“Great location, very clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

I stayed at this hotel for 7 nights, the first week of December 2012, for a conference. The location was very convenient, close to lots of restaurants. A grocery store and drug store are located 3 blocks away and the rooms have mini-fridges which is handy for storing snacks and drinks. There was also free wireless! My room had a partial ocean view (mostly roof and pool) and the balcony was nice to have. The room was very clean when I arrived and was cleaned well each day. The only thing I missed was having a guide to what the TV channels were but that was not a big deal. I noticed other reviewers had problems with their bathtub draining but mine was fine. The beds were comfy and there were lots of pillows to choose from! I appreciated that there were swimming towels in the room. There is a large historic display in the lobby which is quite interesting. There is an ABC convenience store located on the main level that sells food, drinks and souvenirs (reasonably priced). I swam in the pool once but it was colder than the ocean so I didn't spent much time there. I only at in the restaurant twice, for breakfast both times. The food was okay but the service was kind of slow. There is a nice beach for swimming/snorkeling but there are always canoes going in and out so be aware of your surroundings. Turtles also come in and out of the area which was pretty cool! On the other side of the pier there is a public access swimming area that is great for snorkeling and longer distance swimming.

I stayed with my husband at this hotel last November 2012. The hotel is centrally located, with plenty of restaurants and souvenir stores just steps away. Also just outside you can take a trolley for $2.00 each way that will take you to various locations and little beaches located on Alii Drive. At walking distance you can visit the local market which you will find local fruit and products at a reasonable prices.
The hotel itself was nice looking if not in pristine condition. All the room have a balcony but we stayed on the second floor and our view was the roof from the building below and the parking lot, so I never spent much time there. The room and bathroom was specious enough. Housekeeping was not great. They left pillows all piled up on chair, pillows on the floor, and I found items left there from previous guest under the bed. Only I after I complained with front desk room was left in better condition. The parking is $10 at day, of which we were not told until we got there.
They have two restaurants, one more formal and a grill at the pool. The restaurant was very pricey but the offerings from the grill more reasonable priced.
The pool is very small and not great looking. The beach is extremely small, right on the port so I did not swim in it. However, they have nice lawn chairs on the beach, right against the wall of the pool where you can rest and get a little tan.
They offer free yoga and hula lessons which it was very nice and I had lot of fun learning to dance the hula.
My husband is particular with Marriott but in my opinion there are better hotels just around the corner.

Room Tip: Do not stay at a room in the second floor because all you are going to see from the balcony is the r...

We stayed here primarily because it was the closest "decent" place to the airport and because after 2 weeks traveling around the Big Island needed to get some "tourist tat" shopping done in Kona before heading to the airport, and also were hoping to kill several pints at Kona Brewing Co without worrying about driving any distance. For both of these goals, this place serviced well. 5 min walk from the brewpub, the main shopping drag of Kona, and Hilo Hattie, but be prepared for no view, no beach (what beach is there is very sad, especially if you've seen the rest of the island... Unless you have small kids, in which case this place is probably a dream), and a huge "bus tour/Asian tourists by the plane load/discount package tours from the Midwest/corporate conference location" vibe. Knowing this, the room was spacious enough, clean, modern, etc. basically, it was a mid-range "business class" hotel with no extras and the price was high for what you get in any other locale, but average/low here. We won't be staying again on the Big Island unless it's for pure convenience, to drink and walk home, one night only. $10 parking per night, free wifi. Huge place. Kona Brewing Co has great beers and surprisingly good food; we'd stay here simply to be able to walk up to eat here again.

Four stars because it is clean and convenient and recently remodeled and the staff is swelll and it is totally worthy of the Courtyard brand. But, man that lobby smells funky. All of the public areas (and they are expansive) had a reallllly strong smell that we did not dig. Baby powder? Dunno. Odor disappeared on room floors. We have been coming to the Big Island most every year for more than a decade and stay the balance of our time in a more pricey place up north. We have never found a decent option for a first night/last night stay in Kona. This is as close as it gets. A better option if you are willing to drive a bit further is the Sheraton at Keauhou. We've been doing that since they reopened and will return. But this was worth a shot, and again no real complaints aside from the smell. We just like Keauhou and the Sheraton better. FYI, this hotel was the old favorite "King Kam" before Marriott bought it. So it has stuff (meeting rooms, shops, restaurants) that you would not typically find in a business-type Courtyard.

This hotel is great! The location is perfect, the rooms have been renovated recently, and the beds are VERY comfortable. The service is also very good and the staff is very pleasant and helpful. The only minor negative point is the size of the bathroom (might vary from room to room); in my room it was very small, it was difficult to close the door while being inside. This is not a big deal although. Overall I recommend strongly.

We stayed three nights at the Courtyard over Thanksgiving week (2012). We were originally booked at another hotel that went out of business. We were offered three replacement choices with the Courtyard being one of them. Not only did they honor our prior reservation, but matched the package we had (B&B) which was 50% less than what they normally charge.

The Courtyard was recently renovated after the last tsunami on the Big Island and you could certainly tell. The property is right on the bay in Kailua-Kona. The pool is small, but is supplemented with its own beach. It is centrally located to everything . . . beach activities, shopping, sight-seeing. The staff was extremely friendly and very helpful . . . unusal for a large hotel nowadays. We were given a room upgrade upon registration, which included free WiFi in the room. There is self-parking for $10/day, which is very reasonable for Hawaii. The Buffet Breakfast was warm and tasty . . . and included an omelet bar, fresh pancakes and waffles . . . but standard fair for a buffet.

We will certainly return to this property on any future trips we take to the Big Island.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view upgrade. You may get it.

My family stayed at this hotel for one night over Labor Day weekend because we were flying home the following day and wanted to be close to the airport (we were in Hilo before going to Kona). Labor Day weekend was very busy at the hotel because of the 2012 Queen Lili’uokalani Long Distance Outrigger Canoe races, and I think our stay at the hotel was different than normal because of that.

The hotel room was spacious and the beds were comfortable. Our room was on one of the upper floors and had a partial ocean view. It probably wasn't worth the extra money to get a room with a partial open view though since it was nothing special; we mostly looked down at the top of the air conditioning units. It was fun to watch some of the races the following morning, but the hotel was noisy and busy the night we stayed there. The racers took over the pool, beach, and restaurant area. Luckily they seemed to retire for the evening early, probably to get ready for their races the following day. I think the hotel should have warned us about the event when we made the reservation. If they had, we wouldn't have stayed there.

I would probably stay at this hotel again if I needed a place to stay in Kona. However, I think it would be smart to avoid staying in Kona since there are so many beautiful places to stay on the big island, and Kona isn't one of them.
