“Not as nice as our Marriott timeshare, but good.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

I wish I could give this resort 3 1/2 stars, but I gave it 4 because it's better than "average", but not really "very good". Our experience at the Kona Coast was good, but we have been quite "spoiled" with our Marriott vacation condo stays elsewhere. However, there is no Marriott condo property on the Big Island, so we exchanged into this place. We requested a higher-up villa, and they got us one quickly on the third floor of building 15. Very friendly greeting and front desk staff. I hated the fact that you had to choose to have a.c. turned on for an extra $11 a day. My husband wanted to leave it off and have the tradewinds blow through our villa, but when we got into it, it was sweltering and so we went back and asked them to add it on to our bill. They then gave us a key to turn it on. But it was a little bone of contention between my hubby and me for the first few days, which is silly. They should just include it.

The bed was very lumpy and squeaky and the sheets were heavy and not very comfortable. Marriott's beds are so wonderful, so we were a little disappointed. The couches were not comfortable, and a couple of light bulbs were burned out. The maintenance guy came quickly, however, when we called. The bathrooms were large, shower dated and lighting faulty. One flat screen TV in the living area, older TVs in the bedrooms, but they worked fine. The condo itself was huge and well maintained with a large balcony overlooking the golf course and a view of the sunset from the front entrance railing. The grounds are lovely. This is NOT an oceanfront property! Only 2 small pools and no good nearby beaches, so if you want the beach, don't choose this. We went at a time when few children were there, and I can't imagine how crowded the pools would be at other times. Quite small. 3 decent hot tubs.
The kitchen appliances were all nice except for the 20 year old oven, which worked ok but was substandard compared to Marriott condos. Plenty of cooking pots and pans and dishes, etc.

The resort is located far enough away from the main dining/entertainment district of Kailua/Kona that you must have a car. You can't walk to many restaurants. We cooked in mostly, and did not eat at the resort restaurant. Parking was a nightmare when we did go to Bubba Gumps and the main drag. Having never visited the Big Island, we drove out every day to explore, putting over 1000 miles on our rental car over 9 days! We loved our vacation there, and the Kona Coast is a fine choice for a home base if you want to do what we did. But if you are looking for a more relaxed, pool/beach/tanning/eating out vacation, don't choose it.
Tip-DO snorkel the waters off the west coast. We went on a snorkel trip and then took our gear 2 other times to snorkel at the "Place of Refuge" and Mauna Kea beach. We swam with spinner dolphins, sea turtles, eels, and tons of colorful fish. Clear water, easy to navigate and wonderful. We are scuba divers, and the snorkeling here is almost as good or even better than many of our scuba dives elsewhere!

The resort was nice and the staff friendly but it wasn't what I expected. I've stayed at the Marriott Kauai Beach Club in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii and this is the type of resort I expect when I see the Interval Internal Premier Resort symbol.

I saw a recent post that said the restaurant and pool are too close and the food was terrible. I would have to agree with restaurant sitting in the pool or so it felt. I was more 50/50 on the food.

The pool is too small for the size of the resort and they need to clean more often. There were ants every where by late afternoon from people eating in lounge chairs.

I also used this a base to explore the rest of the island. I had a car and did a great deal on my own but also booked a few trips. Don't use the concierge to book trips - you will spend half your time in line and then they may book the wrong trip for you. I listened to the presentations and booked over half my trips on my own. Much better success booking on my own

Go, enjoy but don't expect Premier Resort.

This is a resort style condo and is very spacious. The staff was amazing and very accommodating. We brought our 7 month old baby and it was ideal with the amount of space, amenities, the special events they offered, the location and more. We were very close to the main beaches in the area, minutes from the main drag, a grocery store, pharmacy, and a local market.
We did have a car mainly for convenience. I would recommend this hotel and also the drive to kona! What a view.....

Stayed two weeks at the Kona Coast Resort and had a wonderful time. The units are large and well suited for families. We were able to cook wonderful dinners using the facilities and utensils provided in the unit. The grounds are beautiful and we enjoyed the sunset every night from our patio overlooking the golf course.

Room Tip: Any room along the golf course is good.

The resort is cool. Very private which we loved..the employees are chill. They dont bother!! The 1bdrm we was in was cherry!! Had everything we needed to enjoy our stay..we got a ground level unit which was awesome!! Bbq grills are everywhere which we used twice..family came to visit for the day & they had a blast!! No problems..so i say it was worth every penny!! It was a vacay for my girlfriends birthday & she had a blast:)!! On the downside the splash pool & jacuzzi had dead roaches floating around..which i thought was gross & parking sucked!! Had to search for parking everynight!! I even had to park a building down from ours!! Other then that its been a awesome experience!! Looking forward to staying again!! Aloha from 96743!!

We stayed for a week at the Kona Coast Resort. It turned out to be a perfect spot for our trip. The resort itself was very special with lots of amenities - great pools and activities - beautiful views and wonderful people at the resort to make you feel welcome. Our room was huge with a large balcony. The concierge desk was very knowledgeable and gave lots of ideas. The bar and restaurant were great places to relax. There is tennis and volleyball and pool/beach rentals, barbeque grills and great walking. It proved to be a great location for snorkeling - best within walking distance on the whole island. There are boat tours, also within walking distance, that take you to the Captain Cook monument for snorkeling and more. There are restaurants, a grocery store, and movie theaters just across the street - again within walking distance. We were very pleased with the Kona Coast Resort and if we went to the Big Island again, we would certainly stay there.

Best resort close to town. very spacious. About 6 miles South of town, on the country club golf course with views of ocean from some buildings. Upgraded furnishings a few years back, with tile floors and bath, walk in shower in guest bath and master bath suite, large lanai, beautifully carved wood furniture. Has lots of amenities including 3 jacuzzis, 2 pools (one adult only), kids jungle jims and playground, gazebo, restaurant/bar at the pool, locker rooms, sauna, on sight tour agents, on sight water toy rentals and store, views of the ocean across the golf course and a walking trail around the complex. Entertainment at the bar almost nightly, with daily drink and food specials. Across the street from one of two major shopping centers in town with movie theatre. Except for the 4 Seasons, it can't be beat for the buck. I know. I live in Kona. Town is a kick. Lots to do in area.

Room Tip: Phase 2, buildings 15-19 face the golf course. Building 23-26 have full ocean view. Corner units a...
