“Nice accommodations, roomy and convenient”

Bellevue, Washington
Feb 29, 2008

We stayed at the Royal Sea Cliff for two nights in mid February 2008. The rate was reasonable. We had a 2 bedroom condo with a partial ocean view. The room was clean and spacious. We used a travel agent IN Kona to make the reserevation as we thought a local agent may have better ideas about accommodations on short notice.

Check in was at 3pm but we arrived earlier. Our room was not ready but they said they would call us if the room became available. They did call us when the room was ready. That was nice.

When we first got to the room and opened the doors to the lanai we could smell cigarette smoke. I called the front desk to inquire about the smoking policy. I was informed that the facility was completely smoke-free, including lanais. We could see a pack of smokes and a dirtied ashtray on the table on the lanai one floor beneath ours. I advised the front desk and told them that it was annoying us. They took care of the problem right away. We were pleased.

The hotel did not have WIFI in the rooms so you needed to take your laptop to the open-air lobby and connect there. It made for a bit of a social gathering place and there was ample space to sit and compute. Connecting was no charge. Later on our trip we stayed at the Hapuna Price hotel. It was pricier and internet connection cost $10 per day. Why is it the pricier the hotel the more often you have to pay for connectivity?

The pools were a bit of hike from our room and actually we did not use either of the two pools, but they were right next to the shore and seemed nice.

Parking was convenient under the hotel.

The master bedroom had a King bed and the 2nd bedroom had a queen.

We had heard that some of the units smelled musty, but our unit was fine.

The location on Alii Drive was convenient to downtown Kona.

We would go back again

“Nice homebase while you play in paradise”

Wyndham Royal Sea Cliff

Feb 25, 2008

My husband, two ten year olds and I stayed at the Wyndham Royal Sea Cliff for six days in September of 2007. As I write this I have mixed feelings. Even though I rated the Wyndham an average I would stay there again.

While we were there we learned that the Wyndham corporation had just bought the property. They were working around the clock updating the outside of the property. There were painters and construction workers everywhere but they did not cause any noise or disturbance. The front of the property is pretty when you pull up. Parking is provided in a garage below the building. All the rooms are outside access which isn't great but they make up for it with all the beautiful plants in the courtyard.

When you first come off the elevators you come to the check-in window. They were helpful and friendly. We asked for a room that had been remodeled. We were told that we only had two choices. We could either take the handicapped room or another one.

She gave us keys to look at them both. She said she was sure once we had seen them we would choose the handicapped room. We had flown in from Georgia and had been up for 23 hours so we just took her word for it and took the handicapped room. Honestly, I felt a little uneasy about taking that room - kind of like I was illegally parked in a handicapped space.

We had a 2 bedroom condo suite. The room itself had not been updated but it was clean so it was fine. The kitchen had an old refrigerator with rust on it. The microwave, oven and stove were new. The dishwasher had not been replaced but it was fine. The countertops were the old formica ones from many years ago.

The dining room table was the biggest I've ever seen in a condo. It was a heavy solid wood 8 place table but it needed to be refinished.

The second bedroom had a full bed in it and a dresser and closet. I don't remember if it had a t.v. in it or not.

There was an apartment sized washer and dryer.

My biggest complaint was that the bathtub in the secondary bathroom didn't drain. After a couple of calls maintenance came. I'm pretty sure they dumped in some draino and called it fixed but it wasn't so we just didn't use it.

The living room was huge but the sofas were really worn looking. The carpet wasn't that clean. Oh, it was probably clean but just old and badly in need of replacement. They had a really nice plasma t.v.

The master bedroom had a queen sized bed and a lot of room. Even though it was wierd at first we ended up loving the bathroom in the master. There was no bathtub but that was o.k. The shower was huge and it was easy for me to wash my daughter's hair and get the sand out.

They had a information breakfast to tell you about what the island had to offer. Normally we don't go to those but we were glad we did this time.

The concigere desk was run by Expedia and they were great! We booked a snorkeling, horseback riding and a luau through them. They were good to help us sort through our options and help us find what would work for us and our kids. They warned us about somethings we had wanted to do (even though I'm sure he was paid on commissions) because it was too dangerous for the kids. I feel like I owe them the success of our trip - those are our best memories out of a 2 week trip.

They had a pool that we never made it to. After all, we were in Hawaii - who hangs out at a pool? The property is next to the ocean but there is no beach. There are stairs that go right down to the lava rocks and you can crawl out on them and the waves can crash around you.

There is a beach a mile down the road. There are beaches everywhere. It's a law in Hawaii that all beaches are public and even if they are next to a 5 star hotel anyone can come and go to the beach there for free.

They looked like they had a lot of crafts and activities. But, again, I don't know who would go to Hawaii and then stay inside the hotel.

We found the staff members very friendly and helpful. We were always served with a smile and were given good advice on where to eat and where to go based on our interests (ie. activities, restaurants and beaches, weather watch for places that required driving).

We stayed in a 2-bedroom apartment facing the parking lot in the back and the middle foyer in the front.

There wasn't much sunlight getting into the unit. The rooms were like a blast from the past and the level of humidity was noticeable upon entering the unit (it was ok after some A/C).

The furniture and carpet could use some refreshing. Interestingly enough, we were told that they were doing renovations in phases and units that received the makeovers were very pleasant.

Not sure if we'd stay there again, but would maybe possibly consider going back after renovations are completed.

“Outdated, Damp”

Our friend let us use her timeshare for our honeymoon. The first thing we noticed after we walked in our room was the smell of dampness. The carpet looked old and outdated. There were dust in between the bathroom sliding door. The bed sheet, the couch, and the carpet felt damp. We brought this up with the front desk towards the end of our stay. We were told we had to keep the temperature at a certain degree, have the ceiling fan on, and the sliding doors closed. I guess it's because the resort was by the beach, and Kona is pretty humid. Someone was supposed to come to check our room, but I don't think anybody did. We wonder if there were mildew in the room... To use the internet, we had to pay $5 per 30 minutes, and to print, we would have to pay another fee. We would not go back to this place again.
