This was our first holiday to Austria, purely for a skiing holiday as the price was good (from Lastminute.com) and also because I had to find a good birthday present for my other half! We landed at Salzberg from Bristol, which was a very early flight (3.50am) so already we were quite tired after being up all night Friday and driving from midnight on the Saturday. We found our tour operator (Inghams) and they put us on a nice air conditioned coach where we could relax in comfort for our journey up to Niederau. After driving past all of the other resorts we started to think that maybe our resort won't be as good as we hoped, but an hour or so later we started to go up and up and up until we arrived at the picturesque village of niederau on a bright sunny day in March!
We immediately woke up and checked ourselves into the Harfenwirt hotel where Herbert took our details down but never told us where our room was since the rooms wouldn't be ready until mid afternoon, so we had a quick stroll down town to have a look and then came back to have a drink outside on the patio. The view from the patio was so nice with the bottom of the red/black slope directly opposite the hotel and the tip of the mountain in sight, so we drank most of the afternoon and chatted to a few guests whilst waiting for the checking in period to die down so we could finally get our room key.
After a few Ziphers we finally got our room key where Herberts nephew (I think) whisked us off to the annexe up the road. Our room was on the top floor and facing the south of Niederau, so the view was spectacular! The rooms were very well furnished and the bathrooms were also spot on with a very big shower! We also had a balcony which was nice to have a drink and cigarette on after a hard days skiing (or falling over), you can also hang your clothes out on the hooks outside to air out some of your sweaty clothes!
When meal time came we were quite worried since we heard that Herbert sits you with other groups of people that he sees best, fortunately we were seated with two fantastic couples whom we got on with like a house on fire so meal times were always something to look forward to! The food was adequate in the evenings, bit of a bizarre combination sometimes but overall pretty good for a 3 star! The breakfast buffet was always the same but I love european breakfasts so that was ok, especially the pate! Couldn't get enough of that each morning! I also had lunch at the hotel on the Sunday when we weren't skiing which also turned out to be great food and also very quick service!
The position of the Harfenwirt compared to the rest of the village is out of the way so you had virtually no noise at all at night, apart from the small bar beneath our room where Herbert played his harp along with an accordian player, but we were there most nights anyway so we could share the noise. It is a quick 5 minute walk down to the town and the bars that are there and every morning was an enjoyable walk. Luckily the place we got our skis from (Thaler) had its own free locker room next to the irish bar (O'Malleys) so we didn't have to carry our boots and skis back to the hotel with us every day, good thing since they are a pig to carry! If you did want to take your equipment back with you, the Harfenwirt had its own free ski room for you to store your skis and boots.
Overall the Harfenwirt was a joy to stay in, especially as it was more like a 4 star in a 3 stars clothing! We only paid £249 each through Lastminute.com so it was a fantastic deal! Since we were complete beginners we had to pay a bit more for the ski school (5 days) which was provided by Wildshonau ski schule and the lift passes weren't cheap but the experience you get out of it is phenominal! Book your holiday for next year!
