“Perfect place to stay in Kona”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

The Big Island Retreat was such a great place to stay and Randy and his wife were great hosts. Very quiet and relaxing area that is set back from the main road, great location just south of downtown and right across the street from a nice beach that is awesome for snorkeling and sunsets. The room included tons of amenities such as cookware, coffee and fruit. We even cooked fish one night out in the bbq patio area

We would absolutely stay there again if we come back, it's a perfect place to enjoy and explore Kona. Thanks, Randy!

We were very pleased by Randy's hospitality and kindness. Everything in the room makes you feel at home (we stayed in the sea view room). It is very well equiped with brand new appliances. A complementary basket containing some delicious fruits, local teas as well as granola was placed for our arrival. We felt really welcome. The room was really clean too and tastefully decorated. The bed was as comfy as in a 4 star hotel. You can feel that the owners put their hearts in their b & b. We had a view of the ocean plus the sound, wonderful. The beach is at walking distance. Good snorkeling on one side, good surfing on the other. I highly recommend Big Island retreat.

This hidden gem on the big island of Hawaii is a beautiful, plantation-style oasis in paradise. Located on the hillside overlooking the ocean just 100 yards above a black sand beach ideal for snorkeling or catching the waves for surfing. All of the guest rooms are elegantly furnished with extremely comfortable four-poster, king-sized beds and all of the amenities one could possibly desire (private bath/shower & kitchen facilities of varying degrees) including private lanais where one can enjoy their morning coffee or a cocktail in the evening while watching the spectacular sunset. There is also a spacious common-area kitchen/BBQ gazebo available for all the guests to use which is fully equipped for any cooking/dining needs. The hosts, Randy & Shannon Hagel are an incredibly friendly, helpful and very accommodating couple that strive to provide an extremely satisfying experience. Their attention to detail is impeccable & they provide all the little touches that make you feel right at home. We enjoyed our stay immensely and would highly recommend the Big Island Retreat to anyone interested in finding a very affordable alternative to the big, expensive four-star resorts. We will most certainly return there ourselves as often as we can. W & J Carberry, Calgary, AB.

What a surprise when my wife and I found this unique inn 5 miles south of Kona when all the other condo properties were booked. That was ten years ago for our 40th anniv. We returned for our 45th anniv. And now for our 50th this year. It has been delightfully renovated by the new owners, Randy and Shannon Hagel. Each room, the size of of studio, is very clean uniquely decorated, and with new furniture and equipment. Across from the driveway is an openair gazebo with barbecue, stove top, refrigerator and full kitchen for sharing a meal time or preparing a meal to enjoy on your own lanai. All rooms are open air where the splash of the waves lulled to sleep every night.
Just a hundred yards from the ocean, directly across from the landmark St. Peter's Catholic Church, this hidden-away inn is just one more block from the best snorkeling beach on Big Island, because of a breakwater that calms the water, perfect for beginners. You simply have to put your face in the water with your goggles on to see all the fish you can imagine-and turtles.
Randy and Shannon went out of their way to make us feel at home. We enjoyed it so much we stayed three weeks! And we're not going to wait five years to go back..."We arrived as strangers and left as friends"

Room Tip: Every room is uniquely and beautifully decorated. We have stayed in 3 different rooms. They vary sli...

We spent 8 glorious days at Big Island Retreat and can't wait to go back.
Shannon and Randy made us feel welcome from the first moment we arrived. For the duration we were made to feel like their only guests and were treated like family stopping by for a visit. Shannon's excellent pick of a guide book, provided in each room, and local incite to hidden gems from Gigi made this first time visit unforgettable. The location cannot be beat. A picture perfect beach in walking distance, downtown Kona and several farmers markets just a short drive. Each night we were lulled to sleep with the rhythmic sounds of the surf. With a secluded view of the ocean from our balcony we felt like we staying in our own piece of heaven.

Linda and I late in writing this review because we had an extended stay at Hawaii and just recently returned. However, we cannot forget our stay at the Big Island Retreat. It was late on Monday, February 21, 2013. On the way from Hilo, we had driven to Kona from our tour to the top of the volcano. We were to be Randy and Shannon’s first guests at the Big Island Retreat and we were treated like family. We arrived around 10:30pm in the dark and Randy even walked down to the “main” road with a flashlight to make sure we turned at the right street. That was just the beginning of a wonderful experience.
When we arrived at our room and opened the door, we were greeted by a 4 poster, California king bed with pineapples carved into the wood. The room had a colorful accent wall, jalousie windows, gleaming white tile floor, a small refrigerator, a new coffee pot, a new table oven, an assortment of breakfast items, milk, yogurt, macadamia nuts, fluffy bathroom towels with a nice fragrance, and immediate access to our private lanai with a view of the ocean, the beach and the waves. That night, we drifted off to sleep listening to the waves gently rolling onto the beach. Randy and Shannon’s attention to detail was absolutely amazing. The next morning, I made coffee in the room and we relaxed on the lanai before going to our snorkel tour at the harbor.
All rooms in the main building open to a beautiful inner courtyard atrium. The Big Island Retreat has a large washer and dryer in an area off of the atrium on the first floor that you can use for a small fee. Randy and Shannon’s friend, Gigi, was also very helpful. We enjoyed our conversations. Gigi suggested we dine at the Kona Inn and it was delicious.
Now, I see several reviews on Trip Advisor from guests that stayed after us. I am not surprised to see that they received the same tender loving care that we received because Randy and Shannon cannot do it any other way but perfect with lots of Aloha. We hope to visit again next year.

Room Tip: Although only one room was finished when we stayed, we are confident that all rooms are equally as c...

This is without a doubt the best holiday our family has had. Big island retreat has all the amenities of home including the warmth and caring of the staff. The rooms are modern, clean and well appointed. The property is centrally located on the Kona coast. It is close to town yet miles away from noise and stress. The beach is a short easy walk away with some of the best snorkelling and surfing available. We cancelled our scuba diving because we saw it all snorkelling! Turtles, angel fish, coral reefs to name a few. A must visit...we will definitely go back
