“Great service - perfect base for snowbaording”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2010

Have just got back from a week at the Traube booked through Neilson. Whilst agreeing with most of the feedback left so far I don't think the low ratings are justified.

Firstly, lets get some of the negatives out of the way. Some of the rooms are a little pokey. We had 104, 206 and 302 which could be seen as basic, but were actually very average for Austria and considerably better than some I've stayed in in France. Room 205 was a better size, and I got moved to 409 during the week which was a lovely room.

There can be some noise from the bar area, particularly on the first floor rooms, and there is a security light outside 104 which can make it difficult to sleep (hence the reason I asked for a different room).

As for food allergies, we needed a gluton-free menu for one of our party. This wasn't a problem, and would have been ready from the Saturday if we'd mentioned it when booking. As it was as soon as the supermarket opened on Monday, the menu was adapted as necessary.

Everything else was very good. All of the staff were friendly and helpful, and all spoke excellent english. Nothing that we asked for was too much trouble.
The food was good - Bacon and scrambled eggs, toast, cereal, and fresh fruit were available for breakfast (perhaps no porridge, but they can't supply everything). A three course dinner, with a choice of two mains, which were well prepeared and delicious.
A convenient location right in the middle of town, close to the lake and less than 10 minutes to the main lift.

If you want somewhere to stay for a romantic break then this may not be the place, but if you want somewhere convenient and hassle free then give the Traube a go.

It is a perfect place for a non-demanding person like me, who stays at camp-sites, b&b or under the open sky and who does not like all the hotels frills. The location is very good - 1 minute by feet to the lake, to the church, to the food store. At least 5 cafes and restaurants in a radius of 1 minute. Rooms are spacious, clean, with home style furniture. Hotel's restaurant serves very good meal and the staff there allows to dance until 3 am :-) The only thing I was missing is the warm porridge for the breakfast - there are only cold meals, but the choice is good.

The Hotel Traube is a solid choice for budget conscious skiers. Plus points are that rooms are clean, evening meals are excellent, the owners and staff are very helpful and friendly and the bar is cosy. Zell is a great choice and the skiing is fantastic there and at the glacier in Kaprun.

On the negative side, there is occasionally some late night noise from outside the hotel because it is situated in the centre of Zell. Also, you are unlikely to enjoy staying in the Traube if you have an issue with passive smoking. Austria has yet to ban smoking in enclosed spaces but some restaurants and hotels have introduced their own 'bans' and this is not one of them.

The hotel is approximately 5 minutes walk from the City Xpress Gondola but it does feel like a trek with skis and boots so consider renting a locker at the top of the gondola for 2 Euro for 24 hours (down the steps to your left).

I was a bit nervous about staying at the Hotel Traube after reading some of the previous reviews however, they could not have been more wrong! The staff are friendly and fun and the food is great. You get what you pay for in the rooms but they are warm, clean and more than adequate for your needs. Staying on the third floor I didn't notice any noise from the bar or the street.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to ski in the lovely resort of Zell Am See. I can't wait to go back.

having just read past reviews of the hotel, i felt i had to add my personal experience of my stay to balance perspective against previous negative reviews. i'm not sure if the hotel has been recently renovated, but my stay there was nothing short of excellent (no sign of peeling plaster or reheated food). the room was a little small, but then again who goes to a ski resort to sit in their room?! it was clean and basic, the bathroom was en suite and clean, the staff ever helpful and friendly, and although it could be noisy at times from the street below (i don't think the hotel can really control revelers in the street), it is in a central location which is a bonus.

overall i would heartily recommend it, and would be more then happy to stay there in future. and also, they keep strongbow in stock, which was a massive bonus

Like some of the others I have decided to post my own review (first time newbie) to counteract the impression given by the miserable reviews earlier - we were in Zell an See at the Hotel Traube last week and heard all the horror stories of people who had read these reviews and thought they were in for a horrible time .... couldn't believe it!

We have stayed in Zell am See for the last 4 years, 3 of them at the Traube. The second year our stay was at the Grand Hotel down on the lake and we decided to go back to the Traube for the last 2 years - says it all!

The hotel is simple, clean and staff are friendly. Food is good and plentiful. Rooms are comfortable and private.

Location is excellent and access to the slopes superb. We heard from our rep that some people who had asked for a change of hotel after reading the reviews and before they got to the hotel have said they were happy they weren’t moved and one group has already booked to go back!

This hotel is good value for money - and friendly with it. If you have champagne tastes don't expect to pay beer money!

Hotel Traube offered us a great value break skiing in a beautiful location in Zell am See. The hotel gave us everything you'd expect from a 3 star operation but the service from the staff was truly 1st class!

Being greeted by the owner Lars when we arrived was a great personal touch and he and his team at the hotel delivered a perfect week of high standard hospitality to us all week. The food was very good, freshly cooked and exceeded our expectations, certainly a lot better than food we've had prepared en mass in other larger hotels previously.

The hotel bar and brasserie had a great lively vibe to it without being too loud and gave the hotel a great atmosphere, many of the locals also flock in which is also a good sign! It was perfect for the apres ski session as well as a relaxed drink after dinner too.

The hotel room itself was quite small but clean and fresh and to be honest suited our needs for the week as the main purpose of our trip was to be out on the slopes as much as possible. We had a en suite shower room which although was slightly dated in appearance provided plenty of hot water and was again very clean. The room was made up every morning and all linen and towels changed half way during our stay.

Overall we thought the Traube was a great friendly hotel offering all you could need for a base in a great resort. It is located right in the heart of Zell and you can walk to everything easily with 5 - 10 minutes including the train and bus stations. Without a doubt we would stay here again as ideal for a couple for a ski break without breaking the bank!

I've read the other reviews below and with the exception of the last one am not sure what people were expecting given the average cost - if you wanted 5* facilities on offer then surely you'd have been prepared to pay for them and not stayed here anyway!

  • Liked — Brilliant Service
  • Disliked — Bedroom slightly small and would have appreciated a bath in the bathroom
