“Jan 2013 Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

It was our 12th visit to this hotel as it is one of our favorites on the Big Island. It has just undergone some remodel some for the good and some for... well let's see how it turns out. The rooms as usual are comfortable and clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful and no matter what the issue greet you with a smile. My only concern is how the lounge/restraunt is now configured. The main dinning room is only used for breakfast and dinner has been moved to what use to be only the lounge. The outdoor area is very crowded as anyone coming for dinner or a drink are crowed into the same area (manta ray viewing area is also in the same place). Seating for the lounge is limited and there were a couple of nights there was no place to sit. If you want dinner you had better call for a reservation or be prepared to wait. I talked with several managers and they said they had ordered more high top furniture and are still working out the kinks to improve seating. I will say the bar and restraunt menu though still pricey (welcome to Hawaii) is much improved and I would highly recommed the "tiki pupu platter". The ribs are excellent as well.

If you are looking for beach access there is no beach, but they have a great pool and plenty of area for everyone to spread out. The grounds are beautiful and there is a small harbor just a few hundred yards away where you can rent kayaks and go out for diving and snorkling trips.

Overall still a great place to stay at and we still plan to make this our main stay when we visit.

Room Tip: I would recommend the Ocean Front rooms to catch the sunset or that whale/dolphin that happens to cr...

Aloha! It is always a wonderful treat for us to welcome back guests and to be able to provide them with a vacation location where many fond memories can be made. All of us at Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay were happy to learn that you liked many of the changes that have taken place with our recent renewal. It was; however, disappointing to find out that some changes were met with less enthusiasm. We do apologize for any dining delays or inconveniences; we are working diligently to iron out any wrinkles and appreciate all feedback. It is an honor for us to be your main stay on the Big Island and we look forward to welcoming you back often. Mahalo.

We often stay here with our Starwood Points before and after our condo week stays in Waikoloa.

First important thing.... there is no beach! But the grounds and pool are amazing and you wont miss it. Plus you would pay 3x as much at another hotel to be on the beach. You can always drive to an amazing beach, we have a few favorites. The large waterside is great for all ages and there is a smaller slide for the little ones. They have a sandy bottom kid pool (which is really a small pebble pool - don't get your hopes up). The small splash pad area is nice for little ones too. There are free pool toys you can checkout too.

Stay away from the volleyball court - its more of a cat litter box (we were told). They always had local teams playing there anyways.

The location is kind of out of the way but is near a great snorkeling cove. (again you'd have to drive to it) worth it though!

Rooms are large - Flat screen TV's , separate vanity area, fridge (love this, so we could store milk and other things for the kids), sitting area, lanai with chairs and a table, comfortably beds (signature Sheraton Sweet Sleeper Beds). The layout of the hotel is kinds of confusing at first and we had to weave around different wings to get to the pool or the parking or the front desk. We were able to get close self parking by the conference center.

Food was yummy (resort prices). Service is excellence. We will continue to frequent this resort.

Room Tip: The ocean view rooms overlooking the pool were nice so we could sit on the balcony and watch other m...

Thank you for all your wonderful comments about Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay. It was so nice to see you again and provide you with the setting for a memorable experience. We’re thrilled that you mentioned how much you like the Manta Ray Super Slide and Pool area. Guests of all ages enjoy the 14,100 square feet of water recreation space including the lave slide you mentioned. We’re looking forward to your next visit. Ahuihou!

The Sheraton is beautiful, elegant, with sweeping views of the ocean and of Kona and the volcano. The landscaping is gorgeous and incorporates the black lava rocks as if it were all natural. The pools are huge and refreshing, the Link for computers was efficient.

They said they had recently rennovated. Not sure if it was all rooms or what it was like before, but our room was an Ocean View room, and while the bed and pillows were wonderfully comfortable, the cleanliness of the carpet and bathroom seemed like it could have been better. The lanai and the A/c gave us choices for air and temp, so that was comfortable. Our "ocean view" was pretty much blocked by the spreading top of a palm tree, though we decided not to make a complaint because we could see parts of the ocean around it, and were entertained by all the birds that came to the tree.

We found the housekeeping staff to be very friendly, also there were certain waiters and folks in the concierge/activities area that were really nice. We had two bus drivers that were fantastic-- Dean, at Roberts Trans who did our Circle Island Tour, and Lloyd, who drove the shuttle and plays the ukulele. They were both warm, knowledgeable, Island natives, and made us feel like Ohana. The front desk seemed to always be backed up, with no greeting or "be with you in a minute" kind of comment. We tried to chalk it up to this slowness of Island time, lingering over chats, etc-- but the desk should be professional, move efficiently, and they are the first welcome and smile we should have gotten.

We enjoyed the use of the pool, and rented a cabana one day, though eventually the sun came around to the open end of it and we couldn't use it in direct sun so we lost half the day. Lunches and drinks at Holua and the service with those seemed fine-- though pretty expensive for pub food. We had one breakfast at Ainakai-- they talked us into the buffet, and although there was a nice variety of food, it was all cold. We didn't eat half of it, and we complained to the waitress, who said she would "tell her manager". I would think they might not charge us so much ($20 each for the buffet) seeing that we couldn't eat it. We didn't go back there for breakfast-- got coffees and rolls mostly at the coffee shop by the Link.

We had dinner once at Ray's. Again we ran into less than professdional or friendly folks at the desk. We had reservations, and came early to sit in the bar-- they said to come back to the desk at our reservation time. We did that, and there was a long line, so we waited by the desk as requested, and were ignored, truly-- not even asking why we were there, or "we'll just be a minute". Nobody said anything, and it was very uncomfortable. The ladies at the desk seemed to be in constant argument with each other and really not friendly or accomodating with anyone-- which made for a grouchy line. About a half hour after our reserved time a gal came and said to follow her-- not hello or welcome or sorry for the wait. Our dinner was good, but cost an arm and a leg and although we were next to the rail and could look at the manta ray divers, the ambience was just kind of stressful. No Ohana there....

The Sheraton was pretty empty-- empty pools, empty lounges... we assume that business is hurting, and that staff is reduced accordingly. Also, they run the restaurants consecutively-- Ainakai for breakfast till 11, Holua for lunch 11-5, then Ray's for dinner-- so each meal only has one choice, and the resort is really isolated out there. We didn't rent a car, because they said the trolley was included in the $20/day resort fee. So we ended up eating snacks that we bought from the little store at huge prices, and then at better prices from farmers market and ABC.

In the end, we mostly loved our vacation, the Sheraton is so beautiful and there are many beautiful and peaceful places there to walk or watch a sunset. Our favorite memories there are the LUAU-- best EVER!, the little birds visiting our lanai, the wild kitties down below, a little hammock time, convenient computer Link, good coffee and baked goods at the coffee shop, great MaiTais everywhere, young Brittany who took care of us several times at Holua, and our comfy bed. It was just hard to go through the week and realize that we didn't have many or great choices for meals at the resort, our bathroom wasn't really being cleaned well (though we tipped housekeeping every day) and it seemed like there was so little focus on being friendly and welcoming-- even at the end when we checked out, there was no thanks for coming or anything like that. We dropped $2000 - $3000 right there (7 days and nights) at the Sheraton between accomodations, resort fees, meals and a couple of souvenirs, plus luau. That may be small petty cash to some but for us it is a fortune, and we tipped generously (we have a big heart for the lower paid workers! Been there done that). My husband talks about moving there because he had such a bond with the bus driver-- and we were only on the bus a few times. There really was nobody at the Sheraton that welcomed us in a way that expresses any tone of Ohana, in the way the islanders convey it. We ate and had beverages on 4 occasions at the Kona Inn Restaurant downtown-- by the third time they recognized us and welcomed us as Ohana. Wish we'd had that at the Sheraton.

We stayed at Sheraton for 3 nights Dec 21—24 and it was a lovely experience…huge room with a stunning mountain view … we had our breakfast and dinner at the balcony. The beds were comfy, other furniture classy, several power points for easy use… the bath tub was chipped on the outside and an eyesore but we covered it with the shower curtain… liked the convenience of separate vanity area… appreciated the huge wardrobe. Best part was the area was a good 5 degree cooler than Kona area… we found the sun too hot on the kona side and entering the hotel grounds in the evening was a relief. We religiously watched out for manta rays on the 1st 2 evenings along with a huge crowd in the bar area and divers, snorkelers shining light in the ocean but it was a no show. On our last evening, we decided we’ll put in ½ hour but had no hopes but to our delight 2 mantas showed up and were dancing around quite early… by 7.30… there were just a handful of people….the mantas were the high point!!

there was just a small pool with a water fall on our side... so totally forgot to look for their famed water slides... regret it

Loved the décor of the lobby and other public areas… with the ocean motif recurring.. at the checkin, they don’t have enough leis for men, so felt a little short changed when we saw another group had all the members lei’d! the reception gave us an extra lady lei to compensate!!

Aloha! It was such a pleasure to have you stay with us for several days leading up to Christmas. We’re delighted you liked your accommodations and found the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper bed in your room to be so comfortable. The manta rays, the largest of the ray species, are a special sight to behold. These beautiful creatures can be seen from a special viewing area near Rays on the Bay and we are thrilled that on your last evening you had a chance to see them. Please accept our apologies with regard to the lei; we regret that there were no more available. Please come back and see us again soon. Mahalo!

We stayed at this resort for 4 days at the end of December. We had a spectacular oceanfront room and had the opportunity to catch some manta rays playing right from our balcony.
Overall, service at this resort was pretty good.
The pools were nice and never felt crowded. Beware there is no actual beach to get into the water - its all rocks.
The only downside we experienced was with the wireless internet which is included with the resort fees. We tried all 4 of our wireless devices and had trouble either getting on or staying on. The front desk or support was not able to make it any better and blamed it on the devices which worked fine at the next hotel.

Room Tip: Ocean room views are exceptional.

Mahalo for your review. We’re pleased that your stay with us was enjoyed and the sight of the manta rays from your balcony was appreciated. The mantas are wonderful to watch as they glide effortlessly through the waters. We just returned from a great stay at the Sheraton Kona Resort. The resort was beautiful, very well kept and had gorgeous grounds. The pool area was very fun with a multi-story waterslide, 2 hot tubs, beach area and splash grounds. It also had another little slide and pool area attached that went to the other area of the hotel. The pool was located right on a cliff overlooking the ocean and the view was spectacular.

We were very impressed with the friendly staff, especially Walter at the pool. He was always smiling and friendly and gave great tips to win the waterslide races.

The rooms are a little older, but very well kept up and clean. We were up on the top 7th floor and our view from the front or back of the room was so great.

This hotel really worked out well with kids (ages 6 & 9). The pool, kids room with ping pong, pool and foosball, the hawaiian ice shop, basketball and volleyball courts and daily activites made it a relaxing yet active place to be.

We did not eat at the restaurants, except by the pool. The food was very good and not too expensive. The drinks were a little pricey at $10/drink for a mixed drink. Service was very quick and friendly.

The hotel is a little out of town, which was fine with us. We had a rental car so we could choose to be in town where it was busy or out of town. There is a nice shopping center with groceries and a few restaurants right nearby. Each room has a refrigerator, so we got some groceries and ate breakfast in our room and kept water in the fridge. That was a nice and frugal convenience.

Looking forward to going again someday!

Room Tip: Our room was a mountain view but it had a great view of the marina. So we still had a water view, b...

I have stayed at lots of hotel rooms over the years and this combination of spacious comfortable rooms, unbeatable location, friendly gracious and accommodating staff are a real treat. We spent one day here while waiting for our vacation rental, and have to say it was one of the finest days I have ever spent. Lunch and a cocktail poolside; settling into a large comfy room with spacious lanai over-looking gardens, tennis courts and ocean; beautifully landscaped and designed; fabulous luxurious bedding; ending with viewing Giant Manta Rays at the open-air dining room/cocktail lounge "Rays on the Bay" and followed by a great dinner. Thank you for a truly wonderful vacation memory and one that was the highlight of our 10th anniversary holiday.
