“Good Food, Excellent portions, Good price and hard to find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

Very tasty & good, try the Ox tail soup and the Oriental Chicken Salad. Those two are enough for two people. We were told about this place by large Hawaiin Trolley driver, the bigger they are the more good food places they know (-:
Setting is in a bowling alley with a quasi-archade, much nicer than the bowling alleys I knew when I was a kid. This would be a very good place to take kids and enjoy your meal why they do their thing.
I think this place is managed by the people that run Big Island Grill since the menu looks similiar. No other tourist were their while we were there, just locals. The trolley driver stated their breakfasts are even better, and so far all the places he recommended have been good; Chubbys, You make the roll Sushi, Big Island Grill, and several others.
To get there you need to go behind the plaza and up a slight incline. There is nothing to indicate the bowling alley, it is in Frame Ten Center, I guess that was for the ten pin bowling. Inside is Chubbys.
They have kids bowling, where the guard rail comes up so the ball does not drop into the gutter, guarenteed to hit atleast one pin.
Will go back again.

“Chubby's - Good food at a reasonable price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

Chubby's was recommended by a local for good food that is affordable. I had doubts when I was told that the restaurnt was located in a bowling alley but decided to try it anyways. The food was very good at a reasonable price. You order at the counter and then they deliver it to your table when it is ready. There is a variety of meals on the menu, I ordered the grilled fish with rice; the food was delicious. The staff makes rounds to make sure everything is ok after the food is delivered and offers free refills on soda. The atmosphere is a little noisy but keep in mind that you are in a bowling alley. I was surprised to receive free tokens for the game room when I purchased my meal. I would definitely return to this restaurant. It is a little difficult to locate so ask directions.

“Loco moco and bowling all day long”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012 via mobile

June 17th and subsequent visit for dinner. Flying into Kona Sunday nights limits your dining choices especially if you fly in late. Most of the establishments close around 9 or 10 pm. So you can go to Denny's I suppose or get some local flavor. We heard about chubbys through another restaurant Big Island Grill which operates Chubbys. Chubbys is located in a bowling alley behind a shopping center along Palani Road. You have to drive into the center and the go past the Longs Drugs and make a left into a long driveway towards a professional building. Adjacent to that building is a bowling alley. Chubbys is in the bowling alley! It's noisy but quite a uniquely Hawaiian experience. Lots of families there interested in eating good hearty local food. Portions are generous and prices are relatively inexpensive considering you are in Hawaii. I had kalbi or Korean BBQ ribs which were tender and delicious. The typical side orders were a large scoop of rice and macaroni salad. My wife had the oxtail soup where the oxtails were large and tender. Broth was delicious . One daughter had teriyaki chicken which was tender with a mildly sweet terriyaki sauce. My oldest daughter had the garlic shrimp special. Lots of big crispy shrimp with garlic pieces but not greasy at all. As they say in Hawaii this was Ono! Service consisted simply o delivering the food to our table. Plenty of seating. People including waiter and waitresses were very friendly. A noisy unique and delicious Hawaiian experience. Highly recommend.

“Good local food but difficult to locate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2012

We had a difficult time locating this restaurant at first. It was located inside the bowling alley and they don't have a signboard outside of the building. We shared a meal here because of the large portion. We had oxtail soup which includes a choice of white rice (you can either go with white or brown rice), mashed potato (optional) or a salad. The oxtail soup has some cabbage added to it instead of the regular onions and carrots. Because it is right inside a bowling alley, crying kids and noise might be a problem if you are noise-sensitive. Cashier was friendly but servers were not. If good food was your top priority, it's definitely worth a visit.
