Our hosts were a retired carpenter and his wife. Sue still works outside of the home, so Richard was our primary breakfast cook and host. Everything you may have heard about the woodwork in this house is true. Richard said that, after 40 years as a professional carpenter, he finally built a house that no one could afford to hire him to build. It is truly unique! Rooms were appropriately sized and spotlessly clean, beds are excellent, furnishings just great!
Richard is the consummate host. Great Alaska stories, wonderful sourdough pancakes, willingly accommodated my wife's dietary restrictions, provided useful advice on things to do and places to visit. We were delighted with this B&B. Spent 3 nights there, and would return without hesitation.
Couldn't have been more pleased.

Wow! What a beautiful house! Just what we imagined a log retreat to be. The wood work is amazing. The house is set back in the trees. You feel light years away from town, but in reality it is only a few minute drive. The B&B is conviently located a couple of minutes from Seward and right off Exit Glacier road. We rent all three rooms, so we had the whole up stairs. It was perfect for us, the kids roamed between rooms and we could hang out in the middle common area. The upstairs common area isn't really big, but it worked just fine. We didn't plan on spending much time at the B&B hang out. We want to sight see. We would have liked a bathtub, but the showers were hot (as long as everyone didn't shower at the same time.) The breakfast was just what we wanted sourdough pancakes. They were wonderful. We had all we could eat and then some. Richard and Sue were wonderful people. We had a great time.

Don't be fooled by the one lukewarm review of this B n B. The owners of this house were nothing but accomodating and friendly to us, and they left us alone when we didn't want to be bothered. Being limited to certain parts of the house was not really a problem for us because we spent most of our stay outside enjoying amazing Alaska. The entire house is brand new, and thus spotless. The bedrooms and attached bathrooms follow suit - all with brand new fixtures and finishings. Morning breakfast was exactly what we wanted...no frills, just an endless supply of the best sourdough pancakes and bacon I've ever eaten.

If you are staying in Seward and you need a comfy home base for outdoor adventures, this is an ideal place to stay. Highly recommended.

Seward hotels were sold out for the night, and I heard about Sourdough Sunrise B&B. It was a short drive, maybe three minutes, from Seward on the road to Exit Glacier, Kenai Fjords NP. Situated in a isolated grove of huge trees, the B&B had some really nice artistic woodworking touches put in by the owner Richard. His front door is a piece of art!
The breakfast was HUGE! Sue had the bacon baked- not fried- which was really tasty. Homemade jam, excellent coffee, juice, and of course a stack of sourdough pancakes.
The hosts are lifelong Seward residents, and had lots of information to share. Some good stories too.
I booked a single room, which had a terrific bed mattress and a large private bath. The entire place was spotlessly clean.
They have Wi-Fi too, which was handy.

“Seward, AK: Sourdough Sunrise B&B - a little disappointing”

Sourdough Sunrise B&B does indeed have beautiful woodwork. And some very nice quilt work as well. But we were disappointed in the hospitality of our hosts. It's the only B&B that I've ever stayed in where we were locked out of the kitchen/den except at breakfast! (When asked, they did unlock it for us - but the host specifically said that it's not the way that he does things there.)

But one of the things that I value in the B&B experience is the feeling of not being confined to a single room. I've never actually cooked anything at a B&B, other than microwaving some water for tea, but I like to be able to feel that I can. I like to be able to browse their books in a common room. And that was what this lacked.

Breakfast seemed a bit plain - I've come to expect truly nice breakfasts at B&Bs that offer full breakfast, or else volume plus variety. Breakfast here was coffee or tea, pancakes, bacon and fruit. At least the fruit was different on the two days, and fresh. I have other minor complaints, all trivial, which taken alone were inconsequential, but taken all together added up to disappointment.

They are nice people, and he is an excellent finish carpenter, but hotel keeping is not their metier.

This B&B is located on Old Exit Glacier Rd, just outside the Seward city limits, so the location is fine, as long as you have a car. Exit Glacier is worth visiting and not too strenuous.
