“Superb resort. Extremely friendly staff, great location, very happy here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

We stayed 8 nights and every one of them was enjoyable. The staff was very friendly, courteous, helpful and attentive. They did offer generous discounts on activities scheduled through them at the office in trade for attending a timeshare presentation, however there was no pressure to attend and little pressure to purchase. The discounts were more than worth the couple of hours. We saved $426 off of 3 activities! The activities folks at the front desk were extremely knowledgeable of the area and things to do and recommended the best companies to work with, all of which were exceptional. Shawn especially in the office was a joy to talk with, he gave us numerous ideas of things to see and do and he seemed to know what we would like before we knew it ourselves! There are 8 individual pools around the resort, with codes to enter, so you could find privacy or people as your mood suited you. The maintenance and housekeeping staff has been extremely pleasant , friendly and welcoming. It had been our pleasure to stay here.

Found this place through Hotwire, had never heard of it. We were very pleasantly surprised. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. My husband and I were very ill and were transferring unexpectedly from another place. They let us check in 5 hours early and it was much appreciated. The room was immaculate and very comfortable. We were able to rent boogie boards once we were feeling better. The only thing lacking was an ocean view!

Excellent place for a family. We rented a two bedroom condo so there was lots of room for five of us.This place has full Kitchen (with pots, pans, utensils, etc), swimming pool, Tennis court, and friendly staff.

Aloha. Everything other members have said about Holua Resort is true! Myself and 3 friends spent a week here and loved everything about this beautiful place. Couldn't fault a thing. The accommodation is lovely and comfortable. Having a washer and dryer is a real help. The gardens are well maintained with some fantastic shrubs and trees, every unit has a close swimming pool and spa pool. Undercover parking keeps your car cool. Every staff member I met so so smiling, friendly and helpful, there was always someone getting around in the golf buggies. Housekeeping staff kept us well supplied with fresh towels and anything else we required. On Tuesday evening entertainment and food is put on for the guests. Kind of like a luau. The young people dancing and entertaining were wonderful! Big shopping centre close by with lots of shops, restaurants and cinemas. Craft markets just down the road on Wednesday morning. Unless you are just coming to the resort to relax and not sightsee you need a car as it's a way out of Kona. There is so much to see and do on this island a car is a must. We'll definitely be back and highly recommend this resort to everyone. Mahalo.

I stayed here for a few days in December because there were things I wanted to see and do in the southern half of the island before heading north to Hapuna Beach / Mauna Kea. I picked Holua Resort because of its great price and location. One unique aspect of this resort is that you CANNOT drive your car up to your unit -- there is a large underground parking garage near the main office, and a staff member drives you in a golf cart to your unit. It's not a long walk to any unit unless you are trying to drag luggage or beach gear. There are pros and cons to that arrangement -- it is nice because the grounds are not chopped up by roads and car traffic, but there is an obvious convenience factor to consider, particularly if you don't walk so well anymore.

The grounds are nicely planted and pleasant, but the units are rather close together, and most of the balconies face the other buildings -- if your neighbors are out, you will know it. One side of a few of the buildings look out over the adjoining golf course, and a couple even have distant ocean views, but there are very few of these. Make sure you ask for and are guaranteed one of these if you really want that. The buildings are multi-unit octagonal structures with a small central court, a nice layout. But the buildings are older and wood frame, not brick / concrete, so noise from your neighbors can be an issue. They are nicely kept up on the outside, but all of the a/c units are located right along the building's wall on the ground floor rather than away from the building as they are in more modern developments. If you are on the ground floor, as I was, this is a noisy arrangement, particularly at night -- you listen to everyone else's a/c firing up. Don't even bother sitting on the lanai.

The living areas have recently been redecorated in bright, tropical colors (the designer must have been very brave!), but the kitchens are badly dated, although very functional galley style. The cupboards are kind of gross, the countertops are 4x4 white ceramic tiles with discolored grout in places. The appliances were certainly newer, but white rather than the stainless or black you might expect in a more upscale resort, and you could see that someone had taken a sawz-all to hack through the countertop to fit the new stove in -- not a very professional installation. The kitchen worked just fine and was reasonably clean, but no one would call it upscale -- more like what you would have in your rental unit. Bathrooms were fine, but again nothing special.

There is no beach access here. There are several small pools and hot tubs scattered around the property, about the size of a large backyard pool, and I never found them very busy. The biggest activity at this resort appears to be tennis -- there were at least 12 courts, not heavily used, so if tennis is your thing, this is the place for you. And there is a very nice golf course right next door.

In summary, this was a pleasant, inexpensive place to stay, but I would not rush back here. I certainly would never stay more than a few days, using it as a layover between other stops.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor room with either a golf course or distant ocean few. Higher floors have less...

The condos themselves are in need of work. We had the two bedroom unit. The kitchen is very old; untensils, cookware, etc. worked but could do with some replacement and upgrade. The bathroom shower enclosure was falling apart in the master bedroom; you really had to push to close the door. We were hoping to check in early and although we did not expect a noon check in, thought 2pm would be reasonable. We were told that we would probably be accomodated and then upon querying the front desk later in the day, were told to stop asking and that to come back at 4pm. It would have been nice to just be told about the 4pm in the first place; why crush someone's hopes? There was also an attempt to try to get you to listen to a time share conversation with the promise of discounts at local restaurants and attractions, but we were not interested.

We were asked if we would like a suite with 2 kings or a king and 2 twins. We preferred the 2 kings only to find a suite with 2 twins. Again, why even ask if you had no intention of meeting the request. The linens was ok -- the mattress in the king room was old and should be replaced (lots of jiggle room). The twin beds were in good shape. There were plenty of towels and the units were kept quite clean.

The location is also very good. We liked the proximity to the airport as well as to grocery stores and restaurants. The closest beach is a bit of a disappointment though. It is a ways down the road, but parking is difficult and the beach was not very big. The marina is down the road (within walking distance) and also an area where you can take a dip. I saw some snorkellers there and from shore we did see fish and a turtle in the marina.

The parking was indeed underground or above depending on your preference. It was nice to be underground given the heat of the day. The pools were plentiful and the water was nice. The pools were however also in need of some repair -- the paint at the bottom of the pools had peeled away and the surfaces could do with some aesthetic work. There were not a large number of users for the pools so seating was not a problem.

On our last night, there was a "king" spider (about the size of a side plate) in the upstairs. Luckily one of the members of our party was not afraid of giant spiders and disposed of the visitor. We asked at the front desk about the pest and were told that the property had just been sprayed for the pests and that it was not uncommon for the giant spiders to appear after a spraying. I guess it is comforting that they spray but still very alarming that we saw one.

A very relaxing and friendly place to stay. The staff are all very friendly. The resort is beautifully landscaped and maintained. Covered parking is available which is a nice break from a scorching hot vehicle. The pools are small but there are a lot of them so that they are located close to the units. There is no parking at the individual units but they will cart your luggage from the parking area to your room on a golf cart. We stayed in a 1 bedroom unit and it was very comfortable and spacious. It also has 1 1/2 baths which was handy. We can't wait to come back.
