We arrived at the Ohi’a Park Estate Kona, on Big Island after a "so-so" experience at a condo in town. Imagine our delight to meet the gracious owners who did everything to make our stay memorable and totally restored our enthusiasm for the Big Island.
The estate is a lovingly tended 3 acre paradise with flowers and fruit trees everywhere you look. It is in a peaceful residential area, not even ten minutes from downtown Kona and with a splendid sea view. As others have mentioned, it is high enough to be away from the crushing heat at the coast and sleeping without air conditioning meant no dry throats and no allergy problems.
There is a fully-fitted fitness room, hot tub and even an "English Pub" for celebrations.
We have travelled widely (Europe, Africa, USA, Australasia) and have never had a bed and breakfast experience to match it.
The luxury suite was spacious, brand new and decorated with a taste we have seldom seen. Everything (and I mean everything!) was impeccably clean and thought through to the tiniest detail – top quality toiletries, fresh flower displays, fruit, water and a stocked refrigerator. The bed was the most comfortable we have had.
Breakfast on the sea-view Lanai (terrace) was a delight (see photographs). Fresh exotic fruit, the best breads and coffee we have ever had in USA, yoghurts, cheeses and turkey ham were served up as a matter of course and then we were offered a full cooked breakfast too!
We too experienced (as we loved to call it) the fun wine, nibbles and chat time in the evening. The owners are friendly, accommodating, cultured, multilingual Swiss and know more about the Islands than most of the tour guides we encountered. They were more than happy to make recommendations which made our holiday the delight it undoubtedly was.
All in all, a stay against which all others (whether hotel or Bed and Breakfast) will be measured. A difficult job to find anywhere as good…we'll just have to go back!
