“Great Ski Location ;)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2009

Stayed here with some friends for a week's skiing recently, and it was fantastic!
The hotel itself is lovely, although the rooms do leave a bit to be desired....in saying that tho, they are typical of any ski hotels i've stayed in. Basic enough but scrupulously clean!

The leisure area is lovely, great selection of saunas [nude] and steam rooms, pool, relaxation area, options for masage etc.

Foodwise - again no complaints. Everything was lovely. I'm a bit of a connisseur of breakfasts, and they were fab!

the staff were really nice - friendly, accommodating, and gave really good service.

Overall I'd definitely recommend this hotel, and would certainly stay there again myself.

Good location, warm atmosphere, friendly personal, cosy rooms, tasty food.
We traveled with small kid almost 2 y.o. And I can say that hotel is ready for such little guests - special tableware, playing room, small pool ( but with very cold water)

We chose Austria because we simply wanted a magical white christmas for our two small boys and that is what we got. A blanket of thick snow covered the resort of Zell Am See and set just a five minute walk from the town is the hotel Stadt Wien, a warm and friendly typical ski hotel. It was excatly what we were looking for. If you want luxury and glamour, then dont stay here. If you want tradition, warmth and a cosy atmosphere then this is perfect. The location is great for a start, the hotel is situated at the bottom of a ski slope and it is within walking distance of the City express ski lift and the town centre. We didn't go to ski but cant wait to go back this year and try. The views from the top of the city express are breathtaking. The whole place is stunning, it gives you such a good feeling when you are sitting outside a mountain restaurant with a glass of gluewein and the sun on your face.
The hotel reception has a seating area by a fire and the whole place smells of cinnamon. There is a large restaurant and smaller bar area on the ground floor. Breakfast is a hot and cold buffett and the evening meal is a salad buffett followed by soup and a choice of main course followed by a choice of desserts. The food was great. If I had stayed another week I could have easily put on another half a stone. We really enjoyed the beer and wine too. Having two small children we didn't use the bar but I do understand from other guests that is was very smoky and rather small, so that would have bothered us if we had been without children since we dont smoke. The christmas dinner was a 7 course a la carte affair, not quite what we had in mind but then I wouldn't have expected roast turkery and all the trimmings. I could have stayed at home for that. We had some Austrian entertainment for two nights which we really enjoyed. A bit of thigh slapping and yodelling!
There is a pool and spa at the hotel on the first floor. The steam room is great. My only slight moan is that from the brochure it appeared there was an indoor pool that lead out in to an outdoor pool. My kids were very excited about this as they love swimming. Unfortunately this is not the case. The indoor part of the pool is simply the area housing the steps that lead down in to the outdoor pool. It is bracing to swim outside in the snow but you can only stand it for around 5 minutes as the air is so cold on your head. The kids were a little disappointed but there is a public pool nearby if you really want to use it. The saunas are in the nude area, be warned, they do not let you wear your costume.
We travelled with Crystal and the reps were very helpful. One word of advice however, do not book the Sleigh rides if you go at christmas. It is so expensive, over £100 for 4 of us to be taken out in the dark around a snowy lake with little to see. On top of that it is a horse and cart and not a sleigh.
For me, this hotel had everything we needed and expected. If I were pushed to make a negative comment, it would be only about the pool area. Everything else was just great. Cant wait to go again.

  • Liked — The food and the cosy atmosphere
  • Disliked — the lack of indoor pool

We stayed for a week in August and had a great time. The hotel has everything you need (maybe a kettle in the room would be good) and the staff were excellent.
Breakfast was a buffet with a selection of meats, cheese, breads, fruit and cereal, plus they cook omelettes on demand. You can then make a packed lunch from the buffet, which was excellent as my son can be a bit fussy so a cheese or ham roll and he was more than happy. The evening meal was also a buffet with a choice of freshly cooked main meals.
The hotel is out of the main town about 1/4 mile up hill which might be a problem for some, but there is a bus stop outside the hotel.
We booked direct with the hotel and after paying the deposit was able to pay some each month with them to spread the cost which again was excellent, or I could have payed on depature.
The hotel and the beautiful zell am see made this a great holiday, there is loads to do with the kids and we have already booked again for the same time next year to do the things we couldn't do this time.
I would highly recommend this hotel and resort
The only thing I would suggest to the hotel is to install a soft drinks machine, i dont always want me or the kids to have to order a drink when you could just grab one out of a machine.

We stayed in this hotel during 7-14 August 2008. We chose this hotel analysing obviously Tripadvisor reviews. Because it has a high ranking from other guests, it is far from railways noise but also close to the city centre, and also surrounded by green vegetation, nice trees and bushes, plus a nice grassy children playing area. We are a family with 2 little girls 7 yo and 2 yo who really enjoy pools especially when mountains bounded and there is full of flowers pots around us from hotel balconies.
In this 4 stars hotel we have an all inclusive meals, breakfast buffet, sandwiches for lunch (we did picnics up to the mountain every day) and a-la-carte dinner.
We are in loved with Austria, everything is green and clean in summer, and the people are highly civilized and also hard workers, client oriented. That’s why it is the 4th year we come in Austria but the first time in summer. Also the price was good for the services we got.
We have 2 small negative remarks but do not influence our general good opinion:
- breakfast it is the same 1 week long, which means the packed lunch is the same every day.
- a-la-carte menus have small ration (we came from all-inclusive Turkey with a big waste of food). This is just a remark, not negative. We understand that bio/farmed food is expensive here and also we respect the food.
- in our small bathroom we couldn’t get rid of „toilet smell” even we hardly ventilate.
- Wireless internet had frequently interruptions;
We rented a car and drove to a lot of entertainment children parks, a “saltz mine” in Germany, and also we do plans for the next year.

  • Liked — the flowers all around, the pool, the nature, children areas
  • Disliked — TV remote control every time blocks, to close balcons -between guests

Stayed for a week, full board at the Hotel Stadt Wien, with my family in August. Excellent hotel. Very clean, staff very friendly and the food was excellent. I travel extensively with my job, staying in a great many hotels. This is one of the better ones that I have stayed in. Great for families and I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2008

We stayed at the Stadt Wien for 6 nights in July 2008 with our 3 year old and found it to be one of the best hotels we have stayed in. There are a lot of positive reviews about this hotel already so here is a balanced summary of what we found:

Accomodation - Our Sonnberg room, whilst smaller than the picture on the website was modern and clean witha nice view of the hotel gardens. The hotel itself blends classic Austrian styling with modern very well.

Food - Surpassed our expectations and excellent most nights. Incredible breakfast choices and all evening meals complemented with vast buffet range. A number of special evenings are held were the food quality is greater. The style is generally wholesome, healthy and relatively simple but done well. With free packed lunches and cakes every afternoon what more could you want?

Staff - As mentioned before, nothing is too much trouble. We brought Euro traveller cheques which they don't accept as a rule but they accepted them to help us out. They went out of their way to make you feel part of the family.

Location - 10-15 minute walk from the town but be warned it is a very steep hill and would not necessarily suit those with walking difficulties or wheelchairs.

For kids - Play park, room with balls/slide, toy corner and a fantastic laid back relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for children.

Were there any downsides? The pool was not heated as stated and in late July it was still very cold. The sunbathing area is a fairly 'rustic' strip of grass although a nice setting.

The only other downside was 3 days of torrential rain but helpful as they were the Stadt Wien couldn't help with that...
