“Central”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2011

This is a large hotel – huge foyer with lovely flower arrangements but long corridors. It is an easy drive from the airport to this hotel. It is close to shops, restaurants, shopping centre and waterfront (where we came across a market on Sunday – road along the waterfront was closed).

To see the sea from our lanai we had to hang over the railing. The adjacent lanai could be seen when sitting outside.

We asked for a quiet room and we got one (overlooked roof between wings). We could hear the luau which was not unpleasant and it finished reasonably early.

Made reservation before it converted to a Marriott. Had some trepidations, from past run-down impressions. Whole hotel is super clean; looks like it was built from scratch. Beds are Marriott perfect, and rooms are nice and large. Bathroom clean and new, with shower-head at perfect height so your hair does not get wet (but removable so can do hair when desired). We had an ocean front room in the West tower with good views. Half the rooms look out at the opposite tower, so be wary when booking. The West tower is preferred as it is further from the traffic and more over the ocean, and a fourth floor or higher so you get view over the restaurant . Room was very quiet, and no noise from the town even as we left the large balcony door open.
Front staff very helpful.
Color scheme in the hallways is not quite right, but you are not there long.

Room Tip: Get an ocean front room in the West tower, 4th floor or higher.

We stayed in Kailua Kona for 5 nights at the Courtyard (by Marriott) King Kamehameha hotel. The hotel was just OK. The carpet is brown, as if the hotel was trying to hide the dirt or stains. It was basically just a motel - lower priced than a regular hotel - and we seriously considered moving to the Hilton Waikiloa, but since my son wanted to stay in the Kona area, we decided to rough it out. On one of the nights there was a reggae concert in the hotel's luau area, which was very irritating because the concert was extremely noisy. It was so bad that the walls and the door to the lanai were vibrating. When we complained, we were informed by hotel staff that the concert would end by 10:00 p.m. It did not. It ended past 11:00 a.m. Now I am a light sleeper and I had very little sleep on that particular night. I was so mad that I asked the hotel for a partial refund. They refunded me the parking fees, which were $10 a day. Additionally, although we had an oceanfront room, our view was that of the Kona pier - which can be unsightly. The hotel's only redeeming quality was the staff. We were greeted with a smile, and when we requested tissues or shampoo they were always promptly delivered. The internet was also free, and there were even computers downstairs if you did not bring your own laptop. If you want lower-priced rooms then stay here. But if you want something more upscale, go to the Hilton or the Fairmont or the Four Seasons.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the tower AWAY from Palani (or Alii) Street. They're a little quieter.

This is a very nice hotel, relatively inexpensive, with extremely friendly staff, and beautiful grounds. It is located right on the beach (small, but with lots of fish close to shore), and within staggering distance of bars, shops and restaurants. The hot tub is lovely, although the pool is not heated and could be warmer. The pool bar makes wonderful lava flows, and the food I had was quite nice. The breakfast buffet was more than adequate, with a great variety, including a made to order omelette stand. Our room was large, with a king bed and a sofa, and a lanai with a partial ocean view.

Stayed here for a brief 3-night visit and stayed on Marriott points. Perfect for a short stay, just wish there was a microwave in the room. There was a coffeemaker & fridge, though. Room was nice and clean, balcony w/chairs & small table. Only drawback was the bathtowels were a little thin and rough, but on the upside, our room had 4 pool towels provided. We never once turned on the TV (very relaxing!). There aren't curtains in the room, but a large, wooden "shutter" that slides closed. This was fine with us, but if you're looking for a complete blackout room, probably not the best for you. There was also sliding louvered doors on the bathroom which was sort of interesting. You can rent beach chairs and other equipment from a shack on the beach right by the pool. Music was playing Friday/Sat nights at the bar by the pool which was nice. ABC store right on the corner of the property so you can get your drinks/snacks/souvenirs conveniently. And the downtown area is easy to walk to from here. Tons of restaurants and shops there! Was kind of a quiet weekend, so we sort of expected to be upgraded from a partial ocean view to full view room as Marriott rewards members and we noted those rooms weren't full the whole time we were there. We didn't ask about it, though (probably shouldn't have to). Love this place overall and will definitely try to come back soon!

Room Tip: Try for upper floors for better views.

We chose this hotel because it had and was continuing a $35 million renovation. The hotel was super clean from the lobby to the rooms. Hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our room had a partial view of the ocean and was very spacious. Towels for the beach and pool were provided. Amenities were a pleasant surprise. Very nice calm beach area in front of the hotel was nice, as was the pool area. The Huna Restaurant located at the hotel just reopened and offered a buy one get one free entree. Food and service were excellent. The hotel is close to all of Kona shopping and restaurants. Would definitely stay there again if we make it back to the Big Island.

My, now, husband and I stayed here in October, in fact we had our wedding in the hotel grounds. We cannot recommend both the hotel and Kona Weddings, who have an office in the hotel, highly enough.

The hotel staff were friendly and helpful and the location fantastic for wandering out for lunches, dinners and drinks, although we also loved eating at the pool bar in the evenings (great bar staff). There was some refurbishment happening on the ground floor (damage from the Tsunami) but it was not a problem. The snorkelling from the hotel beach was better than when we were on the Great Barrier Reef.

The wedding ceremony was just us, Danny (minister) and Helen Cheek (photographer) and Henri from the hotel. It was great, having been together for over 20 years we hadn't expected it to be such a happy and moving occasion. Helen took some amazing pictures, and believe me that was an achievement as hubby and I are notoriously unphotogenic. I still smile to myself when I think about the whole thing.

Having read some of the more negative reviews here, I really can't understand them. For the price you could not ask for better and I can't imagine the staff that I met being rude to anyone.
