“Short stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

We stayed here for 2 nights at the tail end of our trip. It's in a great location within walking distance of shopping and restaurants on Ali'i Drive. We booked privately through VRBO and had a great experience with the owners. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: Some of the units only have a partial ocean view. If that is important to you try to book a unit clo...

We paid extra for an ocean view room here and even added a request on the reservation stating that the view was the most important detail to us. We are much more accepting of wear and tear, noise or other inconveniences. We ended up in a room with what could be considered at best a "peek-a-boo" view. In addition the lanai faced the park and was level with everyone walking from the street to the beach. The picnic table in the park was well used by young men in the late afternoon to hang out and drink. Needless to say, we kept the curtains closed at night or when gone. We never used the lanai. It was horrible. When we saw the room, we immediately called and requested a different room as it was not ocean view. We were told sorry but they are sold out. I was really mad and very disappointed. The room was clean and well decorated. It would have been nice to have something to put your clothes in or your suitcase on other than the floor. The kitchen table is set nicely with all of the dishes. While it looks nice, I like my dishes in the cabinet with the table available for use. The parking fills up quickly and it can be a challenge to find a spot in the evening. You must use an actual key to get in and out of the pool area. I did not care for this as you are locked in. Overall, I did not care for this resort. The rooms are also small compared to the other condos we've stayed in.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the street are better. I would only stay here if I was assured of ocean front.

Aloha,

Thank you for your review. Our rooms (Castle Hotels & Resorts) are required to have dressers and also a luggage rack in each unit for our guests clothes/luggage. We also keep our dining ware in our cabinets. If you can provide me with the Unit number you had stayed in that would be helpful. There is another company that is also on property which this may pertain to as they do set the dining table. If so I would be more than happy to share your review with their management company too.

Mahalo!

Had a ground floor unit in building D, unit 3.. The perfect view with the ocean 10 feet from the lanai. If we weren't out at a beach, we were on the lanai. The amazing mornings having coffee and watching dolphins and whales. Also the perfect sunsets. *sigh* Can't say enough about the view. It is not a sand beach, so don't expect that. The location was a 5 minute stroll to the nearest restaurant and a few minutes after that to the Kona "strip" of restaurants and shops. We enjoyed walking to the area every evening.

The unit itself has been partially updated. The kitchen cabinets were tired looking. Who cares……..I'm not there to cook while on vacation. [That's my husband's job if we don't go out ;)] The decor was not my style, but again I didn't care. The unit was very clean and had everything you could possibly think of. The owner is very thoughtful and caring. All you need are your clothes and yourself.

The only reason I mention cabinets and decor is in case you are expecting a brand new, immaculately decorated condo.

(Our only complaint is the bed. Seemed like it was quite old as it sagged quite a bit in the middle. My husband even slept out on the futon one night.)

I really cannot say enough about the location…….and THAT VIEW! If we are ever to return to Kona, I would book the unit again.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review of our Kona Reef condo D-3. Even after owning this condo for 10 years, we are still amazed every time we arrive there and see the magnificent view and the ocean waves breaking so close to the lanai.

We're sorry to read that you found the bed uncomfortable. The mattress and box springs were purchased exactly 2 years ago. The good thing is that your husband had a chance to see how comfortable the living room futon is! Lots of our guests like to sleep on it to have the waves lull them to sleep.

The condo itself was gutted and totally refurbished several years ago. All new appliances, cabinets, and counter tops were put into the kitchen, the bathtub was replaced with a walk-in "rain"-type shower, and the whole place was painted. The kitchen and bathroom cabinets are solid wood (handmade in Kona) rather than the wood veneer that you find on most cabinets which makes the door surface look totally smooth. Real wood, of course, isn't always smooth and has little imperfections but we think of that as giving the cabinet doors character.

We'd love to welcome you back to our condo again next time you come to Kona.

Perfect Place To Stay If You Are Doing 2 Weeks Especially Having To Eat While You Are There That Can Get A Little Pricey. Best Thing Is It Is So Close To Town Easy To Walk, But The Best Is The View If You Have Ocean Front You Can't Beat it! Second Visit To The Same Place And Will Surely Go Back.

Brilliant accommodation, met all of our needs.

Pool was fantastic, cleaned every morning and was quiet enough to have the pool to yourself most days.

Views from our room (C21) of the ocean were amazing, and was always great to wake up to and watch the sunset in the evening.

Inside the accommodation we had free wifi, large tv, nice sized kitchen and a very comfortable bed.

We did lots of activitys on the island so was a great base to use, but a car rental for the island is a big requirement to make the most of your trip. Thankfully there was ample free parking on the resort to accomodate, and we never had to fight for parking.

Finally the accommodation is within a 5 min walk to the costal village of Kaliua-Kona which is great for meals and shopping. Very helpful staff and great place for a Honeymoon! We loved it!

Top tip, instead of going to the large Walmart for your shopping needs go the Sack N Save which is closer and had more options available (and cheaper if you register for free for a Sack N Save discount, just need to sign up at the till, even if your not from the USA)

Well managed & maintained pool BBQ area. Security monitored incl. covered parking. We stayed in an ocean front privately owned unit selected through VRBO. All guests we spoke with had praises for Kona Reef. Easy walk to the downtown commercial district. Pricier than, say, The Ali'i Villas, but felt the extra cost was justified.

We stayed on the second level in unit D12 and had an incredible ocean view from the kitchen, living room, and lanai. The unit was very clean and had all the supplies you can imagine needing aside from food and your clothing (including towels, snorkeling gear, beach chairs, dishes, etc.) We were a five minute walk from the heart of the town. The neighbors where quiet at night and friendly. You can walk out to the front of the property and go down to the water and the little tide pools which are teaming with all kinds of little creatures. The best thing about it was the sunset every night. We even saw spinner dolphins from out lanai. The unit is very well furnished and made it feel like we lived there. If I can ever afford to get to Hawaii again this is where I will be staying!

Room Tip: We stayed in unit D12
