“Easy route across the Island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Had to make a trip to Hilo and this is probably the fastest route. Will be glad when the new bypass is open. the fist leg of Saddle Road is too twisty and narrow, but absolutely, is the best way to get over to the other side if in a hurry and not looking for an exceptionally scenic route

“long road but preety”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

we opted to fly into Hilo and drive over to the west side of Hilo, one long drive but very pretty as it takes you through back country into Lava areas and then back through some rolling hills and pretty farm land

“The road is safe!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

If you have a old travel guide or friends that have visited Hawaii they will tell you not to travel on Saddle Road. THe road has been redone and paved. It is a fast and efficient way to get To hilo from Waikaloa or Kona. If you want to see things on your way to Hilo this is not the way to go. You will miss Waimea, Hamakua coast, Botanical Gardens and Akaka falls.

“Newly re-paved, very scentic.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

This is a very scenic drive. It made our 3hr trip from the southern point of the island around the east side and back to Kona seem like a short drive. We stopped many times to take lots of pictures and had some great food on the north end near Mauna Kea. We met a local during our trip who said the roads had been repaved and were nice now, and he was right. They were wonderfully smooth and enjoyable to travel on. Lots of different views along the way from ocean, to rainforest, to grasslands (farms), to mountains. Loved it.

“Amazing Landscape”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

It's the shortest way to Hilo from Kona and so beautiful. Hilo pails after this ride. The road is well paved and marked so is an easy drive with a landscape that is every changing. Worth the long drive and a must to get to the road up Mauna Kea.
