“Beautiful, don't hesitate to go there!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

We just spent a week at hotel Alga, so the impressions are still more than fresh (we checked out 2 days ago). It's directly on the beach, I would say, you get down the stairs and there you are, really a great location. The beach is very nice, with pebbles but not big ones, very soft (at least to me) when you get into the water, which is indeed crystal clear. The beach is, of course, free, but you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas (40 kunas each, if I remember well). If not, just bring your own towel or something and find yourself a spot. It is really impressive that half of the beach in width (it's kilometers' long) is shade and the other half is sunny, and it's natural shade (pineapple trees, typical for Croatia). So, if you want to be in the sun, you get a spot closer to the sea, and if you want shade, you just get a spot 5-6 meters further from the sea. If you prefer pools, there are 4 of them in hotel Alga, all with salt water. The water in all of them was really warm when we were there, my kids loved them. There are a lot of sunbeds around the pools but it's better if you get up earlier to book one for you. The restaurant is really big and we got our own table that we used throughout the whole stay in the hotel, both for breakfast and dinner. The food is great, as you would expect in Croatia, it is buffet style, of course, a lot of choice, fish, meat, vegetables, cakes, something for everybody. The important thing is that this is also a family-type hotel, the fact I didn't know when I was booking. There is a Mini Club for children, Mini disco every night and the entertainment team and they are all very good. There are a lot of children in the hotel and, although this hotel is not advertised as such (on Bluesun website only hotel Afrodita is a family hotel in Tucepi), this is truly a great place for families with children. Besides this, there are every night shows for all the guests (singers, dancers etc). The rooms are clean, we had a superior double room for 4 of us, it was really nice, just above the stage on the first floor, we could watch the shows from our balcony. Tucepi is also great for walks in the evening, you just turn left or right from the hotel and there is a long path, without cars, stunning...
I give all 5 stars to this hotel and I recommend it to anyone.

However, if I were the newly-appointed manager of this hotel, I would deal with these things:

1. I would appoint someone to be in charge of the pools' area. Not necessarily life guards but someone who would keep an eye on things there: first, to make sure that there are no outsiders (non-guests) using beds and pools (yes, I know they were there, a number of them) but also to make sure that the house rules are respected. There is a list of rules at the pools saying " no jumps into water", no use of balls in the water" etc but everybody is doing it, so why have the written rules there?
2. Again, about house rules: when you enter the restaurant you see a board with rules :" no shirts without sleeves for men ", no beach footwear" etc but actually many people wear shirts without sleeves and actually everybody walk in slippers. Even the person working there told me that they closed their eyes on these things. So, why have those rules so visibly posted there?
3. I would also have someone at the parking all the time. I saw somebody from time to time but that could be better, I think, as I couldn't find a space when I came, which is not a problem, as one can also park at hotel "Afrodita" space, which is only 20 meters further away, but I would still have the "parking issue" better organized. In short, there are enough places but it's a bit messy and someone should be there to tell me right away where to park. Just an idea...

These were just personal observations in case I become the manager one day but since I was "only" a tourist I must say that I simply loved this place, together with my wife and kids.

Room Tip: We had a room on the 1st floor, it was okay but maybe you want a one higher, so you can have a direc...

Dear Zoran,

Thank you very much for your kind words. We are happy that you were satisfied with our service and are appreciative of your detailed input.
We highly value that fact that you offered a list of suggestions for our management. This will be helpful, especially since you have pointed to the very same things some of our other guests had previously mentioned too.
We couldn't but agree with you on the issue concerning the pool deck: as inviting and relaxing as it is, there should be a better sense of order. Your comment will help our effort to make a case to the management to employ more personnel that can oversee the area.

You have a good eye and great way of communicating the points. We are confident you will make a wonderful manager some day. We hope to see you again.

Kind regards,

We (family with 2 teenagers) spend one week in August 2013 at the Bluesun Alga Hotel in Tucepi. The room with seaview had a good size, was clean and had everything we needed, including a really nice seaview. Staff was very friendly and the rooms were very well cleaned every day. WiFi is free and works mostly ok, although not always stable. Tucepi is a good location for trips to Dubrovnik, Split, Krka National Park, Mostar and Rafting on the Cetina (highly recommended!).
The first disappointment was the huge dining area, which is located under the pool and has this 'basement' feeling to it. The food was ok. Not a huge selection, but what they had, tasted good. After two days, we had wished for a bit more of a variety. Prices for the drinks were reasonable. The worst thing however, was the air condition in our room. We had a technician twice in our room who basically told us, that the AC was working perfectly. But the room did not really cool down, although we had the AC running 24/7. With an outside temperature of around 40 Celsius, that was a real disaster and meant sleepless nights all the way to our departure. The pool (saltwater!) area is nice, but mainly shallow, so not a lot of diving for the boys. And Tucepi is crowded in August. So if you want a decent spot in the shade at the beach or at the pool, better get up early. The beach is packed during the day, with sometimes no more than 20 cm between you and a total stranger.
In the hotel, guests were of all ages and quite well behaved. No noisy groups! And no noisy restaurants or clubs in the vicinity.
So if you don't mind the crowds, you will be fine, except for the AC. With a proper AC, a freshwater pool and more variety in food, it would well deserve the 4*.

Room Tip: We were told, that rooms in the main building, parallel to the beach and with sea view were the warm...

Dear tuatara 123,
Thank you for your review and for taking the time to outline the pros and cons of your overall experience in Alga. You are absolutely right, the issue with the impaired AC is unacceptable, especially under the 40 C degree weather. We'll use your comment to argue for the procedures that secure better AC inventory maintenance checks during and at the end of each season. So, thank you for helping us detect this problem.

Hope to see you again at some point in the future.

Bluesun Alga is one of several Bluesun hotels in Tucepi It is situated north of the harbour close to the beach with only the nice boardwalk in between.

We had a friendly reception from the receptionist and were given the necessary information. We got room number 310 with a view to the pool area and the sea. There are two elevators from the reception area to the rooms and a third one would have shortened the waiting.

The romm was OK, not the biggest we have had, but the smallest either. A comfortable double bed and a small table and 2 chairs. The bathroom was nice with a shower cabinet. The towels were changed every day.

We had breakfast included in the price. The first morning we were told where to find thinngs and which tables we could choose.

There were large buffet tables with warm and cold dishes. More than enough to cover the needs of a hungry guest. During our week we did not see any changes of the buffet, but as said you had a lot of choises.

The pool area is large. I am not to keen on sunbeds side by side without any room in between, but that was the situation around the pools. A lot of guests went down very early to reserve their favourite beds. That is how it is in a lot of hotels, but some days nobody turned up to use the beds. Maybe someonbe from the hotel should have been there to remove the towels and make the beds available for someone else?

If you do not want to use the pool, but swim in the ocean in stead, it is only to go down the stairs to the boardwalk and jump into the ocean. The beach consist of pebbles som remember to bring swimshoes.

There is a poolbar, but as far as I could see they did not serve any lunch. However, if you walk down the stairs to the beach the Bluesun hotels have restaurants both on the left and right side of the stairs. They seem to be separate from the hotel, so charching on the room is not possible.

There is only a 5 minute walk to the harbour. On your way yoiu pass a lot of restaurants and a supremarket and a bakery. There is also a couple of cheaper small supermarkets to be found if you go out through the hotel entrance, turn left and then go right on the next corner. Pass the crossing and look left and you will find a Studenac shop 15 meters up the road. Another supermarket is 150 meters further on the left side after the next bend.

Dear Eskog,
Thank you for your review in which you took the time to share your experience of stay.
We appreciate that you have described the wonderful hotel position. We are also happy that you recognized the variety of meals. This is especially true for buffet dinners in which the meal variety changes daily within a 2-week cycle.
You are absolutely right about the sunbeds. Sometimes it becomes tricky with people leaving their personal belongings for too long. Our management is aware of this problem and is working on implementing measures (in addition to explicitly informing guests through posted signs) that will help improve the situation, without being invasive.
On a more happy note, we are glad that you enjoyed the stroll down the Tučepi boardwalk.
In Alga we organize excursion and adventure trips such as rafting in river Cetina, Wild Horse Photo Safari, Mt. Biokovo hike, and sightseeings of attraction towns such as Dubrovnik, Split and Trogir.

We hope to see you again.

Stayed here for a week from 20/6/13. Nice hotel, varied food, clean rooms. A number of people not staying at the hotel appear to come in and use the sunbeds, parasols and pools, thus limiting the amenities for paying guests.

Concerns were that drinking glasses were allowed around the pool area, which is very dangerous, plastic ones are much safer. Also, the catering staff do not wear gloves when handling food, I actually saw one waitress move the bread around in the baskets without wearing gloves. One of our party was taken ill with d and v after a gala dinner there,

The corridors are very hot, we experienced a heatwave whilst we were there and the corridors were stifling. .

Room Tip: If you want a sea view request a room on 3rd floor or above and room numbers above 340, 440, upwards...

Dear guest,

Thank you for your review. We would like to extend our apologies for what you have experienced in the dining area. This behavior ( mishandling of the bread) is not acceptable, and is in complete violation of our catering standards. The Food & Beverage teams have been notified of this, and certain measures taken... and thank you for pointing this out.

As for the use of the sunbeds, parasols and pools, in addition to having the posted signs, we will see that our lifeguards and pool personnel increase certain (discrete) control measures that they already do. Please consider that we continually try to do our best, given the size of the area.

We hope that your stay in Alga was nonetheless pleasant and that you'll consider visiting us again. Thank you for pointing all of the aspects of the service that were problematic as it will help us be more watchful.

Thank you again...

We came with a group of friends and arrived late at night. It was a surprise to open the curtains next morning and see the close proximity of the mountains. We booked through Saga and the care and enthusiasm of the Saga rep was infectious. She loved Croatia and we soon shared her enthusiasm. The hotel is situated across the promenade to a rather picturesque, if stony beach, with clear blue water. There is plenty of shade on the beach from pine trees and all along the promenade to the pretty harbour there are lots of seats on which to sit and enjoy the sea and mountain views.

Although a very big hotel it was clean and staff were very attentive. The only time it really became a problem was at dinner which is self-service buffet style when hoards of holidaymakers try to get their meals at the same time. There must be a better way of doing it? The food was plentiful and there was always a huge selection of hot and cold alternatives.

We did several tours during our stay and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and especially the location close to pretty seaside villages and towns as well as beautiful mountain scenery. We had lovely weather despite the early May holiday and only had one wet day which followed a spectacular thunderstorm during the previous night.

Room Tip: Request sea view minimum 3rd floor close to restaurant location.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your descriptive and positive review. We especially appreciate the manner in which your writting had portrayer a certain sense of being inspired by the destination. As you yourself have recognized, the small town of Tučepi, where Alga is located, is in the close proximity to the Biokovo mountain on one side, and the sea on the other.

I would also like to thank you for recognizing our staff's effort while pointing to the need od finding a better way to handle crowds during buffet style dinner. We can promise to work with our operations team to come up with alternative seating, such as assigning specific dining slots to various groups etc.

Thank you once again.

Huge hotel on a great location if you're looking for a vacation or traveling with children. It's located literally at the promenade, yet far enough that there is no noise at night when everyone in "city" move from beach to promenade. We were there in June, two weeks, and the weather was fantastic, we had no cloudy or rainy day. Just the sun, the sea, the beach and the hotel food which was, by the way, great and always fresh. We had half board, that included breakfast and dinner, and in the meantime, we had no need to eat. The hotel has a swimming pool with sea water in it, which was colder than the sea, and there was never any place. Which is not a problem because it took us about half a minute walk to the beach. The rooms were clean and neat, regularly cleaned, and there weren't any unpleasant experiences the staff.
