“Do not book phase 1”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2006

I have written to Shell Vacations Club regarding phase 1 of this property. We arrived late in the evening to smell a heavy odor of mold (room 5-101). It looked about 25 years old, the sofa was soiled, everything was dated and rusty. We asked to go to Holua Resort just down the road and it was great! Beware of Phase 1 !!! Kona Coast Resort Phase 2 is gorgeous, but it didn't help us!

The Kona Coast condo 7106 was a great place to have a family reunion of sorts. My husband and I took our daughter, my mom, and a cousin of my daughters. The condo is HUGE, so we were not stepping all over each other. It was great having three bathrooms and a big kitchen with everything we needed to prepare meals. (The kids even made smoothies with a blender that was there after we visited the farmer's market) We also found the price very, very reasonable. The condo was clean and convenient to a great snorkeling site. Also my husband ran the Kona marathon - which started and ended right down the street! It was a great vacation.

We stayed from May 28th through June 4th 2006 and it was beautiful. Very clean and the condo was absolutely beautiful. Our condo was right on the golf course and very close to the main pool and restaurant. The sunsets were awesome because you were able to walk a short distance across the golf course to the water. I would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat! We stayed in building 19.

Kona Coast Resort is a clean, secure, and quiet condo environment will lush tropical vegetation and birds and geckos. The entire resort is a class act. The unit was clean and very nicely appointed. The owners left ample instructions as to how to use the appliances -- we did not have to check with them or anyone else for help. Furniture and appointments were high quality and well distributed throughout the unit. We used the pool and tennis courts right next door and they too were in very well kept condition. Pleasant surprises were the availability of high speed wireless internet (aibeit at a price of $10/day), and one of the Big Island's best snorkeling spots about 1/2 mile up the road.

In short, the price was right when we booked over the internet, and the actual experience was much better that expected. We had a very nice, relaxing vacation time in unit 7106.

This was our second time staying in Kona Coast Resort. After traveling around the island and staying in bed and breakfasts, it was so nice to have a beautiful large condo all to
ourselves for six nights. We had a great stay. The sunsets were absolutely gorgeous and the snorkeling just a mile north was the best ever.

I was really surprised by how great our condo experience was in unit 7106 at the Kona Coast Resort. Usually, I enjoy a luxury hotel experience, but this unit had everything we needed to enjoy the island. It was also a good value because we shared the cost with two other couples. It was a big unit, with plenty of privacy for each couple. The property was nice, with pools and tennis. The island is my favorite of the Hawaiian chain.

We were in a 2nd story, one bedroom/two bath unit, in building 20. Check-in was smooth and the front desk was very helpful. The condo was very clean and nicely decorated. I know the units are in the mist of remodeling and this unit has the new stuff. It was all tastefully decorated in a tropical motif but in muted tones. All furnishing was in very good condition. The living room couch and chair were very comfortable, as was the lani furniture. The bed was not too soft, the only complaint here, the sheets were a bit scratchy, but my husband didn’t seem to mind. The Master Bath has a big glassed in shower as did the 2nd bath (no tub in either, which wasn’t a problem for us). The kitchen (w/dishwasher, Cascade, liquid soap, coffeemaker/filters/packets of sugar/one pkg of coffee) was well appointed with dinnerware and cookware to make simple breakfast/dinners. The laundry room had a stackable washer and dryer and was a bit loud when running. We just ran it when we were going to be out of the condo. While we were there, they were installing wireless services in the units. We didn’t bring any of these devices with us so don’t know if it was completed, but I’m sure it should be finished by now. We made it a point to throw out the trash each day so we had no problems with bugs during our stay. Not sure if that was due to the spraying or due to the numerous geckos we saw.

We didn’t use any of the services at the resort as we were out and about a lot. We did spend one afternoon by the pool and it was very nice, with lots of lounge chairs. There is also a resturant/bar near the big pool. We didn't eat there but did order drinks for by the pool. Yes, the water was a bit cool in the pool, but probably no cooler then the ocean. The front desk did give us a list of activities that they had going and all seem fun, if you happen to be around to enjoy them (hula classes, basket and lei making classes, etc). All of the bbqs seemed to be in decent shape, however, we did run across one that the prior person didn’t clean after they use it. Not the resort fault, just a person with no consideration for others.

Building 20 patio overlooks a grassy area and then a small parking lot for the resort but it’s situated as such as you can see the ocean between two of the other buildings. All in all, I didn’t mind how the location was. Heck, you’re in Hawaii…..certainly beats being at work.

The fact that there is a grocery store just up the road is great. Along with a Longs Drug store, you can get just about anything you need or forgotten at home. Also there is a really good sushi restaurant in that shopping mall
We would definately make it back to Kona and would not hesitate to book this resort again.
