“Briliant Ski Hotel, excellent location, spa, food, room...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2009

After months of searching for a ski hotel in Europe for a long weekend with two teenage children, we were looking for a top class hotel and after reviewing the reviews, we decided on this one. We choose the half board gourmet option with a Spa deluxe room for ourselves and the superior for the kids. Rooms were very modern which we loved, only negative was the DVD didn't work. The team at Mavida were superb, world class, every request was met with a smile and dealt with within minutes. Food was excellent and a good wine list. The hotel is located within 500metres of the gondola and the ski rental shop. The only negative was the gym as was small and the equipment was old but with 6 hours skiing everyday, we weren't bothered. I would recommend the private transfers to and from Salzburg hotel which the hotel organises. We will definitely be returning. A true hidden gem.

I don't even know where to start. Mavida is a fabulous hotel. The decor is very modern, rustic while very cozy. Rooms are large with milion dollar views of the Alps (at least mine was). You can choose a mattrace, pillow and comforter!!! Thus sleeping conditions are absolutely best! My poiilows, comforter and sheets were super sort and comfortable. I slept like a baby. Room has a surround sound stereo, which also has speakers in a bathroom. Speaking of, bathtoom is lage with oversized shower, all necessary toiletries and super cool decor. There are bath robes available and extremely soft slipers. Everything is just perfect. Rooms offer free Internet and there is a computer in the lobby. Breakfast is included and absolutley delicious whilst healthy with fresh squized juices.

One must know that this hotel has unbelievable spa with heated indoos and outdoor pools, saunas, steam rooms, and all spa treatments one could imagine. Next to the indoor pool are heated water beds - perfect for relaxation. After skiing all day on a glacier in Kaprun I went for a swim and got a full body massage - it was fantastic!

Loved this hotel!

The Mavida is located about a mile out of Zell which is noted more as a ski resort but the scenery is so beautiful it has all year appeal.
The location is not a problem really. It is a nice walk by the lake or the hotel will lend you a bike if you like.
The Mavida is very stylish as you would expect and has a lovely laid back feel.
The staff are young and stylish but very professional and well trained.
The restaurant is very good both in terms of food and service.
At breakfast they will squeeze you fresh juice and the pancakes were delicious.
The room we had was one of the bigger rooms but I still found it a little small although well appointed.
The spa facilities are absolutely top notch. Great saunas and steam rooms.
We were lucky with the weather so spent time round the pool area which is a nice and private.
The hotel has a lovely quiet sunbathing area just round the lake. We found it by accident at the end of our stay and get the impression it is an under used facility. If you get a nice sunny day and fancy lazing around then give it a go.
The Mavida was quiet at the end of August but we couldn't work out why. Maybe it comes into its own in the skiing season but we found it ideal for outdoors types in the summer.
A typical day for us would have been a great breakfast followed by a cable car up the mountain. An hour or two walking on the mountain taking in the superb views and watching the paragliders.
Then back to hotel for a spell by the pool followed by a sauna and then a first class dinner.
Is there a better way to spend a day?
We are itching to get back there.
I just hope the hotel is well supported so it can maintain its very high standards

We stayed for a week in Summer, which is off season as the area is mainly geared up towards skiing. Never the less the area and the hotel were still farily busy as there are a large number of outdoor pursuits available in the warmer months.

Despite being moderately busy the service in the hotel, from reception to restaurant to spa, was always excellent. There was only one restaurant but both the service and food are excellent and it is well worth trying at least once during a stay. Food was also served in the bar, which was cosy even in summer- in winter there is a huge real fire which I imagine gives the place a wonderful atmosphere. A no smoking area in the bar would be nice though.

When we needed some laundry doing it was returned within 24 hours and even arranging some dry cleaning wasn't a problem.

We had a standard room which was not huge (although the bed was!) but still big enough and nicely furnished. The bathroom features a huge walk in shower which was so good we wanted to take it home with us but sadly no bath. The rooms also feature a cd/dvd player and free internet access if you have brought your laptop- wireless internet and a desktop computer are available for guest use in reception. All rooms have a spacious balcony with stunning views of the surrounding hills and which we able to make good use of but which prehaps would be less useful in winter. There is no minibar or kettle in the room but when we used room service for drinks they arrived promptly and with a smile. There is no air conditioning in the rooms but even in mid summer it never really got hot enough for that to be a problem and you can always open the balcony door for extra ventilaiton. There is a railway line next to the hotel but the trains are small and infrequent (although doubtless on time!) so even with the door open noise isn't a problem. The soundproofing between the rooms could be a little better however.

The main feature of the hotel is of course the spa, which was defintely worthy of five stars. There is an outdoor and indoor pool- there were plentiful sun loungers around the outdoor pool and water beds for relaxation around the indoor one. The relaxation theme continues with the spa treatment menu and the numerous treatment rooms as well as the sauna and jacuzzi The gym was modern but quite small- the lack of air conditioning was a little more noticeable here.

Overall a five star experience in a modern and friendly hotel with excellent facilities.

  • Liked — Cleanliness, spa, resaurant
  • Disliked — Needs more non-smoking areas and better soundproofing in the rooms.

The Mavida Balance Hotel in Zell am See exceeded all our expectations and I can highly recommend this exceptional hotel.

Whilst the hotel is not right in Zell am See this was not an issue for us. The hotel is a short drive or scenic bike ride (offered free by hotel).

We stayed in the Deluxe Panorama Suite on the top floor. This suite was exceptional offering a spacious, modern and contemporary place to chill out and enjoy the stunning mountain scenery.

The restaurant is of a very high standard and we chose the full board option which worked well for us. After being out all day exploring this stunning region it was nice to come back to the delicious food served at the restaurant. I imagine you would be hard pressed to find a better restaurant in Zell am See.

The spa is also exceptional. Indoor pool, two saunas, steam room, Kneipp foot baths and relaxations rooms. They also have a flotation tank and the Blue Box which offer a unique and special experience. The only downside was the massage I had was quite average.

This region offer some fantastic day trips. We visited Krimml Falls, Bad Gastein and drove the Grossglockner Alpine Highway which was an incredible and not to be missed experience.

For us the Mavida offered us a modern, contemporary hotel which is often rare to find in Europe. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.

Once you get used to the lack of traditional Austrian alpine charm, you begin to wish that there were more hotels of this calibre throughout the alps. From the moment you step into the designer lobby, you know that you will leave wishing that you could stay longer.

There is a high ratio of staff to guests, and everyone from the cleaner to the owner is polite, friendly and keen to go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Our room, was big by Austrian standards and was furnished to a high standard, comfy bed, large wardrobes, high-spec bathroom, flatscreen TV, CD player, balcony, proper pillows (rare for Austria), but strangely, no blinds. Not sure whether these were missing from all the rooms (there were fixings where presumably they had once been), but it did allow for a beautiful view of the sunrise over the snowcapped mountains while still in bed in the morning.

The ski-cellar was of good size, with plenty of heated boot racks, and literally a 5 minute stroll from the gondolas. A short walk back in the afternoon, followed by a slice of cake in the bar, and you were ready to hit the spa area, for a relaxing doze on the water-beds beside a decent sized pool. After a swim, transfer yourself to the sauna and steam room area, the best massages, or relax in the "silence" room.

After all that relaxing, time to enjoy dinner in the Mavida's restaurant. Would strongly recommend booking the half-board option, since the food was definitely the high point of this hotel. Service was friendly and efficient while a window through to the kitchen provided some interest to see the chef's doing what they do best. The menu presented a daily special 4-course or choice to go a la carte. In addition there was an extensive wine cellar.

If you still had the energy for more, you could head to the comfy bar, with live music at the weekends. Again, the bar had been given the designer treatment and was nothing like your traditional Austrian bar - well, apart from the smoke. While much of Europe seems to like nothing more than imposing a bit of passive smoke on those who don't, it does seem very strange that a hotel like the Mavida that prides itself on "wellbeing" and "balance" has not kept the bar area smoke-free (but then I suppose indulging in a drink probably isn't strictly that healthy either - trouble is the smoke tends to drift into other areas too!

After a great night's sleep, time to eat again, with a great choice from the breakfast buffet, which included pancakes or eggs cooked to order from the kitchen.

Overall, the Mavida was different from any other hotel I've stayed in in Austria, but well worth the extra cost of staying at "any other hotel" in Austria too. Great for couples who want to "escape" for a few days.

Spent a week at this hotel during August, great location, just a couple of minutes by bike (which the hotel provides free) to the lake.
The hotel is very comfortable with great views and, a first for me, a chlorine free pool (my eyes, what have you not done to my eyes).
As it was off season the place was pretty quiet, the bar's typical of any hotel but it has possibly the best barman that's ever got me boozed up, very friendly and informative.

Went for the deal that included dinner which turned out to be enjoyable once but became slightly more intense as the week went on. Very polite waiting staff but there was one lad who was particularly SERIOUS about serving up dinner. He was very effecient but radiated discomfort, jerking his way around the restaurant floor, glowering at the other staff and looked like the type of fellow who may well snap in half if the wine is a half a degree too warm or too cold.
