The 29 Palms Inn is classic hi-desert dining. Set literally on the Oasis of Mara (you can feed the ducks at the pond), with produce grown in its own garden, there are few other restaurants in the Joshua Tree National Park area that can come close.
Their steaks are always very good, and frequently excellent (the ribeye I had this past Saturday was an example of the excellent variety), the sauteed mushrooms are delicious, and their house-made sourdough bread is superb.
Drinks at the Inn are refreshing, with some named for locals. Lunch is a good value, though they continue to remove my favorite items from the menu.
When it's not too hot or windy, dine out poolside. Keep your eyes peeled for Hollywood celebrities who come to the Inn to decompress and relax, and photo shoots for fashion magazines. Also, after sunset, watch for the owls who live in the palms!
There is almost always live music, Sunday brunch is very good, and many special events take place in the tent, so you never know what your evening will wind up turning into (our dinner this past weekend ended with a literature and poetry reading combined with an independent film screening in the tent - perfect!).
One thing - make reservations for dinner if at all possible. With so much going on, the Inn can fill up quickly.
