“The new & improved Saddle Road”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

It used to be scary to drive on parts of this road, but now--except for the fog that can appear--it is a very nice road with interesting sights along the way. Be sure to have enough gas and a good car though.

“this road was closed from Kona to about 15 miles from Mauna Loa.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

Hubby and I enjoyed this road from Hilo to Kona (stopping at Mauna Loa). The road was very nice and the views were lovely: you could see old volcanoes and the ocean the closer you get to Kona. Drive this during the day and not the night to catch the views!

“Beautiful Road for a short cut”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

The saddle road is in beautiful condition. It saves time going from Hilo to Kona. The elevation change with the vegetation difference is remarkable. Very nice for travel and to cut travel time in half or more compared to the alternate routes.

“Nice Change of Scenery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

We drove from Kona to Hilo one day, to snorkel on the 'colder' side of the island. The drive was quite nice, as it brought you from the dry coastal margins, up through an ever-changing environment including evergreens, over open green hills flanked with old lava flows and peaks, and then into a a foggy rain forest just outside of Hilo. From there we drove south to Volcano National Park and spent the rest of the day there before heading back to Kona. The Saddle Road was the best choice, for us, to get to the other side of the island. The road was well paved, and kind of roller-coater like in places.

“Bring dramamine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

We drove this several times to get to Mauna Kea and Hilo. The stretch from the Maumalahua Highway is very winding and hilly, so anyone prone to motion sickness may want to bring dramamine or other medicine. It is a nice strtch of road through ranches which are very scenic. The remainder is a fairly straight highway that runs to the outskirts of Hilo. The area by the turn for Mauna Kea is veru desolate, although we did see some herds of goats running over the lava rock. Beware the clouds/fog that you hit on occasion as the elevation changes and be sure to have a full tank of gas before you make the trip.
