My husband and I were on our honeymoon and decided to take surf lessons. This was one of two places I had scouted on the internet, and I'm glad I chose this place.
On our first visit to the shop, we decided to rent snorkeling gear ($8 for 3-4hrs) and explore the snorkel/surf spot located directly across the street from the shop (VERY convenient); we also signed up for surf lessons for the next morning.
I am kind of an experienced surfer; however, I had not been surfing in over 2 years after permanently moving to Germany. I decided to take the lesson so I could be with my husband, and to hopefully improve my deteriorating surfing skills (was never really good to begin with)... My husband was brand new to the sport.
Our instructor, Ben, was very friendly and patient... He clearly, and with plenty of humor, took us (4 learners total) through the steps of beginner surfing... And then he took us out to the point... Ben sent the Swiss couple off first... They stood up on their first wave... Then he sent my husband off... He stood up on his first wave... I was amazed and very excited... Then he sent me on my first wave... I fell off.
Ben realized that I was over-thinking it; and although I was an experienced surfer, I had never taken lessons or received any useful criticism before... Ben took the time to explain what I was doing wrong, and it only took a few minutes to correct years of bad habit.
This was one of the best experiences of our honeymoon... We wouldn't mind taking another lesson from Ben, and we will certainly rent boards from them whenever we visit the Big Island.
