“manta ray night snorkle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

We went on the night snorkle and it was amazing.... However we took the charter with Neptune Charlies and we were very disapointed with them. They didnt leave until after 6pm and we were back at the dock by 8pm. The internet said 3 1/2 hours but it was only 2. The captain was nice the staff was nice but they didn't cater to the 20+ people on the ship. it felt like we were just there.
In the water the crew guy holding our little raft kept us away from all the lights and the other people. Luckily he had to swim back with a person to the boat and my hubby pulled our whole little raft over to the crowd and we finally got to see the rays.
They gave us only about 25-30 mins in the water and the rays didnt come out until about 5-10 minutes before we left. So we missed most of the show. Of the 20+ boats out there we were the last there and first to leave...
This snorkle is AMAZING everyone should do it!!!! But check for a better ship.
ALSO. Check to see if someone is filming. Ocean wings Hawaii filmed for us and we told her we wanted to buy the video and she made sure to get us in the pics and video. It was a 60$ video and is worth every penny. She is independant and works with all the boats so ask for them!!!

“Awesome Excursion!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

My wife and I had a great time today whale watching. Captain Glen and his Firstmate Tim really know their stuff! The whales were impressive and the spinner dolphins were amazing! We also were privileged to see some very rare false killer whales playing with the first group of whales. Totally awesome!!! Thanks for a memorable experience!

“Very Cool!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

My husband and I have been to the Big Island many times and had done just about all we thought we could do until we found this. This adventure was amazing! Saw about 8 different manta rays the night we went out. What beautiful and calm creatures they are! They seemed to be flying underneath us. The crew was wonderful, very attentive, explained everything thoroughly and ensured we all had a great experience. We'd recommend this tour company. We would definitely do this again, hopefully with our kids next time. They would love it too!

“Of all things to do ... do this one!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Okay, I have done about all of the touristy things there are to do on the Big Island (paniolo horse back riding, snorkel boat to capt. cook, flume the ditch, para-sail, whale watching on a zodiak, etc,) and this BY FAR is the one that will stick with me as a true bucket list item. There is NOTHING like it.
Everything they tell you about it is absolutely true. There will be a lot of GIANT rays and they are really as big as they tell you. There were about 15-20 when we went there. They really do come up right under your surf board to get the plankton that gather there and they do multiple back flips to get it all. One of our rays must have done 8-10 flips. They really are only inches away from you. They really are magnificent and beautiful creatures, as graceful as dancers in their constant search for food.
Overall the experience is surreal. The pitch dark of the night water is pierced by shafts of artificial underwater lights illuminating the hoards of plankton. Glittering silvery fish dart amongst the pillars of light and deep below search lights from the divers seek out the mantas as they roam from bottom to top on fluttering wings.
People scream, moan, and just stay in quiet awe ... everyone overwhelmed with the immense and graceful creatures who are so calm under observation.
if you do anything, do this!
I cannot vouch for any one tour being better than others. Ours was great, I am sure others are too. It probably does not matter which tour you take, just do it!

“Airport vs. Sheraton”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

Do your research before you choose a company to go out with. Apparently there are 2 locations boats go to see these amazing creatures by night. Up north by the airport and out in front of the Sheraton Hotel. We did the Sheraton location and saw only 1 manta ray... After 45min of teeth-chattering, floating in the water, waiting for something to happen. Apparently the location by the airport gets at least 8-12 every night. Make sure you choose a company going to the airport location, otherwise it won't be as amazing as everyone says this experience is. Also make sure the company you choose provides FULL BODY wetsuits, not the short-sleaved summer suits. You are not actually swimming in the water, you are just floating on the surface and watching the well-lit water below... So, it gets very cold. Also, VIDEO cameras capture the moment better than still cameras. You can rent underwater cameras from "Boss Frog"-type shops.
