“Great place to stay in Kona”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

We selected the ocean-facing suite and paid for breakfast in the Honu restaurant. Initially we got a room in the east wing which was not ideal, too close to traffic, although it did have a view of the water. We asked for a change to a quieter room and they were able to give us a much better room in the west wing. We had a beautiful view of the bay and beach, and the room itself was very comfortable and roomy. Service at the hotel was excellent. The buffet breakfast was very nice, with nice touches like small belgian waffles with fruit and coconut syrup, and made-to-order omelets. Of course, there was pineapple, although it's not grown on this island. The restaurant has a large outdoor area, which if one has breakfast early, say around 6:30, is nice and cool and quiet. The display of an enormous racing canoe, and the photos and artifacts on display, are quite interesting. I went skin diving in the little cove facing the hotel and saw innumerable and very varied exotic fish. It is an easy walk to bars and restaurants in Kona, and the staff are very pleasant and helpful with directions to other areas on the island.

Room Tip: Ocean views are nice, but the other direction, facing Mauna Loa, also provides nice views. All the...

We absolutely loved our stay in King Kam's! It was a fantastic location and perfect for our first stop on our Hawaiian honeymoon! On arrival we were treated to a box of macadamia nut chocolates and made us feel welcome! The rooms were clean and semi modern with an island design to all the furniture! We had an ocean facing/pool facing room and it was perfect. The concierge was extremely helpful with the tours we booked and also got us some great deals with blue hawaii helicopters! We will definetly stay at King Kam's again!

Having never been to the Big Island before, I had no idea where to stay. I chose this hotel partially because of good reviews that I had read, but also due to the location. I can honestly say, that I didn't see any other hotel during my visit that made wish I had chosen differently.

One big issue I see with many other hotels on the BI is what I call the "isolation" factor. Many of the hotels that are north of the Kona airport are located in areas where there are few things to do outside of the hotels. I believe that this is on purpose to keep you in the hotel spending your money on their property and paying their elevated prices. Sorry, but I don't want to pay $25+ per person for breakfast at the hotel. Even in the seemingly busy Waikoloa village area, there aren't many choices for food outside the hotels. It's a 30 minute trip by car if you want to go into town.

I chose the King Kam because it is in the heart of the tourist area in Kona, so there are a huge number of choices of restaurants, shops, and things to see within walking distance of the hotel. I could just cross the street and have 3 choices within 100 feet. If you want cheap and easy, there are several fast food choices close by including Taco Bell, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Jack in the box, and more. All are within walking distance if you are willing to go a few blocks. For more upscale choices, there are several to choose from on Alii drive just a short and pleasant walk away.

Our room was on the 4th floor and had a good view of the bay and pier, and the hotel pool area. The room was clean, well decorated, and well equipped. A small fridge was standard. The general interior of the hotel was clean and nice, and looked to be recently remodeled. Lots of local artwork hanging in the lobby areas. All of the hotel staff that we spoke to were very nice and helpful. The only minor gripe was the parking situation. It appears that the hotel parking lot also doubles as public parking and parking for the evening luau. Depending on the time of day, the lot can fill up and make it hard to find a spot reasonably close by. Short of restricting the parking to hotel guests only, I doubt that there is much that they can do about it. Come to think of it, this has been pretty much the same situation at any hotel I've been to in Hawaii.

Overall, I would say that I made a very good choice in this hotel and I was never left with the feeling that I should have chosen somewhere else. If you want a huge pool for kids, this is not the place. LIkewise for the party crowd. We visited several other hotels while we were on the island, and I didn't see anything that was a better fit for my needs. We wanted quiet, reasonably priced, well equipped, and conveniently located, and this hotel hit all of the marks.

Room Tip: I would recommend the west tower, or definitely "ocean view" on the east tower. Higher fl...

We liked the hotel location and amenities very much. Unfortunately, we did not approve of their policy on feral cats, which we learned of after we'd been staying there for a while. Rather than working with the local rescue organization, which has a feeding and trap/neuter/release program, the hotel chose to round up cats and take them to the shelter. On our next trip, we'll seek out a more cat-friendly hotel.

Great location-walking distance to pier and activities. Basic room-needs makeup mirrors and in room coffee missing. Thermostat in room didn't work. Beds very comfortable. Luau had to be moved indoors because of rain but excellent food and dance production.

Stayed here a couple of weeks ago, and were very happy. We stayed in the East Wing, on the third floor, which overlooked the hotel entrance. We had read the reviews and had requested the West Wing on a high floor. Our request was not granted…I’m not sure why. Nevertheless, although there was some noise from time to time, it was comfortable, and we actually still had partial water views along the foreshore.
Had a good experience with food and service at the pool bar for dinner, and can recommend it.
Overall a good experience at a comfortable hotel.

Room Tip: West wing, or at least high floor.

Located at the beginning of the Kona Reveira (ALII Dr) this hotel has everything. Beautiful and immense lobby full of beautiful native art displays. If you don't rent a car and are taking guided tours, this hotel is within walking distance of all the best eating and shopping in the town of Kailua-Kona, It is right next to the jetty from where most of the cruises depart, has a small but secluded alcove for a beach, ideal for people with young children and is also the receiving point for the inter-island cruise ships. You can also enjoy the best Luau festival without ever leaving your hotel.
What is most impressive about this hotel is the polite, very friendly and considerate staff. At check in we had a substantial delay in getting our room at the appointed 3 pm time. The front office manager Gerald Cristobal immediately upgraded our room, personally carted our luggage and introduced us to our room. He also threw in a full 5 course dinner with wine where the hostess was waiting to welcome us and what was most sensitive was that he visited us during dinner to ensure everything was good. Throughout our stay he constantly communicated with us to guide us on places to visit. As a former exec, of a large hotel chain we were surprised at this level of service with a personal touch. Usually only profound apologies are an order of the day.
Most of the other similar hotels are in isolated locations. This hotel is in the heart of the town, on the beach and if you are renting a car as we did mid-point between the Northern beaches and the southern volcano.
If you are looking at value for money, this hotel has more, We would never hesitate to book this hotel again when revisiting Kona and would definitely recommend it to family and friends visiting in the near future. We just hope our friend the front office manager, Gerald Cristobal is still around, if not at least his legacy
