Do this even if you are not much "into" astronomy. It's fascinating. I do it every year. There are 2 companies and both are good.

“It really was amazing...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

To be able to just drive up was fantastic. Budget had a walk up special for fastbreak members for 72/day for a 4x4 Jeep which is required. The main roads to Kea were windy but smooth, just take it easy going up past the Visitors Center and back for no problems. It was 25 degrees when we were at the summit so be ready for that plus heavy wind.

“Could have been great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

Well this was a must do for the other half because he wanted to see the stars. I was more interested in the sunset. We got to the visitor center where we had lasagna and what may have been one of the best brownies ever. We then went to the top. The view is amazing and the telescopes are "wow". Unfortunatly we were at the top for about 10 minutes and the fog took over. We didn't get to see the sunset :-( We waited a bit to see if things would clear up for us. We didn't have any luck, although we did get to see Jupiter and two of its moons between the cloud coverage. We ended up leaving shortly after. They did refund half the money which was nice of them, still a let down though, at no fault of the company though. I blame mother nautre for it..lol. If I go back to the Big Island I will be sure to do this again, I would say it's a must do for all.

“Incredible view, fun adventure!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

We had a great time driving to the top of Mauna Kea, with a 4 wheel drive jeep, (a must), we had to creep up the hill at a very slow pace, as wind pushed the car around a bit! Totally understandable why the signs all have holes in them (for wind to pass). We had to hang on to our car door as we got out at the top, for the wind would slam it open. It was an incredible view during the whole journey and well worth the trip!
