“Best holiday ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

My husband and I spent a week here with our 2 boys (11 and 7) in August 2012, which was booked through Crystal.
The hotel was outstanding in all areas. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was great: A huge choice at breakfast, with the option to make a packed lunch to take out. We did this everyday, however you could have a light lunch at the hotel instead if you were around over lunch time. There was complimentary coffee and delicious cake every afternoon, although we were only around a couple of times to have it, Evening meals were brilliant too, in particular the Pinzgau farmers evening and BBQ night were delicious. Every evening there was also a huge salad buffet. Our 2 boys can be a bit picky at times, and on a couple of occasions when they didn't really fancy anything from the salad or the menu our waiter Thomas brought them some chips...They loved him after that!
Our room, 203 had a pretty, balcony complete with cascading flowers, overlooking the pool and the Schmittenhoehe mountain beyond. Stunning!
The hotel has a large selection of bikes (adult and chil sizes) which you can hire from them for free-along with cycle helmets too. On the Sunday,as everthing was closed we borrowed 4 bikes and cycled around the lake. A great day out which cost us absolutely nothing!
Location wise the hotel is spot on. Ideally placed for some pleasant walks with breathtaking scenery at every turn. It is a 10 minute stroll to the centre of Zell and coming back it's all uphill, but not too steep!!!
Well worth a visit are the waterfalls at Krimml, but I would suggest you get on the train at Zell, like we did, and make your own way there rather than going on the Crystal tour. You'll save a fortune doing it this way and can spend as much time there as you like.
Salzburg is also a must- a fabulous city and a trip to the Grossglockner (highest mountain in Austria) shouldn't be missed either! Instead of doing the Crystal trip we booked our trip through the hotel with a local company, again this was cheaper than the Crystal trip but took you to the exact same place!
Watch out for the news sheet that you get everyday at breakfast. I thought that was a lovely little extra. It contained info about trips and activities (which is where we found out about the Grossglockner excursion), weather forecasts, menus and all the treatments on offer at the hotel.
We don't usually go back to the same place more than once as there is such a big world out there to explore. However, If there was ever a place which we were likely to return to then this is it! I cannot recomment this hotel highly enough.

This is the second time we have visited this traditional Austrian hotel. On the previous visit it was the parents running the hotel but now it has passed to the next generation but service is still just as good.Christina, Klaus and the team are so friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. The food is plentiful (my waistline says far too plentiful!) and a delicious mix of austrian and international cuisine. A lot of meals are buffet style, at least on 2-3 courses, our waiter Thomas was excellent as was the bar attendent Victoria who both quickly got to grips with my usual tipple. On some evenings there is entertainment in the dining room in the form of tyrolean dancing and handbell ringing. Breakfast is several courses and eggs/ omlettes are cooked to order. There is also the opportunity to make yourself a packed lunch or sign up to come into the restaurant for lunch. The hotel is a 10 minute downhill walk to the town which means its a 20 minute walk back up, although this does get you fit and loses a few pounds. There is a pool and sauna area with plenty of sun beds and treatments are available although I felt these to be a little more expensive than the UK.There is a small animal farm, although someone really should teach Carlos (the Donkey) to tell the time if he is to be an alarm call!!!.and also a childrens play area.Plenty of Bikes are available to take out free of charge. There is also table tennis and table football available with a good selection of board games kept at reception. The beds are so comfortable you really do not want to get up, and the rooms are clean most with beautiful flower balconies. We did have a few small issues with our rooms on this occasion but nothing that cant be fixed although a shame that it couldn't have been done whilst we were there. The position of this hotel is good as its a 5 minute walk to city express cable car and a 5 minute drive to the Schmittenhohe cable car, the later very helpful for disabled persons. All in all a lovely family hotel.

Room Tip: Most rooms have excellent views i think, although I would avoid those situated at the back near/abov...

My teenaged son and I have just returned from our fourth stay at the Hotel Stadt Wien, having previously stayed in 2004, 2006 and 2011. The hotel was as good as ever and by the time we were on the coach to the airport my son was already talking about returning for another visit in the future.
Having reviewed the hotel last year, there is not too much I can add to the observations I made then. The hotel is, as it has always been and excellent, friendly, family run hotel, whose staff go out of their way to make guests feel very much at home.

Having booked with Crystal and paid a supplememt for a room with a balcony, we were lucky enough to be upgraded to one of the larger rooms at the rear of the hotel. overlooking the pool (room 403). The room was very spacious, comfortable and nicely furnished. it came with a seperate bathroom and toilet. It had lovely large balcony, with a great view over the pool. the hotel gardens and the mountains at the rear of the hotel. It was equipped with two very comfortable sunbeds as well as a table and chairs.

My only minor complaint about the rooms is, as I said in my review last year, the lack of a fridge. It was very hot during our weeks stay and a fridge, if only to keep cold water in, would have been handy. It's absence was frustrating given that each room has an empty cupboard clearly designed to house a fridge. Other than this the standard of the rooms was very good.

The hotel in general achieves the perfect balance between, on one hand having the upmarket feel of a four star hotel and on the other hand having the homely feel of a family run establishment.
The staff don't seem to change from year to year and everyone who works at the hotel seems to have genuine pride in what they do, resulting in a hotel where there is real attention detail and a desire to make their guests stays as pleasurable as possible.

The food is plentiful and varied, with the menu geared towards the family market which the hotel largely caters for.
The breakfast buffet is one of the best selections I have experienced and provision is made for guests to prepare packed lunches during breakfast time free of charge.

The evening meals are a mixture of buffet and table service, with an excellent salad selection, a good choice of hot starters from the buffet, a soup course, a choice of main course and, if you still have room, a selection of desserts/cheese/icecream to finish of with. The service is attentive and friendly thoughout. The only negative observation is that the restaurant can be quite hot and stuffy and would possibly benefit from having some air conditioning to make it more comfortable.

Once again we had a very enjoyable stay at this friendly hotel. The location is perfect, peaceful and without too much passing traffic, it's handy for the mountain and cable cars as well as being a relatively short walk down into the town and no more than 10 minutes from the lakeside. I've know doubt that we'll visit Zell am See again and when we do (although I might think twice about using Crystal again) I will definitely be staying at this hotel.

Room Tip: Opt for a room with a balcony as the standard rooms without balconies can be quite small.

We've just returned from a very enjoyable 7 night stay at the Stadt Wien booked via Crystal. We were pleased with the location of the hotel, away from the busy town centre.

Our room on the 3rd floor was a small double which was clean and comfortable with enough storage space to pack away our belongings, with the added benefit of a free safe and best of all a view of the lake and mountains. The room also had a large flat screen TV – great for keeping an eye on the weather on the Schmittenhöhe webcam channel and checking the tennis and snooker scores via the Teletext on Eurosport!

The best thing about this hotel is the staff, who are all really friendly, from the management to the reception staff, the waiters (a special mention to our very efficient and helpful waiter, Uwe!) and the cleaners. We were impressed with how such a large hotel has managed to retain the personal touch.

As far as the food is concerned, we never went hungry due to the quantity of food on offer! There was a great choice of food for breakfast – as I love hot toast I was particularly impressed with the rotating industrial toaster and was amazed by the vast selection of fruit and herbal teas on offer! We took advantage of the packed lunch option every day which saved us loads of time and money. There was a vast and varied selection of food on offer for dinner including various theme nights – we particularly enjoyed the Pinzgau farmers themed evening, sampling Austrian food and entertainment.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to base themselves in the Zell am See area.

I stayed at the Stadt Wien for a week recently with my family and we had a lovely time. The room was comfortable and clean and the balcony overlooking the garden and swimming pool was very pleasant. The staff were always very friendly and polite and the food was excellent. When we checked in the hotel gave us a discount card that we could use for free use of various things for the children (we used for a boat trip around the lake and the cable car). We also made up a lunch bag each morning at breakfast (ham roll, pastry, etc.) to take with us each day that was included in the half board price. This was really helpful and kept to a minimun the need to buy food and snacks during the day when we were out and about. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the town centre but this wasn't a problem. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel that can take you up to the cable car for a trip to the top of the mountain and amazing views. The hotel is also only a 10 minute walk from the pick up point for the excursions (we went on three excursions organised by Crystal). If anyone plans any trips, I would definitely recommend visting Grossglocker - absolutely amazing if the weather is clear. Zell itself has a fair few souvenir shops and the local Billa supermarket is ideal for bottled water etc. that is needed during the day. The views around Zell are beautiful with the mountains around the lake being so picturesque. Overall, I would definitely recommend both the setting and the Stadt Wien.

Room Tip: A room with a balcony is not only really nice but gives you somewhrre to hang wet swimming costumes...

We were booked into the St Georg hotel in Zell for 5 nights through Booking . com. When we arrived they did not have a booking for us. However they did introduce us to the Stadt Wien 20yards up the road. They were very good , had a room with a balcony, lovely. The food was excellent, staff and hotel facilities likewise were excellent. Attention to detail was spot on. I would stay there again without hesitation.
