“Absolutly fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2012 via mobile

This has to be about the 6th time me and my family have visited the Edelweiss & Gurgl, and this time has to be the best ever. The food was wonderful every day and the wine waiter we had was lovely. He spoke wonderful English which makes everything easier when you don't speak the local language. All the staff were very helpful and well trained and were happy to help at all times. The snow conditions were not the best at the time but that is not the fault of the hotel, there was a sufficient amount for the time we were there. It is a wonderful hotel and for me the best one at any ski resort I have ever been to. Defiantly be returning next year!

We stayed here as part of a package booked via Inghams, the hotel was amazing (despite once again Inghams providing poor customer service) and we were not at all disappointed!! The hotel was perfect for ski in, ski out...and the lift next to it offered great access for all our party including total beginners, intermediates, experts and non skiers. The ski shop is the best I have come across and the boot room a great bonus.

The food was amazing, the Christmas celebrations perfect and our waiter for the week one of the most attentive I have seen. Reception were great to help out, with food after a diverted late flight and a cold room at 1am. The bar was lovely, roaring fire and red wine went down a treat and with an elderly non skier everyone in the hotel was welcoming and caring. A quick email in advance to them and they guaranteed rooms next to each other, which the travel company were not prepared to do for us.

I would defiantly recommend it for a European ski choice (we usually ski as a couple in North America) and some of our group are looking to book again for next Christmas. The hotel has a great website and ability to book direct...which if we were to go again would definitely do and avoid using a tour operator.

Whilst there you must ski over in Hochgurgl and go to the Top Mountain Star on a clear day, the most fun I had all week.

Room Tip: Get a room that looks out over the piste...great view when the sun rises over the mountain.

This hotel really does have the best location in Obergurgl, the blue run into the village literally ends at the boot room (under the hotel) steps and the village is on the doorstep so there is no annoying steep hill to climb up and down each time you want to pop out (as with the Gotthard, Bellevue etc).

The style is old school with a wonderful "umbrella bar" with a roaring log fire, and this bar is also smoke free (for the non smokers out there!). For those of you that do, Austria allows smoking inside, so you can smoke at the main reception bar. There is the main restaurant for breakfast and evening meal, as well as the restaurant that can be accessed from the outside which is the "pay" one for lunch etc. This one is lovely - almost all glass, so fabulous for keeping warm and watching the world go by.

The rooms are clean and comfortable. I recommend requesting a high floor south facing room - you have a balcony with amazing view of both the piste, village and mountains further afield, some even have a bath (best to request in advance) for the perfect soak to ease those aching legs!

The food, very surprisingly seems to be a point of debate on other reviews. Our experience was that it was a very good example of a decent restaurant. The chefs were creative and tried hard to avoid stereotypical dull hotel fare. My boyfriend raved about the quality of the meat and it looked exceptionally well cooked. They offered a "back up" menu to anyone that didn't fancy the main menu options that evening (very flexible). I was also amazed at the effort they went to to offer me a varied vegan meal every evening - wonderful service. One evening when we felt unwell, they even carried all 5 courses to our room so that we didn't feel left out! Free of charge!

The attached ski hire shop makes everything easy, but beware - Austria is expensive and hiring gold standard ski's for 6 days cost about £140 each! They were of fantastic quality though and appeared brand new. The ski school is also very good, we both had private lessons (again - very expensive) but worth every penny. If you're nervous or a beginner, ask for Christina, she's fabulous. I've had a few different instructors and she's got the best out of me and I even enjoyed doing it (I'm a very nervous beginner).

The spa is good - very large with lots of different sauna options. Do go for a swim in the outdoor pool - it overlooks the mountains, you can watch everyone skiing back down and it really is special swimming surrounded by snow. Admittedly for some the water may be a touch cool (it is after all outdoors and not a bath), but it's perfectly acceptable.

Finally, head to the Nederhutt for lunch/evening and say hi to Selma - you'll get an amazing welcome and encouraged to go back on an evening to experience their famous apres ski rock nights (they have their own band). Genuinely fab atmosphere and really good food too. It's also only at mid station on Hohe Mutt Bahn lift - even beginners can get to it and join in the fun.

All in all, both the resort and the hotel itself get a big thumbs up. It really couldn't have been better. We've lots more places to try, but we'd definitely go back.

Room Tip: Ask for a south facing room on a high floor - the BEST views! I'd also recommend asking for a ba...

My husband and I have just returned from a pre-Xmas holiday at the E&G, during which we learnt to ski. A lot of what I have to stay has been said previously, i.e. the best location in town, great staff and service, lovely traditional lobby and bar areas, amazing food, well-maintained rooms and great spa. Therefore, I'll point a few of things that stood out for us:

Positives:

- We found the hotel a little chilly and our request for extra duvets was sorted within 15 minutes.
- An adults only spa evening was held one night including drinks, during which we almost had the whole place to ourselves.
- Great speed free wireless
- The best breakfast that I've ever seen.

Negatives:
- Our standard double room was well-maintained, but fairly compact. It also faced the road and was noisy in the mornings due to snow clearing vehicles. Also, the windows were quite draughty and we found that to keep the room warm, we had to ask for more duvets and place towels over the draughts.

Overall, we were really pleased with our choice of hotel and despite the few negatives, it's easily one of the best that we've ever stayed in.

Room Tip: Book direct for the best rooms (I'm pretty sure the smallest rooms are left for bookings through...

This Hotel is in the most outstanding location for a winter sports enthusiast: it is literally 30 seconds from boot room (under the hotel itself) to the chairlift or gondola to two of the areas best slopes.

Hotel is charming in a traditional Austrian style, food is outstanding - with excellent breakfast spreads, and almost gourmet five-course evening meals. Service faultless.

A ski bus runs every 10 mins (except for a slightly less regular service at lunchtime for an hour or so) between the Hotel frontage and Pill (which access the whole Hochgurgl ski run area).

We went as a couple in a group of 14 people - overall package was very good value, and the two children in the group were very welcome and looked after by the staff.

On departing morning, the hotel had laid on a full breakfast spread at 5:30 a.m. - unnecessarily obliging, but welcome.

Only minor criticism was that the hotel was extremely hot (at least in the rooms you could turn radiators off and open the window), and even more minor was that the free wireless internet required you to log in every single time.

Rooms are on the small side, although spending a lot of time in the room isn't the purpose of the trip.

Local ski school first rate - and as someone who has never skied gave me unexpected confidence...!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing south (over the slopes) with balcony.

For many years until now our choice of Austrian resort had been Kitzbuhel and had our favourite hotel there not been subject to some major changes it is unlikely we would have visited Obergurgl.
We are very pleased that we did and that we chose hotel Edelweiss and Gurgl.
First the resort. It is different from Kitzbuhel in that it is smaller, less “fashionable” and is more clearly tourist driven. It is also considerably higher at 1,900 metres (Kitzbuhel 1,200). So it is not a resort for idly perambulating around the shops – in the summer, only go there if you really enjoy walking. Not being a skier, I cannot comment on the winter.
The walking is magnificent and made even better by the fact that it is at the head of the valley and you are starting from 1,900 metres. This means that it is not too difficult to get to glacier height (using one of the lifts if necessary), working your way back down by a variety of alternative routes. The views are spectacular in all directions, including those of the Italian Dolomites – the Italian border is not far away. If the weather is unfavourable you can head down the valley via picturesque footpaths to the numerous small and pretty villages, also served by a regular bus service.
A drawback of the height is that it does shorten the summer season. And we were told that June can be dodgy We were there in late August/early September and any later would have been risky.. We did have one day of snow but the rest of the time was mainly sunny, around 17c-20c.

The hotel Edelweiss and Gurgl is nicely situated near to the village centre (such as it is), the church and, importantly, the main lift. The reception area and the staff are welcoming and the dining room is pleasant. There is also an a la carte dining room which did not appear to be much used. We booked through a travel company (Thomson Lakes and Mountains) and chose the best option available in the brochure – a double room with balcony. We were a little disappointed with the size of the room and I think it probable that better and bigger rooms are held back by the hotel for direct bookings (or perhaps other operators prepared to contract more expensive rooms). That said, our room was adequate and beautifully maintained, just not one to hang around in too long. Next time we will try and arrange for something a little larger.
The food was excellent at both breakfast and dinner with a good choice of wine. The dress code of smart casual in the dining room was well adhered to during our two week stay.
The bar was well patronized and seemed very relaxed. We were too knackered after our long walks to participate.
There was a good cross-section of nationalities staying at the hotel, French. German. Italian, Austrian etc. - certainly not overrun by Brits.

Two months on, memories remain very positive and we will very likely return, hopefully to a rather better room.

Room Tip: Check the room size when booking, some rooms may be smaller than you expect.

We’ve stayed at the Edelweiss twice and have found it to be superbly situated for hiking. The lifts will save you time and energy for higher level walks toward the glaciers or you can head down the valley along the river for fairly leisurely walking.
Check in was too easy, the staff being extremely efficient, friendly and helpful, providing us with all the essential information we required without taking undue time to do so.
The rooms are clean and comfortable and robes and slippers are provided for trips to the pool and spa. Views from the south facing rooms are spectacular and all rooms have a balcony.
Restaurant service in the evenings was occasionally slow but generally friendly.
Meals were of a very high quality with a typical tirolean dish always offered as one of the choices on the fixed dinner menu. There is also always a children’s buffet of chips, beans, burgers etc. Breakfast buffet had wide choice of cereal, cold meats, cheese, hot food (eggs cooked to order, bacon, sausage etc.).
The pool area is adequate but not great. The spa area, however, is superb, offering a variety of sauna’s, and steam rooms and is ideal for relaxing the muscles after a day hiking or skiing.
From what we could tell, the hotel is also ideally situated for skiing, being just a few steps away from two lifts and with a ski shop and storage room opening onto the entrance to the lift station.
