“Absolute quality - we will be back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

My wife and I tend to like small, family run hotels, this was our first time in Obergurgl and the Hotel Olympia didn't disappoint.

It's located slightly out of the village centre, up quite a steep hill, and it isn't ski-in, ski-out but it is possible to ski very close to the hotel, meaning only a short walk from the piste.

I read one review on here that said "Don't bother staying here unless you are German..." - to that I say "Rubbish". During our stay, my wife and I were the only English guests and the staff, other guests were all extremely friendly. When we arrived the owner greeted us, like a lot of Austrian men can do, he did come across as a bit surly but he was very pleasant and even gave us a welcome drink of prosecco. His wife worked on the reception most of the time we were there and she was lovely always taking time to have a chat with us after we'd returned from a day's skiing.

The staff in the restaurant were excellent, very attentive without being overbearing. They couldn't do enough for us and again they made an effort to actually talk to us - and they always made eye contact and said goodbye was we left the restaurant - unlike a lot of hotels where the staff barely acknowledge your presence.

The food was incredible and there was plenty of it - one evening we had a gala dinner that consisted of 8 courses - yes that's eight courses! All food was freshly prepared and very well presented. We were served some things we ordinarily wouldn't have chosen but I can honestly say we ate everything. My wife (after years of saying she doesn't like them) even found she liked tiger prawns!

Our room was on the first floor and it was quite pleasant. The view was out of the front of the hotel and so wasn't fantastic. It was also just a bit on the small side. I'd probably choose a junior suite next time.

We travelled with some friends who were staying in much more expensive hotels but they didn't seem to get the level of service we did.

The plan is to go back to Obergurgl next season and without doubt we'll be staying at the Olympia again.

This was our third visit to Obergurgl, and to the Hotel Olympia. The hotel and the staff once again proved to be first class, from the standards in the rooms to the food and service. "Friendly and professional" says it all.

Our 2nd floor junior suite had all the facilities you would expect e.g. lounge area, comfortable furnishing and bed, balcony looking down the valley. The bathroom was a good size with double sinks.

The food was excellent, with a good choice between a meat, fish, and vegetarian dish each day, as well as a good salad bar. Breakfast was buffet style with an excellent selection.

If you are there for any length of time get the Otztal card it covers all the transport services and the network of cable cars throughout the Otztal valley, as well as giving reductions at some places.

NOTE. Obergurgl is at 6,300 feet with lifts to over 10,000 feet, so watch out for the thin air when you first arrive.

Room Tip: Try and get a balcony room that faces down the valley

We have just returned from a fabulous 2 week holiday hiking in Obergurgl. Stayed at the Hotel Olympia and were so pleased with our choice. The food was fantastic. From the ample buffet breakfast in the morning to the 4 course dinner in the evening we enjoyed all of it. The service was excellent and the staff could not have been more efficient. The hotel itself is lovely and bright, modern and spotlessly clean. We loved our room and having paid extra for a suite we were glad we did. This gave us a sitting area for chilling out in afer a days hiking. We also had a balcony and although the aspect was north facing the views were stunning. Our bathroom was huge, the beds very comfy and there was ample storage space. We really appreciated the extra touches ie the afternoon cake and the packed breakfast we were given on our last morning as we left at 4am. We also loved Obergurgl for the stunning scenery. You will not go wrong if you enjoy high altitude hiking. We also enjoyed a day at the Spa in Langenfeld. Highly recommended if you enjoy relaxing in warm water pools outside. There are also saunas, a gym and relaxation areas. As in everywhere in Austria it was spotlessly clean, well organised and good value for money. I would recommend the Hotel Olympia to anyone and would happily go there again. It is a testament to the excellent standards of the hotel that some of the couples we met have stayed at the hotel 5+ times already.

Room Tip: We were glad we paid extra for a suite as it gave us a sitting area with a sofa a table and a tv. Gr...

The olympia was a lovely small hotel, our room was spacious and very clean and tv even had bbc1!!
The food served up was absolutely first class and delicious from the continental style buffet breakfast to the five course meal every night.
Obergurgl was a fantastic walking base and even a freak days august snow couldnt have put us off, we thoroughly recomend this hotel to all and many thanks to such welcoming hospitality from the Koll family.

Spent a wonderful week at the Hotel Olympia in Obergurgl late August 2011. We had never been to Austria before and was unsure what to expect - but everything was excellent - the hotel, the area and the local services. The hotel was clean, bright and modern. The food was exceptional and the staff very pleasant and well mannered.

We was unsure about what we would be like with regard to the high altitude at Obergurgl - but it was not a problem for us. Although not serious walkers we found the many walks within our capabilities. The weather helped - we experienced lovely sunshine and crystal blue skies. - the views down the valley were breathtaking. I would certainly recommend Obergirgl and Hotel Olympia to all.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel overlooking the valley (although it is only a small hotel s...

As the headlines indicates this hotel was not welcoming to those not German or those under 15 years of age!
The hotel refused to serve tap water to the 10 children in our party, but instead sold botteld water at over £5.00 pre bottle and camped on the childrens table constantly offering them coke and other fizzy, (profitable) drinks.
Apart from that the hotel owner and his wife were outwardly unfriendly towards us all, even tot he extent of giving free schnaps each night to all but the English, together with this they brusque in their attitude to the children and restrictive in the use of the hotel facilities.
The food was passable but smacked of trying too hard to produce top cuisine. Pictures on plates is not what hungry skiers require!
Contrary to the management most of the staff were helpful and friendly but clearly operating in a hostile environment.

Room Tip: Dont go!

We have just returned from a fantastic 2 week stay in the Olympia. The Hotel is small but perfectly formed! Our room was large and well equipped. The beds were really comfortable, great shower/bath, minibar, maid serviced everyday. The food was out of the world - literally a stonking 5 course meal every night, with great wine (but no pressure to buy as we've experienced in other Obergurgl hotels). The service from the Hotel's owner's and staff was nothing short of excellent - very attentive with a personal touch. We felt like nothing was too much trouble. We accessed the piste by skiing down to the button lift, then onto the Festkogel Gondola to take you 'up top', fairly easy but a slight walk up hill on the way back! This didnt spoil things though. The spa area was lovely, although 'naked' which wasnt our thing so we didnt partake. The one thing we couldnt get over was how peaceful it was at night, very quiet and relaxing. The snow conditions were excellent which always helps of course, but we would most definately return to this hotel again.
