Wow, what a view of the ocean. Each room is ocean front. Roomy and very clean. Our condo was ocean front. about 50 feet from the beach itself. Two huge bedroom with full baths, large living area, huge kitchen. All you have to bring is your culinary expertise. The balcony is wonderful at sunrise and sunset. Two swimming pools; one regular size and the other is and edgeless salt water pool. The pool's water comes from the lapping waves of the sea. If you are lucky, a fish or more wlll ride with the waves and land in the pool while you are swimming.
Friendly and helpful staff, about 8 min from downtown Kona.
Going back next year!

Room Tip: If you are a couple, Just get the one bed/bath condo. Very roomy. Has a pull out sofa bed just in ca...

I stayed at the Aston for a couple of nights this past summer with a total of 14 family members (including 6 kids) on our first ever family vacation. We had a total of 4 rooms. My husband and I had a 1-bedroom suite on the third floor with a partial ocean view, which was fine for us. We spent very little time in the room, but it was comfortable and had all the standard hotel amenities.

The suite was well stocked with everything one could possibly need on vacation, including a blender for drinks, toaster, rice cooker, a full set of dishes, pans, and silverware, a full kitchen with fridge, range, and freezer, and even a martini shaker.

Our small dining area had a table with seating for 4. The living room had a pull out couch and a couple of simple but comfortable chairs. Our patio was fairly small but again, we didn't mind because we spent most of our time exploring the island.

The pool was mostly empty during our entire stay and was really nice, large, and clean. We liked the outdoor hot tub raised above the pool, overlooking the ocean. The hotel has a small beach just the other side of the pool, but we didn't even spend any time there. On a sunny day, it would be a great place to relax underneath the palm trees and soak in the sun. Unfortunately, the beach looks like it was made for the hotel and is hemmed in with a rock wall. On the ocean side, it's all sharp volcanic rock, which might make for good snorkeling but again, we didn't try it. We headed to a couple of known snorkeling places that were calmer as well as better beaches for swimming.

The grounds were immaculate during our stay, and I loved the beautiful old trees on the property. We had 2 rental cars for our entire family and had no problem finding parking. The hotel is conveniently located right off Ali'i Drive in town and isn't far from several shopping options, including Costco. The gal at the front desk was friendly.

You'll probably want a rental car if you stay here since many of the beaches and best attractions are spread out. The Aston is about 20 minutes south of the Kona International Airport and is about 45 minutes south of my favorite beach, Manini'owali Beach. If most of your time will be spent in or around Mauna Kea and/or Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you might want to either book a hotel near Hilo instead or split your time in both Kona and Hilo, as we did. The Aston is on the opposite side of the island from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (roughly a 2 hour drive).

Overall, we had a nice stay at the Aston. Considering the price, it was a good value for Kona.

Elevator was out in our building, which meant a slog up to the 4th floor with whatever bundle we were carrying. Not so easy on the over 60-knees.

Worst part was the attitude of the staff: they did not alert us to the downed elevator before the trip and when we got there they basically said "Gotcha". No discount, no alternate room.

I might still have gone for two stars but the deterioration of the property and amenities from the previous year was marked:

- no restocked bathroom amenities (shampoo, soap)
- wash your own beach towels
- DVD dispenser broken
- one blow dryer for 2 bathrooms
- change stolen from the room by maids
- pool furniture worn and saggy

etc, etc..

It felt like they stopped trying about a year ago and really no longer cared what the rental experience was like.

We won't be staying there again.

Room Tip: Avoid the Aston

I booked this hotel through a Priceline express deal, and after reading all of the reviews I was looking forward to my stay. The hotel/condo is in a really good location on Ali'i drive, far enough away from town to be nice and quiet. The amenities are nice enough but nothing special. My main complaint is with the room. I can't speak for all rooms, but room 116 is terrible! It was dirty, the sheets on the pullout couch appeared to be dirty, and the couch itself was so uncomfortable that I ended up sleeping on a sun lounger on the lanai. I think the bed in the actual bedroom was ok, but the vent for that room was clogged up so we had to turn the air way down to make that room acceptably cool, so the folks in the bedroom were comfortable while the living room was an icebox. To top it all off, my view from my lanai just looked into reception. Overall, just very poor value for money, and I would not stay there again.

Our room was very comfortable with a spectacular ocean view. The restaurant is the hotel is exceptional, gourmet worthy. The pool and the beach provided endless hours of relaxation. We with our adult children in a separate room. It was both a great family spot and a romantic escape for us.

Excellent, spacious rooms with all the amenities. Within walking distance to Kona, and a white sand beach to relax, BBQ, swim or just enjoy the view. Dine on the lanai or at the many local eateries. Costco is close grocery shopping. Large pool, and very helpful staff. Security is tight but appreciated. Cards required for the pool and beach area. Delightful shopping and farmers markets close by. Renting a car will get you to historic sites, National Parks, and all the island sight seeing spots.

Room Tip: Almost all rooms have a view of the pool and the ocean, but if you want a full view of either be sur...

This hotel is right on the ocean. We booked a partial oceanview suite with a full kitchen and separate bed room. The rooms where large and very clean. You can really just sit back and relax in the room with the sites and sounds of the ocean. Most nights we slept in the living room sofa bed with the balcony glass door fully open to let the sound of the ocean waves put us to sleep. The staff was friendly and very receptive to our needs. They gave us the low down on where to eat, places to see and things to do. I grilled up a couple of steaks one of the grills in the court yard next to the pool and made a couple friends that were there for a wedding. I only wish that there was sand beach on this property. Althought the hotel is ocean front, its rocky and not a good place to swim.
