“Nice Hotel, nice staff, convenient location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

A few months prior to our May arrival, we requested a west wing 6th floor corner room which they noted in our reservation. When checking in, they had no note of our request (although I called twice to confirm) and they proceeded to give us a 2nd floor "ocean view" that was actually a view of a roof and you couldn't even see the ocean. They said they had no rooms on the 5th or 6th floor available. Noting our disappointment (because we were staying 14 days), once in our room, the phone rang (which I could barely hear as my husband was loudly saying "this room sucks" as he was checking our our view). The front deck had checked with the hotel manager and they offered to upgrade us to a east wing 6th floor corner SUITE!!! Awesome suite with two large rooms, king bed, two flat screen tv's, two full bathrooms, three closets (one walk-in), two dressers, safe, two decks that overlooked the dock (that had lots of activities), beach and pool.
This room became our home for two weeks and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
Tips:
Either bring lawn chairs or rent from Kona Boys (shack on the beach) and expect a pool full of kids with minimal seating unless you come early. We found the lawn area in front of the restaurant a great location to relax, then walk to the pool or ocean for swimming. Suprisingly, there are lots of fish in the water, even with all the activity at the dock and beach.
Grocery shopping at the ABC stores were reasonable. Wine and vodka was cheaper in Hawaii than Oregon!! Walmart and Safeway was 5 minutes away.
For meals:
Good Restaurants:
Quinn's Almost By The Bay was recommended by locals and directly across the street from the hotel. Good food and inexpensive.
Kona Brewing had great beer, ok wine selection and great food.
Kona Inn Restaurant was one of our favorites for dinner and appetizers. They have two menus, one more expensive so depending on your mood and budget, you have options.
Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill was very nice and a $10 cab ride or 20 minute walk (stop for mai tai along the way)
Kenichi Pacific served awsome sushi and was our favorite restaurants. In a shopping center with no view but meal was delicious.
AWFUL restaurants: Bubba Gumps Shrimp Company, Kona Canoe Club, Pancho & Leftys Cantina
Scuba Diving: we highly recommend Kona Diving Company!!! Jeff and Dave are very knowledgeable and chose the dive spots each day depending on the weather and currents. They took time to explain each spot before we dove along with what fish we would see. My husband dove three days and I dove twice (two tank dives).
Snorkeling: Place of Refuge - snorkeled with 8 spinner dolphins but kept our distance! Highlight of our trip and it was free!

Room Tip: East Wing top floors had best view of town, dock, beach and could watch the luau's from our deck

The hotel is in the middle of what's happening in Kona. For the price the rooms are adequate and the staff is outstanding. We discovered that we left a computer in room while we were at airport and housekeeping went immediately in room, secured the computer which enabled us to get it back. Would definitely return again. The only thing that would be a great addition would be a Concierge Lounge.

Great location in Kona with all amenities and friendly staff. It's a big hotel with many rooms...but the rooms are new and comfortable and come with a small patio. Pool area and ocean access is perfect.

As you would expect from Courtyard Marriott - the hotel offers elegant, very clean, nicely furnished, large and very comfortable rooms with good amenities and very friendly service. It seems to be one of very few larger hotels in Kailua-Kona. It is also one of the few with beach access (also for kids and snorkeling) and is located at the end of Ali'i Blvd very close to everything (walking).

I would recommend this hotel strongly, it offers great value for the price.
Some older guidebooks mention outdated rooms needing renovation but they are from 2010 or earlier. In 2012, the hotel looks like new and make a really nice and modern impression.

The hotel was nice. it is quite large. The actual beach area is very small but conveniently Kona Boys is right in front to rent kayaks, snorkel gear, paddleboards, or an outrigger canoe. There are plenty of shops and restaurants in short walking distance (although most coffee places are slow to open in the morning). The hotel had two queen sized beds, internet, and a clean bathroom (although the shower pressure was weak). The only thing that bothered us was being charged 10 bucks a day for parking. We were told that this was normal for all places on the island. Having circumnavigated the island over 14 days I can say that it was a outright lie. This place was the ONLY place we got charged for parking and in fact there is a free public parking lot two blocks from the Hotel. It just felt like we were being nickel and dimed. If they want 10 more bucks, just add it to the room charge up front rather than surprise people at the door.

Aloha Deevah77,
Thank you for taking the time to share your review. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed in our parking fees. The Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel does have a daily parking fee with in and out privileges. Guests feel at ease knowing their vehicle is parked in our secured parking lot.
Again, we sincerely apologize for the inconveniences that this may have caused you. I hope you would choose to stay with us again should you find yourself in Kona again.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

Thoroughly enjoyed a family vacation at the King Kam last week (early July). we stayed in the East Wing facing the back (didn't want to pay extra for the beach view)

Location: right on the corner of Palani and Ali'i, adjacent to the Kaileau pier. The shops/restaurants start around here, so a good stroll down the beach front. 5 mins walk uphill to Starbucks, Wendy's, Burger KIng etc.

Property: Incredibly neat grounds, manicured/lush lawns, Hawaiian torches, with a scenic, although not very wide, beach front area. the beach has decent sand which is raked daily. its not private; i understand beaches are public property so all the outrigger paddling teams tramp through it, but its not really crowded. There is a small shopping mall on the ground, with a fantastic ABC store, a new coffee shop just opened which serves great drip coffee and bagels, and a few other souvenir type stores. the property was flooded by the tsunami last year so all the carpets and furniture are brand new

Rooms: nice cool aircon, and quiet too. brand new carpets, new and clean duvets, beds are a bit too soft for my wife, but i was fine. 42in flat TV with lots of channels, a balcony but you can't smoke unless you pay $250 cleaning charge. The bathroom is also renovated with a shower over bath, powerful water (blasted my toothpaste off my toothbrush!!), OK towels, and green pool area towels you can take down. Overall, great and 5* quality

Restaurants: Decent steak and giant crab leg dinner buffet at the Honu. not open for lunch. Breafast is a fantastic deal, about $12 for American brekkie, $17 for buffet which means its hardly worth to venture outside. its lovely to site at the open window area or outside on the patio, facing the beach area. wonderful!! The Billside bar/cafe at the pool has basic pupus (snacks) and some sandwiches, pizza etc, but closed too early at 10pm

Pool etc: Not overcrowded, decent size pool. Usualy some sunbeds can be founds, jacuzzi was fun but smelt too chemically. American sized equipment in the gym, my kids loved it, and with TV and free chilled water. Decent "Island breeze" Luau in the grounds. tip: get there 4:15pm before the tour buses arrive and queue up

Service: staff are friendly and helpful. I never saw any security (and it was quite an open design with ABC store and peoiple coming and going) but I suppose that there are no security issues in Big Island, and Courtyards are lightly staffed

Overall: Really central and almost new from the renovations, its worth every penny and was a great stay. only gripe was there was no smoking except standing at a rubbish bin, so for recreational smokers its a bit of a disappointment.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms probably best avoided, seems a bit unsecure with people wandering around and thro...
