Just returned from a week at Stadt Wein booked through Thomson Lakes and Mountains.First time staying in Zell am See but have holidayed in Austria (Tirol) many times before in summer.
What we liked about the hotel:-
Very relaxing and laid back.
The staff.Mentioning especially Kristina,Klaus and Viktoria.Warm, helpful and genuinely friendly people.
The room.Paid extra for a larger room with a settee, and a balcony on 2 sides accessed through french windows because room was on a corner. When we arrived Klaus let us view 3 rooms and choose the one we preferred.
Drinks prices-fair in a country that hammers the drinks prices.Better to buy wine by the jug on draught (white Gruner Veltliner: red Zweigelt) than by the bottle.A bottle will cost around 24 euros! Good lager 4 euros per half litre (and I consumed a quantity!).Don't bother with mineral water, the tap water is lovely and free.
What was below par for the price we paid:-
No air-conditioning.We had 3 days and nights of fierce heat and it was most unpleasant without aircon.
Food.We like traditional Austrian food and we know what to expect,we know they don't serve veg, but in the main this was poor quality for a 4*.Only really nice dinner was the 1 self-service buffet evening when we were spoiled for choice. The braised sliced sirloin of beef was bril.Salad course and cheese selection every night was samey but good.Dinner is 6.30-8.00.We arrived for dinner one night at 7.00 and the cold roast beef with tartare sauce on the menu had all gone and was not replenished.Breakfast 0700-1030.Scrambled eggs and bacon had gone by 9am every day.Orange juice very weak, obviously diluted to stretch it.Not what you get usually in 4* Austrian hotels.Good choice for cold breakfasts though.
It is an uphill hike from the town centre to the hotel or a bus ride E1.70 each for 2 stops ride! No problem the walk for youngsters but we are mid-60s.
Very hard beds.
Hardly any evening entertainment.May not bother everybody. Not that important in Austria.
It is a hotel that accepts coach parties from Germany.Their coach customers are not big spenders. The hotel allows guests to make up their packed lunch from the breakfast buffet. And they do.Signs ask them to make up their butties at their table and not at the servery but the signs are ignored.Impossible to get at the breakfast table selection for coach customers at the servery making up sandwiches (many),slicing tomatoes, buttering bread, selecting sliced meats and cheeses.Judging by the size of the packed lunches I thought a siege was imminent.
OK but definitely not 4* Platinum.Next time will try Tirolerhof as people on our transfer bus were full of praise for it.
