional. Christian went out of his way to help when my fiancé and I wanted to visit nearby Faaborg (he drove us and picked us up) and offered to help us arrange sightseeing and kayaks. People at the front desk are nice and helpful, too. The rooms are spacious and light, many with small patios where it is possible to eat breakfast (which includes very delicious fried quail eggs and local organic specialities). The attention to detail is also great- along with chocolates on your pillow you get poetry and Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales. Bathrooms feature a line of high quality (and organic!) products. Some other reviewers have commented on the prices but I think you get a lot for what you pay for (and Scandinavian countries are more expensive than most other countries in Europe.) This is currently the only Relais and Chateau hotel in all of Scandinavia. Sadly, the hotel world in Denmark seems to be trending towards anonymous conference hotels, so charming gems like Falsled Kro are increasingly difficult to find. The only thing the place is lacking is a Michelin star or two.
