“Probably the best B&B in Seward”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2010

It's kind of on the fancy side, with its own innkeeper and housekeeper, but that didn't detract from the B&B (I'm pretty informal, so I don't tend to seek out fancy places). The room was comfortable, location was beautiful (right on the lake), and the owners and staff were very friendly. They even brought up a TV w/DVD player to our room. The breakfasts were scrumptious! There was very organized info about area restaurants, which was helpful, and they had DVDs and books to borrow. They also have canoes and kayaks that guests could borrow. We borrowed two of the kayaks, which we were able to launch directly into the lake and spent a wonderful morning paddling around to see the sockeye spawning, eagles, and loons. One of the highlights was the hand-dipped gourmet ice cream bars they gave out each evening--it was a great way to meet and converse with other guests and owners.

We had an enjoyable stay at this B&B. The innkeeper, Ginny, was wonderful and provided delicious well rounded breakfasts, with other options if the prpared hot breakfast wasn't to your liking. We stayed in the Lakeside Suite which was very roomy and comfortable. The bed was very comfy, I had some of the best rest of my entire 2-week vacation here. The private bathroom is not attached to the room, it is just down the hallway and is also spacious. The door to the bathroom is clearly labeled as private, but it does not have an exterior door lock and any guest can help themselves to use of the bathroom (which we're 99% sure another couple staying at the B&B did.. this is no fault of the B&B, but certainly rude of the other guests!). Since it cannot be expected that the owners or innkeeper could possibly keep track of the privacy of this one bathroom, it would be nice to have an exterior lock to prevent public use of the private bath. In addition, although we never felt unsafe whatsoever, there are 3 doors into the suite and the rear door did not appear to be locking - to be fair, we did not ask about the lock so we may not have been working the lock correctly. The B&B also provides canoes & kayaks for use on the lake and we paddled down the length of the lake one evening and watched the eagles and loons. Overall we were very happy with our stay.

We stayed in the huge Lakeside suite which was clean, comfortable and had a huge deck overlooking the lake. It had a separate entrance and Bear lake is beautiful. The kayaks are free for the guests to use and we kayaked twice in the lake. The salmon were running and we saw many in the feeder stream. Several hikes are nearby. Breakfast was great!

Bear Lake Lodgings is a wonderful little hideaway just outside of Seward, AK. The location couldn't be better (as long as you have a car) - it is a quick drive into Seward (about 10 minutes) and right in the backyard of the B&B is a calm, serene lake where you can canoe or kayak to your heart's content while you are staying there. The lake access was one of the highlights of the place - eagles perch in the trees, salmon jump around in the creek at one end of the lake, a mother duck and her little ducklings paddled along with us, and we followed a family of loons as well (and heard them calling at night and in the morning). Staying at this B&B was one of the highlights of a most amazing trip to Alaska. We really can't say anything negative about the place. We lucked out and happened to be there at a time when not only the innkeeper, who was great, was around, but also both Pat and Dennis, the owners were around as well, so we got to hang out with them and hear lots of stories and get good advice.

We had read on TripAdvisor that the breakfasts were continental and did not include a warm meal, so we were pleasantly surprised that each day we did have a full breakfast - eggs one day, french toast another, and a frittata the other day. The french toast was so good that I copied down the recipe for myself.

We stayed in the Resurrection Peak room, which was nice and quiet up on the third floor. The only downside is that it has a shared bathroom, but it was never a problem and we knew ahead of time that we would need to share bathrooms. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the view of the lake from the window was stunning.

It was an amazing place to stay - wish we could have stayed there longer. Seward is a great place to visit as well.

Our accommodations were outstanding and suited our needs of traveling with two young boys. The breakfasts were exceptional in quantity, quality, and variety. One of the daily treats was the ice cream at night--a specialty of the house. What made our stay most memorable was the location of Bear Lake Lodges and the willingness of the owner, Dennis, to teach our boys how to fish with "real" fishing rods, to take them for boat rides to see some of the wildlife up close, and to experience fishing at the ocean, river, and a nearby lake. Our visit to Bear Lake Lodges was clearly the highlite of the journey to Alyeska. A special thanks to Dennis and to the innkeeper, Ginny.

One peek at the picture of the B&B from their website was enough for me to book our first night in Seward here. Located just a few minutes from town, we rolled in just in time for the hand-dipped ice cream bar served by the owner every night at 8. The building has 3 floors and 4 guest rooms with ample space for everyone. The open floor plan on the main floor offers views of Bear Lake from the dining and living room areas. The rooms are clean and tastefully decorated, the beds super-comfy and the hot breakfasts delicious. They are happy to accommodate dietary preferences if you let them know in advance. The B&B is located on Bear Lake and they offer their guests free usage of both kayaks and canoes, and life jackets are provided. The lake is rife with wildlife and eagles and waterfowl are observable from the deck as well. I am an outdoorsy person who generally prefers to camp, and I think Bear Lake Lodgings does a great job of providing a place to experience the outdoors and still enjoy a comfortable and inviting place to stay. I truly enjoyed the company of both the hosts and the innkeeper, which more than anything made me want to go back there. So we came back for our last night in the area after a couple of nights camping!

Bear Lake Lodgings is the perfect peaceful retreat just outside Seward, near one of the most popular hikes in town to the Exit Glacier and Harding Icefield. The B&B is located on a gorgeous lake, surrounded by pine trees where bald eagles nest. Kayaks and canoes are available to guests for exploring the lake (sadly, we didn't have time for this in the midst of exploring all that Seward has to offer.) Despite its secluded location, the B&B is just minutes away from the restaurants and shops of Seward - and nowhere near the cruise ship crowds.

The B&B has four rooms - we experienced two of them, as the room with two twin beds was the only one available for the first night of our stay. We then shifted to the gorgeous, tastefully decorated Deck Suite, that overlooked the lake and opened directly onto a deck. The bathroom had a jacuzzi tub and a rainfall shower. The beds were incredibly comfortable - between the quiet of the location and my exhaustion from hiking, I had the best sleep I've had in ages. Each morning, we were greeted by a delightful homemade breakfast - waffles one day, frittata the next, prepared and served by Ginny, the warm and hospitable innkeeper. Coffee (a little weak for my taste, but plentiful) and orange juice were in ready supply. I loved our stay at Bear Lake Lodgings, and will definitely return when I visit Seward again.
