For one of the most popular hikes out of Seward, we were surprised by the difficulty of Mt Marathon. We accidentally took the Cliffs on the way up - if you want to go on the slightly less dangerous (though still very steep) Roots trail, make sure to intentionally aim for the right. We did the hike a second time from a different trailhead on 2nd St (from the yellow gate), and found it much more enjoyable. This route takes you up into the Bowl, which is a small valley of alpine meadows surrounded by the snow-capped ridges of Mt Marathon.
