Just returned from our 6th trip to the Kona Village Resort, and it's still wonderful. Service is still outstanding, with a staff filled with the spirit of aloha. The food is still great, though with a new chef on the premises, is a little more variable as he updates the menus. The quantity is still outstanding.
The beach staff has upgraded all of their equipment, with kayaks with back rests for additional comfort. The luau show continues to be outstanding.
Kona Village is a unique place. You can park your car when you arrive, and never use it again until you leave. You walk from your hale to the beach, pool, tennis, massage, meals, etc. Most activities are complimentary, which means that you aren't being nickel-and-dimed on your vacation.
A honeymoon couple from San Francisco complained that KVR is not appropriate for honeymooners. Nothing could be further from the truth. Some hales are designed for families, and others are designed for couples without children. Honeymooners should seriously consider splurging on the Royal hales, which generally are much quieter. Many feature romantic private Jacuzzis on the lanai, which are a perfect way to start and/or end the day. (The honeymooners from SF stayed in the lowest priced hales, which frequently are used by families.) A call to the KVR reservations staff to discuss a hale selection would have probably helped here.
Kona Village is not for everybody. Some people need their phone, TV, and air conditioning. Some people want more variety in their dining, and some people want to see a lot more sights during their trip. In many respects, KVR is a retreat from the world - a place to get away from the rat race. People who want to go, go, go, see, see, see, do, do, do might not like it.
