“Take your time and get a feel for the Island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

We loved driving the Mamalahoa Highway. So much diversity as you drive the curves and dips around the Big island. One minute an unexpected rain storm, the next minute sheep being herded along the highway. Lots of reasons to pull off and enjoy the sights: coffee plantations, good restaurant finds, gorgeous beaches and charming little towns make for a perfect day, a perfect drive. Don't hurry, take your time and enjoy the spontaneity!

“What do you say?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

Mamalahoa Highway is a road going most the way around the Big Island. You can take Old Mamalahoa or the "new" Mamalahoa. Some times it runs through town, some times through rain forest and some times through high desert. Bottom line: it's a road.

“a pretty drive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

if you are not in a hurry well worth the drive thru coffee country. Slow going because of the curves but that's good, it gives you a chance to get the feel of old Hawaii

“A cooler Beautiful Drive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

I love driving on Mamalahoa Highway any chance I get... during the day. This is the upper road from Kona to Waimea on the Island of Hawaii. The views are great. The temperature is about 15 degrees cooler than the low road, Queen Kaahumanu. It is also the Hawaii Belt Road which runs all the way around the island. The drive is approximately all day long. Plan on 8-12 hours depending on how many stops you choose to make. Even though Hawaii is only the 76th largest island on the planet it is more than twice the size of all the other Hawaiian islands put together. Do the drive. You will love it.

“Mixed experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

It is not the road but the weather conditions. First experience was driving from Kona to Waimea. It was a clear day, great views both up the slope towards the volcano as well as seen the lava track to the ocean. ideal experience.
The next trip a few days later was from Waimea to Kona. The conditions were horrendous. Thick fog (they call it vog as it is a mixture of volcano plume sulpher, mosture and air) was mixed with torrential rain. The rain is like what you see in a car wash. Visibilty was about 50 - 60 feet. Drivers slowed; most had their headlights on. It was not an easy drive but people were smart and slowed given the conditions. So beware.
