We booked to stay at the Pepi Gabl Chalet Hotel as part of an Espirit holiday. My wife and I came to snowboard and we brought our 2 & 1/2 year old son. So we needed good childcare facilities as he is still too small to learn to ski. The location for slope access is very good, being right next to the Nasserien lift. The drop off for the crèche is opposite the hotel and the main town is a 5-10 minute walk away. You are far enough away from the busy night spots to get a good quiet nights sleep, but close enough to join in if you want! The Pepi Gabl offered a nice cosy atmosphere and clearly caters mainly for families. There is no bar and most people who stayed the same week as us had kids. So expect a lot of noisy kids and nothing much too happen after dinner finishes at 10.00pm. If you want to go out though there is plenty nearby to get involved in.
The Espirit Chalet staff were generally very helpful and reacted well to enquiries or requests. They were all very young though and sometimes lacked understanding when it came to requests orientated towards child care or safety. We stayed in apartment 9 and the room they put our 2 & ½ year old in had an adjoining kitchen area with stove and dishwasher. He loves appliances and we could see the whole place being flooded in moments! There were also pictures hanging within easy reach of little hands and no child safety plugs for the various sockets. So some work was needed to get the apartment safe for a toddler, which we did do. We could not even swap rooms as the main bedroom in the apartment had fully opening windows and then a 2 storey drop.
The crèche facilities were good offering cover from 08.30 – 17.00. The Chalet staff also offer an evening listening service (19.30 till 22.30) and have a late night snuggle area. For toddlers there was some moving about required through the day. We dropped our little guy off across the road at the baby crèche, but he then had to move to another site further away each day. It seems that Espirit have a central crèche for toddlers but collect the kids from various points in the resort.
The food offered was very good. Breakfast came with a lot of choice and dinner was fixed courses but tasty and surprisingly good for hotel dinners. So hats off to the onsite chef, he’s done a fantastic job in turning out really good food.
St Anton itself is a very nice town / resort. There is loads going on that caters to all manner of tastes. You can get blasted with the 20 something’s all night or have a nice meal or even a glass of wine in a wine bar. It has some famous après ski spots and these are fun to visit. We liked that there was so much choice all within a fairly small area. It’s a visually pleasant town as well with a lot of character. There also seemed to be a good mix of visitors from all over the world there, giving it a very international feel. There really is something for everyone to enjoy in St Anton.
The snowboarding was excellent. Not a place to come as a beginner, but plenty to offer an intermediate or better boarder. The piste gradings were a little random. We did some very easy blacks and some very challenging blues! I’d say the majority are red runs. Some connecting routes are a little flat and no real fun for boarders, but they act to link different parts of the extensive ski area. There is lots of opportunity for off piste and you really need to be guided to get the most out of that. We had a guide from ABC Snowboarding (Walter Schmied) and he was very good (and cheaper than the main ski school guides), being fully certified to take people off piste.
All in all I think the Pepi Gabl is a great Chalet Hotel for those with families. Don’t expect 5*, but they do very well with what they have. Our little boy was happy and this allowed us to enjoy the slopes. Some work could be done to make the rooms more child friendly. The location is very good and St Anton has a lot to offer any type of visitor. I'd be happy to return and would stay at the Pepi Gabl again.

The concerns that have been noted with regard to the child-safety in Suite 9 have been referred to our resort management team, who I understand have already taken action to address several of the points that have been mentioned within the review, despite their not having been raised by other of our guests that have occupied the room since the start of the 2012/13 season. Our staff do react to any such guest concerns and I understand that this was no exception during the week of the reviewer’s holiday.
Despite the above, it is pleasing to note that the reviewer would return with his family to St Anton and the Chalet Pepi Gabl. Indeed, we very much hope to have the pleasure of welcoming them again.
