“Kona Reef Delight”

We spent 7 days at The Kona Reef A16 Condo (booked thru Abbey Rentals), the condo was great, the view was spectacular.

Close to town (less than a mile) so walking to town, and avoiding the drive was nice.

Kona Inn , Lulu's are our favorite eating places. Try the mai tai's and sunsets at Don The Beachcomber at their ocean front bar.

Jack's Dive Locker ,good scuba diving.

We will Vacation here again in 2008.

Love the Big Island

We stayed here on the final night of a 10-day trip to Oahu and the Big Island. Frankly, the biggest disappointment of the enire trip was Kona itself--it is a big, loud tourist trap compared to just about any other place on the Hawaiian islands--but that's a topic for another website. If you want the calm, peace and beauty of Hawaii, do not stay in Kona. There are so many nicer choices, but you need inside advice or a travel agent who is truly knowledgeable about Hawaii. But if you want to be near lots of people, party late at night, and eat at places like Hard Rock Cafe, then by all means stay in Kona!

We stayed one night in a two-bedroom, oceanfront unit (D-38). The view of the ocean from the fourth floor was fabulous, and pretty much the reason to be in this resort. I would highly recommend an oceanfront unit; the angled view of other units is "so-so." We originally booked D-8 on the first floor, but when both the security guard and the desk attendant began lecturing us on the importance of locking our windows and doors (because some of "the locals" have too much time on their hands, they said), we realized we had made a mistake and asked to be moved to a higher floor. The staff was very friendly about making the switch. Fortunately, D-38 was open for us, and like the unit below, it is at the end of the building and so also enjoys nice windows and views from windows in all the rooms--a big benefit. The balcony was huge and had a nice size dining table; a great place to hang out and enjoy the constant sound of the surf and watch the surfers.

The unit was well equipped, but having read the other reviews, I wish we'd taken an "owner managed" vs. a "resort managed" unit, because most of the closets were locked up and there were no amenities, condiments in kitchen, etc. The rooms were good-sized and well furnished with older, wicker-type pieces. Sofa cushions had that seaside-resort kind of smell. The kitchen was large and well equipped. The master bath was recently, nicely updated. The only real negative, and a big one, was the carpeting--soiled and worn. Why would a rental condo owner choose a) Berber-style carpeting, the type most likely to show wear patterns or b) off-white color, the most likely to show soil, let alone both a) and b), the "nightmare rental carpet" we were stuck with?? It should have been replaced probably two years ago. No excuses!

The swimming pool is small, kidney shaped and 6' deep in the center. It has a pretty but slippery tile bottom. The jacuzzi is adjacent, and also four BBQ grills. Entire area is under lock and key.

Our short stay was punctuated by the nighttime hoots, hollers and swear words of the "locals" who used the public beach access on the north end of the property (adjacent to building "D".) Do not stay in this building if you do not want to hear the "locals" come up and down this drive to get access to the hotel waterfront, which they apparently find to be a pretty good party spot. The waterfront is mostly rocky with some sand, and nice to sit at by day. At the hotel's south end is a small beach used mostly by surfers to access the waves. The closest public beach with good snorkeling is 3 miles down the road to the south. (But this is not the big island's best snorkeling, by any means; the island is not known for it, in general, and the really good snorkeling is south of Hilo.)

We paid $329 for one night and would have accessed a private-owners site if we'd thought of it! Do that, and also ask when your carpet was last replaced, before you book!

  • Liked — Ocean view; size and layout of unit.
  • Disliked — Soiled and worn carpet; musty furniture cushions; trashy looking front office.

We had a one bedroom condo in building E. Number 511. It had an exellent view of the pool area and a nice view of the ocean. It wasn't oceanfront but due to the angle of the lanai you could sit in one end and see ocean rather well. The condo owners had remodeled half of the kitchen but the rest of the unit was a bit dated. Everthing was clean and tidy just not new. We were fine with that and felt very comfortable. Having a washer and dryer in the unit was a great perk. The communal pool and BBQ area were always neat and never crowded, most of the time nearly empty. We would stay there again.

  • Liked — The Condo.
  • Disliked — The construction noise near by. That was mostly during the day when we were gone.

We got back from Kona yesterday. When we arrived at Kona Reef I was a little concerned because there is construction going on on one side of the condos. But we had reservations for an ocean front condo and as luck would have it got A-22 about as far away as you can get, almost a corner unit, very quiet and just lovely. The condo was updated in February nicely done colors and fabooo sheets on the bed. The view can't be better. We were right there about 30 feet from the water. The first night we were there two sea turtles came up to the tidal pools and hung out for awhile, just amazing. The building itself is nicely maintained, it is older, but again well maintained. We bbq'd one night by the pool, there are several grills and you just take your food down and go for it. Remember to take your beverages in plastic glasses...our condo had everything we needed. The bbq was great, a good chance to get to know some folks. Everything was very clean, we just had a wonderful time. Easy walking distance into town, lots of great shoping...so here is what this girl would recommend, until construction is complete watch out for units on that side of the complex... ocean front is just great, not that much more expensive, second floor for us was better than ground floor, more privacy. We ate every breakfast in the condo, what's not to love? Do check out U Top It for food, it was great. We went to a bunch of places and I will write more in the general area. The only down side, the four hour time change...what's up with that?

  • Liked — Great view, very nice bed, listening to the ocean
  • Disliked — ummmmm, nothing.

Stayed for 5 nights from the 20th March 07 and it was much too short. The resort was great, not luxurious but clean and with everything that you need for a relaxing holiday. The pool and the BBQ area was excellent and the location perfect.
Our condo was ocean front, spotlessly clean and on the 1st floor (I think you would say 2nd... but in Aust. we have a ground floor) Everything that you can imagine was available for a great holiday. Snorkeling gear, beach towels, binoculars, books. We could have left half of our gear at home. We loved our balcony so much that we had almost every meal off it. Incredible sunsets, surfers and dolphins and the sea crashing on to the big black rocks below was amazing. The only thing that would have made it even better would have been blackout curtains in the bedroom. We highly recommend this resort. We booked VRBO 8296..owner was very helpful.

  • Liked — The views, the cleanliness and the pool and BBQ area
  • Disliked — lack of balckout curtains

My husband and I just celebrated 10 years of marriage with a trip to the Big Island. We stayed in a privately owned condo at the Kona Reef. Condo D-12. This condo has a fabulous view of the ocean from the lanai. The entire complex is quiet and very relaxing. It was such
a better option for us to be able to cook a steak on one of the stainless gas grills in the pool area. It really cuts down on all the
eating out. The complex provides access to a computer/internet during
office hours in case you forget your computer, has a pool, hot tub, large grills and preparation area to include a sink. The condo is close to area shopping and restaurants as well as all the snorkeling sites! The condo itself is fabulous, and very clean! The owners treat you like friends in planning for your vacation. They have games, movies, books, snorkeling gear, binoculars, all the kitchen equipment you could possibly need to include spices and condiments, washer and dryer, and a dishwasher. We had a great time and will be returning as soon as possible!

  • Disliked — nothing

We stayed in a one bedroom, ocean view room on the 3rd floor. I thought the location was great, I could walk to the shopping area (even though I was pregnant, not a problem!) - and some restaurants were close by. There is a small sandy beach nearby, which was nice to sit on. The weather was great, especially for January. I don't have any complaints about this place, and would stay there again.

  • Liked — Quiet, private, clean, great location.
