“Condo 1-303 on the ocean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

Location, location, location! This condo is right on the ocean which made our stay very memorable. Falling asleep every evening to the sound of the waves...very peaceful! Waking up every morning and having coffee on the lanai...wow! Less than 1/2 mile away from one of the best snorkeling beaches in Kona...sea turtles and lots of fish. Five miles away from the Kona shopping area...convenient.

There were 7 in our party and had no problem with sleeping arangements. Yes there is no AC, but every evening the trade winds would cool the place off. If your looking for ultra modern with up scale appliances, this is not the place. The salt water does take a toll on anything metal. So, expect the typical corrosion on the sliding doors, appliances, and such. This did not detract from our stay. Just need to know information. The living spaces, bathrooms, bedrooms, and kitchen are all more than adequate. We would wake up have breakfast, plan the day, go on our day trip, return for dinner, and enjoy drinks on the lanai as the sun would set over the ocean. The sunsets were amazing.

Sandy was very easy to work with in reserving the property. She quickly answered any questions or concerns we had. Overall the experience was incredible. When we come back to the big island, this will be the place we stay at.

We stayed in Unit 2-203 and it was awesome! Well appointed and maintained. It is right on the ocean so the breeze was great and falling asleep every night to the sound of the waves crashing was amazing. The unit has no a/c but it didn't need it. Ceiling fans in every room, and a nice cross breeze made it very comfortable. Sunset from the lanai was fabulous. We loved having beach towels, coolers, boogie boards, etc.. to use (and we did use them a lot!) One of the best snorkeling beaches on the island is less than a half mile from the resort (Kahalu'u). This was a great place for a family of 4 to spend a week. We would gladly stay there again!

I had heard nightmare stories and read reviews about smelly or unkempt condos all over Hawaii, so I was wary of renting one. But condo #59 at the Surf and Racquet Club was such better value compared to hotels in Kailua-Kona and Sandy the owner was very responsive so we decided to try. The complex is gated and in an area that is not chaotic, traffic prone and loud like Kona. This condo is clean, well maintained, uncluttered, well stocked, organized and has a very nice location. The beds are great, the sheets and towels are clean and fresh looking, so is the furniture. There were beach towels and boogie boards, beach chairs, travel books, etc. We were treated to candies, coffee upon arrival. Not on the ocean but you have a nice view of the ocean from the lanai and can sleep VERY well with the ocean sound. It is about 30 steps to the ocean front. The pool is nice and clean and we often had it to ourselves. They have a rule about having no pool toys in the pool but we and others ignored it and no one complained. The complex is very quiet and not busy. There is a mall with grocery, CVS, cinema, etc less than 5 minutes away. Best of all a REALLY good snorkel beach, great for kids and beginners is less than 5 minutes down the road. This condo has no A/C but it gets great breezes and there are plenty of ceiling and portable fans. The washing machine broke while we were here and was fixed in less than 24 hours. The property manager is very nice and responsive. Finally if you are considering the Kohala resort area, this condo is about 45-50 minutes easy drive to those beaches. Minutes from coffee plantations.

Room Tip: Condo #59 affords a small ocean view and breezes but without the ocean view price tag. It is an end...

We stayed in Unit 197 (townhouse) in late April for two weeks and enjoyed it immensely. The location of the unit is great - steps away from a small beach with turtles in the morning and close to the pool. We ate every meal on the lanai and particularly enjoyed watching the sunsets during our dinners. The complex is a short walk from a wonderful snorkeling beach and just down the hill from a shopping mall with a large grocery store (with the best home-made pumpkin and banana breads). Sandy was wonderful to work with -- very helpful and enthusiastic. Although the unit is not fancy or luxurious, it is very comfortable. There is no dining table (or dining chairs) in the unit, but this didn't bother us since we enjoyed eating on the lanai. Be sure to visit the seahorse farm (near the airport) if you go!

Stayed in a 2 bedroom/2 BA condo in building 9 on the 2nd floor. Each unit I think is individually owned so it can be the luck of the draw. The furnishings are fine and came with nearly everything we needed. However this building is further back from the ocean and cannot catch the breeze therefore it felt stifling with no AC.
Positives is that it's right next to a beach where there are tons of sea turtles just coming up to the beach and great snorkeling.
If I had a choice, I would not return here. This was an exchange through Interval International.

Unit 176:

Pros:
- Clean home with attractive furnishings.
- Located along the lava-formed rocky coast with the ocean immediately at the rear of the unit.
- Full kitchen and laundry in the unit.
- Lanai and patio in the rear of the unit.
- Jalousie windows provide excellent cross ventilation with ocean breezes and can be kept open even during rain showers.
- Ceiling fans in each room and portable fans provided.
- Air conditioning available for additional fee (not needed during our stay in mid-May).
- Assigned parking space included.
- Resort has large outdoor pool, tennis courts and “community center”.
- Gated community.
- Ability to dine inside or out on the lanai.
- Very close to shopping center with large grocery store and restaurants.
- Beautifully maintained grounds.
- Sunsets each evening right out the back door.

Cons:
- Because of a high surf warning, the management closed covers over the lanai and the kitchen window on our last afternoon and evening, plunging the downstairs in darkness. This was done to protect the unit from possible breaking waves, but it changed the whole ambiance of the home, especially when we planned to eat dinner in the unit.
- Brighter lamps in the living room and dining area would be desirable.
- The owners request that no shoes be worn in the unit (pack slippers if you’re not into flip-flops).
- Low rates offset by $135 per stay cleaning fee.
- Very difficult to leave when your stay has ended!

Room Tip: Unit 176 is on the end with more light and privacy.
