“Signs, Signs everwhere a Sign”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2008

My wife and I spent four nights with our son and his wife and our 3 grandkids at box canyon cabins. We stayed in Wolf's Den. The cabin was very nice, clean and well furnished. The beds were very comfortable.

We thoroughly enjoyed Seward. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking. We strongly recommend the Renown Tours Cruise of the Kenai Fjords National Park and the Exit Glacier hike.

We were dissapointed that the extreme fear of being sued manifested it's self even in the "Last Frontier." The first day we were at the Box Canyon Cabins our two oldest Grankids were entralled with the simple pleasure of walking on the rocks around the pond in front of the cabins. On the 2nd day the owner returned and said he wasn't comfortable with the kids being on the rocks and on the 3rd day posted signs to that effect.(our legacy at box canyon cabins). The kids were crushed.

Besides that our stay was outstanding. The area is secluded and beautiful.

  • Liked — Clean, comforable room in beautiful surroundings
  • Disliked — signs about playing on the rocks

We recently had large rocks placed around the pond on the property. We had had two small signs made when this was done asking guests for their safety to please stay off the rocks. However we resisted displaying them, until we notices two small children playing on the rocks without supervision. We were concerned that they would either fall and hit their heads or fall in the pond and droun. We asked the guests to please have their children stay off the rocks.

The next day the children were back playing on the rocks. I felt that since our verbal request was ignored we would need to put the signs up to protect everyone. I'm sorry the children felt crushed that they could no longer play on the rocks.

The grounds and cabin were very nice, as in the pictures, but I was very surprised by the owner's behavior. Arriving after morning check out time and before check in time, we attempted to locate someone in the office and by phone to ask about early check in. When our attempts to locate someone were unsuccessful, we found our cabin and discovered that it was vacant and very clean. Moments later, the owner stormed over, shouting "Can I help you??" with a very unpleasant expression. There was no introduction so I had to assume this was the owner, and after I apologized several times and offered to leave until the official check in time, the owner was still very abrupt and abrasive. I apologized and admitted I could have waited, even offered to leave; despite my attempts to resolve the situation, I felt very unwelcome and I felt that the owner could at least have been civil, cordial, pleasant, or a bit more customer oriented. I would not stay there again. The owner's replies to other complaints clearly indicate a serious lack of concern for customer satisfaction and this was apparent in my own interaction with her.

We loved our cabin. It was clean and everything was in good working order. I also loved the sleeping loft but if you're afraid of heights or not very agile you'll want to make sure to book a cabin without a loft. The code to the key box was mailed to us ahead of time so there was no formal check in/out procedure which was nice. We were left on our own the whole time, which was fine with us. We'd stay there again if we're ever back in Seward.

First let me say, if you are looking for concierge service this is not the place for you - Barb and Cliff both have full time jobs during the week so you will be expected to fend for yourself for the most part but that is not a problem. They will provide you with all the information necessary to move into your cabin and get comfortable and if there's an emergency the phone in the office is available. Second, you needn't wonder - the cabins are exactly as advertised and are spotlessly clean. They ask you to remove your shoes when in the cabins but one look at the gray volcanic soil and you understand why. Our stay was very nice. We had a problem with the water heater but Barb and Cliff took care of it as quickly as humanly possible and were very considerate of any inconvenience to us. For our part we understood that things break and a little patience was all that was needed. The location is quiet and serene - the perfect getaway. I highly recommend this place.

  • Liked — The quiet location
  • Disliked — Had no problems - liked everything

Stayed here with my wife and older son. We all really liked this place. Stayed in Bear Cabin. Good location. This was my second trip to Seward and will stay here when I visit again. Great value for the money. Disc TV and internet, great. Would have liked a phone in cabin but the one in office building was O.K. Shower was on the small side. Had a great time.

  • Liked — Location, fun staying in a cabin, and clean
  • Disliked — small shower and no phone in cabin

Our stay at Box Canyon Cabins was the best of all the accomodations during our month of travel in Alaska! We traveled from Fairbanks to Homer, and many places in between. These cabins are 10 minutes from the hub bub of Seward, convenient, yet a wonderful romantic feeling of wooded seclusion, peaceful, and serene. We stayed in the largest cabin with the front porch, upon arrival the cabin was spotless, warm, and the kitchen was supplied with everything we needed to prepare our own meals. It felt so much like home that there were days we didnt want to leave the cabin and merely enjoy the seclusion and quiet splendor of the wooded peaceful surroundings. By far these accomodations are the best for the money, conveniently located to all activites available in Seward as well as the Kenai River. A short drive to Cooper Landing for fishing on the Kenai, Exit Glacier for hiking, and charters, Kayaking, and sightseeing in Seward. The owners were both accomodating and very gracious. Our next trip to Alaska we plan to stay here for the duration and use Box Canyon Cabins as our home base to the Kenai Penisula. Had our other reservations not been paid in full we would have cancelled them and stayed here for the remainder of our trip.

  • Liked — Convenient yet secluded not your typical tourist "trap" Great value for the money
  • Disliked — Everything was ideal nothing to list for this question.
  • Tips/Secrets — If you expect to be pampered and catered to this is not the place to stay (ie room service etc

We stayed here for two nights in August. After reading the reviews, was a little apprehensive. But we had a great time. Stayed in the "Eagle's Nest" cabin, equipped with a full kitchen. Very comfortable. Only thing missing, according to my wife, was a small sofa or love seat. Otherwise, it was great. Very close to Seward- which is a neat little town. Don't forget to go on a glacier cruise.
