“An Intimate Inn on the Big Island”

This Inn is for the Traveler who wants the feeling of staying with Family during their stay on the Big island. Located up in an area called The Highlands where the elevation provides the guest with cooling breezes and easy access to town by car. The hosts are very accomodating and the accomodations are clean and comfortable. i had a prior stay that was so enjoyable, that I returned the following year for the Christmas holiday with my Mother and Grandmother whom enjoyed their stay immensely. This property is for the person who wants an intimate place to stay without the complications of staying at a large resort style property. I will not and do not hesitate to refer family and friends to stay at the Puukala, the true spirit that is the Big island of Hawaii.

“Rude, Mean and Nasty”

Pu'ukala Lodge

When we arrived at the Pu'ukala Lodge, really two cinder block basement rooms, we were told there had been a slight plumbing leak. We were shown the King Kameamea Suite which had a very strong chemical, cleaning solution smell. Acting in good faith, we opened up the windows and doors to try to make our reservation work. After less than an hour in the room, my eyes were stinging and I felt sick to my stomach from the smell. The most polite in our party went to find the owners to tell them we had a problem. The owners were told there was a problem with the room and that we couldn't stay as it was. Instead of responding with concern, the owners told us that if we didn't want to be on their property, we should leave. They told us to get out! Incredibly, they told us they were going to charge our credit card for our anticipated two nights stay.

The "Lodge" suites are nothing more than dark, basement rooms with little charm or hospitality. The owners were RUDE and MEAN. Do not stay here!!

We were assigned to the Kamehameha Suite. Until the problems in this suite are fixed, they should stop using this room. The biggest problem is the smell. Then they tried to cover the smell with an overpowering air "freshener." It was awful. The room is in a horrible location, too. First of all, it is a basement room, so the foot traffic in the house above is quite loud. Second, the "view" of the carport was not only an eyesore, but noisy and filled the room with gas fumes as people started their cars at all hours. Third, the late-night shreiks from drunken neighbors was the icing on the cake.

This place was described as having a high-ceilinged living room, which it does, but I was told by Ron that guests are only invited into the house for breakfast and the rest of the time it is off limits. We then thought we would enjoy the view from the lanai, but with two televisions from inside spilling their sound out, it was not exactly relaxing.

We did not find Ron to be very hospitable: this is a "bed-and-breakfast," so I didn't think it was out of line to ask if we could work something out on a day when we had to leave early and miss the breakfast hour. It was an open ended question. Ron was pretty adamant that no special arrangements would be made. However, when I posed the same question to Tom, he graciously put some cold cereal in our room and milk and fruit in the fridge.
